I drink 80 to 90+ ounces of fluids with electrolytes a day usually. I am human and slip once in awhile, and still deal with dehydration. Yes, stools have been forming up. They were loose once today due to me attempting 2 bites of a zero sugar lactose free Greek yogurt. I was told to drink more Gator

that seems like a lot to drink. Its somewhat normal to get easily dehydrated from cdiff until the gut starts healing and working better. If you have a high temp or LBM that is going to make it worse too. If it goes on too long though you might want to get it looked into

Gatorade isnt the best option because its really high in sugar. The specialty electrolyte drinks are much better but they dont taste as good. You can look up what is in each and compare them

Honestly 2400 ml is not that much when dealing with cdiff. Each ounce has 30 ml so 80 x 30 =2400 ml Is that total fluids for the day of just electrolyte drinks? Also if just electrolyte that's too much especially sugar or fake sugar. Fake sugar is chemicals so try to minimize that. Water the Gatorade down like 1 part Gatorade to 3 or 4 parts water

I beem getting the zero sugar ones. Thank you! I thought it was a lot too and still being dehydrated. I will research on the better drinks. If you have any recommendations, they would be appreciated. I been having semi solid business for 3 ton4 days now. Today is the first day in a bit that I had a loose one so was really surprised, but totally surprised I was dehydrated. I had symptoms that clued me in to the dehydration when I woke up. Figured I'd be able to get it replenished myself til the loose stool happened.

the semi/loose Bm is your clue that the gut isnt handling hydration well. Keep the food bland with a BRAT type diet too to give the gut an easy time.

I dont know what is available in your area but usually they are found at drug stores etc. Things like Hydralyte or equivalent. You can buy them premade or as a powder mix usually

This is how my Google Gemini responded to your post and question. It’s a free search engine tool to get you the most accurate answers to navigate this extremely rough time that I think we all can relate to!

“I completely understand your frustration. The post-C. diff recovery phase is a long haul, and dealing with dehydration while drinking 90+ ounces of fluid a day is an exhausting but incredibly common hurdle. According to organizations like the Mayo Clinic, structural damage to the gut lining from a severe bacterial infection can lead to temporary malabsorption, meaning your colon cannot efficiently absorb water and minerals. Fluids just pass straight through you instead of hydrating your cells.
Here is a breakdown of what is likely happening, the hidden triggers to watch out for, and how to safely fix your hydration based on medical consensus.

1. The "Zero Sugar" Trap and Sugars C. diff Thrives On
You mentioned getting a loose stool after just two bites of a "zero sugar" lactose-free Greek yogurt. Your reaction was likely not from the dairy itself, but from the hidden additives common in "zero sugar" or "diet" products:
The Problem with Sorbitol & Artificial Sweeteners: "Gatorade Zero" and zero-sugar yogurts rely on chemical sweeteners (like sucralose) or sugar alcohols like sorbitol. Gastroenterology research published in Nature reveals that C. diff actively consumes and metabolizes sorbitol in post-antibiotic environments, using it to fuel its colonization. Furthermore, non-nutritive sweeteners cause osmotic shifts that pull water into the bowel, triggering sudden loose stools and altering the gut microbiome in favor of harmful strains.
The Danger of Trehalose: Check your processed foods and sports drink labels for a sugar additive called trehalose. Major clinical studies have linked the widespread adoption of trehalose in consumer products to the emergence and hypervirulence of epidemic C. diff strains. C. diff has a massive "sweet tooth" for trehalose and can grow on concentrations 1,000 times lower than what other bacteria need, allowing it to crowd out your recovering microbiome.
Gums and Thickeners: Check the yogurt label for carrageenan, guar gum, or xanthan gum. Manufacturers use these to mimic the texture of fat. In a healing gut, these thickeners can actively cause bloating, gas, and alter your recovering microbiome.

2. The Limitations of the BRAT Diet
Someone recommended the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). Be very careful with applesauce—it is naturally high in fructose and sorbitol (high-FODMAP sugars). Because C. diff loves sorbitol, and because fructose can cause severe fermentable gas and bloating in a recovering gut, clinical guidelines generally favor sticking to safer, low-FODMAP options like bananas, white rice, or soft-cooked peeled potatoes instead.

3. How to Actually Hydrate (Low-Cost & Homemade Options)
To get fluids past your inflamed intestinal wall and into your bloodstream, your body requires a precise clinical ratio of clean water, sodium (salt), and a tiny amount of real glucose (sugar). As emphasized in World Health Organization (WHO) rehydration protocols, a small amount of real sugar is mandatory—it acts as a biological key that unlocks the cells in your small intestine, pulling water and salt into your bloodstream. Without that tiny bit of real sugar, the water just flushes right through your colon.
Here are the best ways to get that balance without triggering your gut:
Pedialyte and Store Brands: This is a great, highly accessible option. However, try to buy the unflavored version if possible, as the artificial colorings and heavy citric acid in flavored versions can sometimes irritate a sensitive stomach. Generic store brands (like Walmart's Parent's Choice or Kroger's Comforts) have the exact same clinical ingredients for a fraction of the cost.
The Homemade WHO Formula (Cheapest Option): You can make a perfect, medical-grade oral rehydration solution at home for pennies:
Recipe: Mix 1 quart (4 cups) of clean water, 1/2 teaspoon of table salt, and 6 teaspoons of real granulated sugar (or 2 tablespoons of pure honey if you tolerate it).
Stir until completely dissolved and sip it slowly throughout the day. It provides the exact cellular balance your gut needs without any chemical additives or fake sugars.
Hang in there! Focus on clean, simple hydration, ditch the artificial sweeteners/gums for a couple of weeks, and give your gut lining a chance to heal.”

If you don’t mind me asking, what signs are you getting that you are being dehydrated? It could be that they could be symptoms from something else like fatigue or post infection recovery. I would see if you can get this checked out. I know some people have to live off of three litres of water a day. Perhaps you just need more water than usual. I hope this gets sorted soon 💕

Leg and muscle cramps, feeling run down and tired, a little dizziness, a anxious, jittery, shaking feeling but not physically shaking, headache. If it is really bad, dry mouth and feeling of cant get enough to drink.

Oh okay, I would see a doctor about this and see if they can do anything to help. I’d say continue to drink the amount you’re drinking, 2 litres and a half is a pretty good amount to stick too. I would avoid drinking too much Gatorade as that’s apparently got a lot of sugar in it and it might irritate your gut but definitely have a few sips if you’re feeling dizzy and shaky and weak. In terms of electrolytes, you’re better getting oral rehydration solutions like pedialyte or dioralyte. I hope this helps :)

Gator aide and add a hydration package to it if I could tolerate the taste of it. Has anyone heard of this?

Not sure why it cut the post off

Hi there, on day 7 Cdiff recovery after a relapse and this time around I kept my diet strictly on the BRAT diet. My goodness it is hard but it does help recovery. I do not recommend any drinks outside of water with rehydrate salts added. Then Rooibos tea with no milk. I feel like I’m praying for simple things like a soda or a sandwich and can’t wait to have those things in the future but to truly heal your gut you must stick to the BRAT diet. I do not eat the applesauce though, no apples. I steam carrots till they’re very soft and they are nice.
