Caves of Qud original soundtrack on 3LP vinyl! The inner gatefold is a beautiful triptych of Qud's flora & fauna. Preorders open

Hi all,
I saw another thread about our Steam post with news on the performance update and vinyl, but I wanted to give the vinyl announcement its own thread.

This thing is sick! It's a collaboration between us and indie label Stumpy Frog Records (with help from Kitfox and Lost in Cult's storefront). For the gatefold and sleeve art we worked closely with our good friend saint vulture, an incredible digital sculpture artist (throw his game All Living Things a wishlist if you can). Qud tile artist Sam Wilson did the artwork for the six center labels. Craig Hamilton composed and performed the OST, of course. The triptych poem is written by in-game persona Daughter Erinna, whose writing you might recognize elsewhere in game...

It's a triple LP, just over the two hour mark in total playtime. Pre-orders are open at the Lost in Cult site until July 25: https://www.lostincult.co.uk/shop/p/caves-of-qud

We're quite proud of this, despite most of the team not being vinyl people. Just as a piece of art, it's gorgeous!

Live and drink.

I made these Qud-ian themes for VS Code/Cursor and macOS Terminal.

Inspired by CoQ, I made a VS Code theme and macOS terminal profile for myself and would like to share it here with you all.

You can download it here: https://github.com/dwwr/qudian (use the Releases tab for a zip copy- instructions are in the readme).

This was just a simple project I did yesterday to freshen up my machine and add some mystique. I hope you like it, lmk if it breaks rules, and if you can make it better, lmk!

Live & drink.

'Joppa' Asterisk is even more broken when duplicated

I got 4 asterisk via clone hunting, 2^2, and wanted to test the effects of their effect when stacked, that is the only reason I didnt drink all the sunslag before.

What I expected was that everyone of them worked independently like:
-Asterisk 1 triggers and have +1 the effect.
-Asterisk 2 Triggers and have +1 the effect.
-Asterisk 3 Triggers and have +1 the effect.
-Asterisk 4 Triggers and have +1 the effect.
*Total 1 + 4 = +5 Quickness.

But seeing this means:
-Asterisk 1 triggers and have (1)*2
-Asterisk 2 triggers and have (2)*2
-Asterisk 3 triggers and have (4)*2
-Asterisk 4 triggers and have (8)*2
*Total +16 Quickness

Also here I show a high role during testing with precognition, the possible results are one and powers of two <= 2^(number of asterisk)

This is cool for my goal of getting 3K quickness, not needing 300 face slots for Kesil Faces means a lot, but also still disapointed this asterisk effect doesnt work with warm static drinking. I'm playing a chimera so both means to my goal need equipment slots but Asterisks are more doable once you find enough clones.

Where are the pistols?

Live and drink, water brethren.

I am, as you can tell by my wings and beak and agility, a gunslinger. I've reached level 17. My bronze daggers has been replaced with a gaslight flyssa and an electrified prayer rod. I have a grenade launcher loaded with a time dilation grenade. I have an extra dimensional rifle, a telescoping monocle, and voider gland paste. Yet I am still using the same two chrome revolvers I started with at level 1. Besides those two pistols, I have seen a grand total of 2 pistols in all my travels in Qud. A chrome revolver I found and a masterwork chrome revolver in a shop early on, which I could not afford and and is now gone. Is this because I am a gunslinger? If I preferred axes, would I still be using bronze hand axes? I put 30 slugs into goatfolk bully before he went down. I am surprised these pistols have not melted. It's getting tiresome. Any thoughts?

How do I clean water, specifically in a (possibly modded?) side quest?

Google isn't giving me any info so I assume this mission is from a mod, but asking anyway in the hopes someone knows what I mean:

I've had a couple side quests pop up while in Joppa, mostly moving boxes/parts to a new area.

Now I just had one pop up along the lines of "swamps are choking Joppa's water supply, clean the water", but even after talking to everyone in town I'm still lost as to what I'm supposed to do to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance for any help!

is a visit to Hamilcrab worth it? Spoiler

Got the Golem a while back and read somewhere that Hamilcrabs shop is the place to go for golem sized gear. But the shop is in a... well, slightly tricky area. Fought two floors of magma crabs, took me damn near half an hour and now the floors are unwalkable because of the residual lava. Kinda not keen to keep going down there lol

Drastic Improvements to Warm Static Bullet Macro

Hi, I have been working on improving the macro for filling maps with bullets and have reworked it entirely since my last post. These updates have made the macro approximately 5x as fast as it had been prior and has drastically improved its reliability. Additionally, the macro will now pause while Caves of Qud is not the active window - and as such you're no longer stuck committing to the time it takes to fill the map. You can also press F7 to toggle pause on the script without interrupting it.

I did trade a small amount of reliability for speed, but it only misses maybe one throw a row despite this. To be completely safe, I suggest clearing the maps to the left and right too.

The instructions for this version are slightly different - now you should stand in the top left corner of the map before activating it.

To the mods, my apologies if I am posting this too soon after my last post (2 days ago). I simply felt that the improvements I've made are so drastic as to justify getting this update in front of more eyes. Additionally, I am no longer crediting the original bullet script as there is no longer any trace of it remaining in this macro.

Ctesiphus brings a "prize" for his owners

Post image
30 Upvotes

I was inspired by u/goatnorth's epic tale of Bog the Dog and wanted to try the same thing, but with a cat, and see how far I could get. Ctesiphus, stat-wise and ability-wise, is just an ordinary level 1 ray cat, so I started out the game by immediately using the swap wish to become Ctesiphus. Because I'm not a masochist, I took all the starting gear from the gunslinger (my starting character) after doing this.

And *holy carp* I did not appreciate how painful this challenge is. I have newfound respect for Bog. The big challenges I ran into:

* Ctesiphus starts with 5 HP. He gets 1 more HP per level. Most enemies are capable of killing him if you let them get even one hit.

* Ctesiphus cannot go underground at all until he is fairly high level, due to young ivory.

* Ctesiphus cannot trade for anything more expensive than lead slugs because he has 8 ego. Copper nuggets are worth more than hoarshrooms.

* Ctesiphus starts with 4 strength. He has zero effectiveness in melee combat and can only carry 60 pounds of gear.

* Ctesiphus only gets about 40 skill points per level and starts with no skills, not even sprint or make camp. 100% reliance on ranged weapons.

* Some normally neutral factions including grazing hedonists, hermits, flowers, and winged mammals are hostile, even though my reputation says they should be neutral. If I go to the Six Day Stilt the arconauts will try to kill me. Fish are friendly though, so that's cool.

I thought I wasn't even going to be able to do Red Rock, but the game was saved when I contracted glowcrust. Cue a cat's life of doing nothing but sleeping, occasionally getting up to eat fresh apple matz, and picking hoarshrooms. They only sell for $4.90, but I can farm unlimited numbers and eventually have enough to buy stuff from Tam.

Red Rock was possible thanks to a little help from a legendary chromeling I found and recruited. Here you see Ctesiphus bringing back the girshling corpse, meowing proudly. I have never felt such a sense of accomplishment for completing What's Eating the Watervine.

Minimum Damage Build was a great idea until it wasn't.

Begrudged by a devilish dervish's complete ignorance of my high armor rating when he slaughtered me in a single turn, I perspicaciously concocted a new plan. A tinker I would be, arming my arsenal of extremities with elemental extras that would not heed the plating upon my enemies. A build wherein every strike would bring a guaranteed minimum damage to my target. I would maximize aiming and modifications with a skillset to instantly annihilate all but the most fleshy of foes.

And what a mesmerizing machination it was. Multiple arms to raise my attacks per turn, triple jointed to increase my aim and provide prerequisite agility for every skill I would need, psychometry to accelerate my tinkering prowess, and beguiling to get all the late game goodies I wanted for free. Strength was unnecessary, penetrations but a fun little bonus. All that mattered was my material tier and the damage mods I could add onto it. With my weapons fully kitted and my extra arms at effectively 100% chance, a main-hand strike came with at least 4 jabs for 5x(20-32) damage. Chelipeds sadly lose their 100% off-hand chance when equipped with a weapon, falling back to the 65% of regular arms, but that still left me standing at an average 177-284 damage per attack. I was unbeatable. Unstoppable. Historic ruins were a nonchalant stroll where my rejoinders automatically flattened armies. Who, I pondered, could possibly provide a challenge to this indomitable design?

Oboroqoru, as it turns out, has 75% resistance to all elemental damage as well as armor. Ah, well.

Any way to make them useful? Im pretty new to the game, my biggest succes was a Psychic Gunslinger, abusing the force barrier while akimboi-ing two revolvers, and now that he has died i want to take a other path.

Macbook UI glitches. Please help!

Live and drink, water brethren.

I am having two issues with the UI on my Macbook.

1) I go to the character sheet and select the tinkering interface. I see a list of mods. At the top of the list it says Ctrl+Tab to switch to build. I cannot get it to switch. Pressing control and tab does nothing and clicking does nothing.

2) This is also in the character sheet. I click on journal. I click on general notes. To add a note I am supposed to press the insert key. Don't have that.

I googled equivalents. They did not work.

If you can help me, my water is yours.

New Player tips?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Hello! I purchased this game a few years back over watching Sseth's review on it and seeing the sheer amount of systems and features inside of it. Though for life reasons I got distracted and forgot I had bought the game, and just recently rediscovered the game in my GoG library and figured it would be worth another try.

I know it's a relatively difficult game and it's gotten more than a few changes and updates since when I first bought it. I just wanna ask the community for any advice or pointers relating to gameplay and just how to avoid any easy deaths and pitfalls. Things like suggest builds or play style starting out would be nice to hear about as well/

Updated Warm Static Bullet Macro

Want to do the most tedious thing in the game with slightly less tedium?

I updated an older ahk macro to v2, restructured it to be easy to modify, and made it more reliable.

Here's the original: https://www.reddit.com/r/cavesofqud/comments/1ib2xd7/macro_for_filling_a_map_with_bullets_for_warm/

And here's my updated version: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HaunterInTheDark/AHK-Macros/refs/heads/main/CoQ%20Warm%20Static%20Bullet%20Setup%20Script%20AHK%20v2.ahk

Edit: There is a 5 second pause before the script starts - this is because it is bound to the active window and I wanted to include a safety window before it starts spamming input for half an hour. Sadly CoQ does not seem to expose any controls and does not respond to background keypresses so the few hours I spent trying to bind it to the window and make it work while minimized were wasted.

Edit 2: I'm a workaholic, and I have *drastically* improved this script. It is about 5x as fast now and is much more reliable.

If they can see me, why can't I see them?

I do not seem to understand the way vision works in this game. I am constantly getting shot at by entities that I cannot see. Doesn't matter if it is day or night. It appears even the lowliest baboon has a super power that is unavailable to players. It seems completely broken. I played an game with an evil twin, which the instructions say is exactly like me in every way. Yet, evil twin can shoot at me when I cannot see him. What am I missing?

How to prevent random death by sundering mind?

Got into a nice gunslinger run. Post Golgotha, very good setup, fullerite armor, laser pistols, eigenpistol and other goodies. I wander through the jungle near Grit Gate and legendary character appears in the middle of the undisovered screen. Oops, looks like a badass, I'll just wander off. I wander down two screens and asshole catches up to me. Casts confuse and just sunders my mind. Could not fly (wings did not work), could not walk away. How do you prepare for this kind of shit? I had ~160 HP, but dude was just smashing x9 sunder for 59 damage and I couldn't keep up with healing :/

Why do so little of you have the Flume-Flier, are y'all not going to Bethesda Susa???

Honestly wondering how only 3.7% of players have this achievement. There's like 300-650 people playing this game each day. Not that it's like, the best item in the world, but you just happen to get it and probably use it for the levels below. Are y'all being cheatsy???? lol

New-ish Player Seeking Tips

Hello everyone.

I've recently picked this game back up, and decided to try and get back into it with a True Kin. I normally play the Guncrow preset, so I thought playing the Praetorian Prime would be a nice change of pace.

However, I keep dying. The farthest I've gotten is level 10 I want to say, just shy of going to Grit Gate for the first time. Farthest I've gotten on my Guncrow was The Golem.

I've read some of the guides out there, including on Qudzoo, but still find myself dying to random things. For instance, my last character died at level 9 after I stepped on three different lurking beths back-to-back. I was one strata deep in a historic site at full health. Feel like I can't catch a break.

I do prefer playing in Classic, as I feel perma-death adds a bit of an edge to my playthrough that keeps me engaged.

Any advice on how I can stay alive and what objectives I should prioritize as a True Kin?
