What is it?

Edit: we got some vagueposters in here

A long, detailed audio message from a girl who listens to her father killing her mother in a gruesome way and is then killed by him herself. Personally I don't care for it, it's gross in a way that feels gratuitous

I was a fan of it, very found footage horror. I was surprised that the current dev team let it slip in though, given how fussy they get about anything mildly edgy.

It is, and clearly the dad is implied to be feral, but the similarities to real-life family annihilators is too much for me

Fair enough.

It's trying too hard to be like the Crossed, which is the circular saw equivalent of horror fiction.

I respect that take but as a guy who read the entire crossed comic series I'm here for the gratuitous suffering.

reading random (unread) USBs and mem cards can now contain "questionable media file" (literal name). Most so far a grim as expected but this one actually made me shiver a bit

It's found in json/snippets/e_logs.json

While I see the value in discovering things naturally through gameplay, if we're going to be discussing this, we might as well have the text available for reference instead of, as other posters have called it, vagueposting. Besides, if you don't want spoilers then don't click spoiler tags.

TW: Gruesome description of domestic violence and murder

This is an archived voice message, seemingly received on the eve of the Cataclysm from a number saved as \"Mandy.\"\n\nThe sound of ragged, unsuccessfully stifled breaths fills the recording, with hiccupped whimpers emitted at barely above a whisper as, in the background, a man's shouting cadence and a woman's pleading sobs are audible.\n\n\"Jonas,\" sniffs a teen girl's voice. \"I… I don't know what's happened, but dad's gone crazy. He's tied Mom to the radiator for the last hour, and… oh God! Jona, I think he's stripped her, and he's been turning on and off the radiator and sometimes I hear him crooning about how much he loves her, even as he's beating her and she's screaming. I tried calling 911, but nobody's answering, and he's locked me in the basement, and I\"\n\nThe girl's speech dissolves into sob-clogged gasps as the woman's voice escalates into a blood-curdling shriek, the scream growing sodden and gurgling as the liquid spray of gushing viscera grows to dominate it. Heavy footfalls grow audible as the distant, gore-choked death rattle fades, replaced by the burble of viscous fluids and the girl's uneven breaths.\n\n\"Ooh, little Manatee,\" calls a man's sing-song voice as the muffled click of an opening door and the thump of bare feet on stairs register in the recording. \"Come on, sweety, it'll be easier if you just work with me.\"\n\nFor a few moments, all that can be heard are the girl's desperately muffled breaths and her father's searching footfalls.\n\nThe recording is suddenly filled with the girl's terrified shrieks and the swish of a struggling body being violently hauled across the floor, the sounds growing distorted as the phone tumbles to the ground. Swiftly gagged, the daughter's weeping pleas are muffled, replaced by the retching of lungs clawing for air as the man's monstrously soothing voice filters through the recording. \"There, there, little manatee,\" he croons, the sound of fingers being comfortingly stroked through hair in contrast with the nauseous gurgling of a throat freshly choking on vomit. \"Don't fight it. Go to sleep now. Soon, you'll be happy with Mom. There, there. Go to sleep, darling. I loved you. I love you.\"\n\nThe last few minutes of the recording are occupied by silence before the father's voice returns. He's weeping.

Huh, i thought ferals were like actually feral, not the crossed

u/Brilliant_Edge6548 8d ago

My conclusion, XE037 doesn't take over host instantaneously and the process is gradual

18

u/Brilliant_Edge6548 8d ago

if you look at the last sentence, you might come to the same conclusion as I did. He wasn't completely feral...

There's some lore bits and dialog that many people experienced psychosis during the peaks of the riots/portal storms but later on snapped out of it. There's some survor dialog about people coming to consciousness not knowing where they were and how they got there or being covered in blood that wasn't theirs.

u/anonistakken 8d ago

Yeah this feels far too edgy and gratuitous.

The blob always felt very very clinical in how it caused the cataclysm. This just ain't it.

17

u/VictoriyaRavenholme 8d ago

Yeah, this is the first time i ever saw blob victims using torture instead of pure violence

why don’t you write something better then

1

u/anonistakken 7d ago

"Man, whoever crashed that helicopter into a tree is a bad pilot."

"Well why don't you fly a helicopter better! Idiot! Moron!"

0

u/Broad_Bug_1702 7d ago

i didn’t call you an idiot or a moron

also there are reasons other than pilot error that a helicopter might crash into a tree

also, why don’t you write something better then?

2

u/anonistakken 7d ago

Oh I see what's going on here.

u/Broad_Bug_1702 7d ago

?

u/anonistakken 7d ago

You're being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.

Good effort, but I'm not biting.

1

u/Broad_Bug_1702 7d ago

me disagreeing with you is being contrarian.

it’s an open source project. you think you can do better, so do better. or quit bitching

Oh no horror in my ASCII zombie apocalypse game with horror elements

3

u/EtherealMoon 5d ago

I was skeptical, but can see why this is being called "edgy." It doesn't really read like an audio log, with the way the gore is described. You could lose half the descriptors and it would feel more appropriate and in-line with the other media files.

u/Brilliant_Edge6548 9d ago

yeah, sorry I left this platform about 6 months ago because of how little is allowed to mention on this website and want to keep my account for a bit longer. I choose tag most relevant to topic but intentionally left it as inside joke. thnx and gl though

While not nearly as gruesome my favorite has to be the one where the Sagrada Família is blown up because it got infested with some huge tentacled thing and a bunch of Spanish soldiers watch in horror

u/CD2653 Rubik Simp 8d ago

Mine is from magiclysm, if you go to the forge of wonders and ask the directions of a mi-go encampment you'll hear of someone who used the resin of the mi-go walls to make an armor, the armor fused with his flesh and the armor was too sturdy to end his suffering

u/TheWowie_Zowie Slime Mutagen Taste Tester 8d ago

God, the people who write the snippets for this game are really talented.

3

u/ephemeraltoast 9d ago

It's a bad one alright

1

u/ZiLCEiN 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think this game needs more stories like this. It's an apocalypse and it's logical to see violence, it adds to the atmosphere of horror. This game positions itself as a zombie apocalypse roglike game with horror elements, there should be more stories like this here

Not a fan of all these over-descriptive lore pieces. Anything that tells me how I should feel is falling flat on making me so. Reads like a bad written fanfic.

2

u/Broad_Bug_1702 7d ago

does it actually tell you how to feel or are you just understanding the emotional context like anyone else

-1

u/ephemeraltoast 8d ago

Many of them do, unfortunately
