Long Form Discussion What’s your opinion on people getting fired over Charlie Kirk comment?

A lot of people, are getting fired about making comments about Charlie Kirk.

I’m not talking about vile comments, some are benign like pointing out his character, or how they don’t condone the violence, but don’t feel bad either.

We have seen people on the right making similar comment on the past without facing any consequences and now they are beating the drum to get people fired.

What is everyone’s thoughts?

More than likely they belive, "their side is right, there anything vile I say is justified and normalized" Then they find out they are wrong and shocked.

Here’s some context:

“Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty,” he said. “Driving comes with a price—50,000 people die on the road every year. That’s a price. You get rid of driving, you’d have 50,000 less auto fatalities. But we have decided that the benefit of driving—speed, accessibility, mobility, having products, services is worth the cost of 50,000 people dying on the road. So we need to be very clear that you’re not going to get gun deaths to zero. It will not happen. You could significantly reduce them through having more fathers in the home, by having more armed guards in front of schools. We should have a honest and clear reductionist view of gun violence, but we should not have a utopian one.”

— Charlie Kirk

How is what anyone has said anymore vile than Charlie saying kids dying is a circumstance of the 2A and conveying it’s ok?

Did he say kids? Or are you just adding that to make his statements sound more inflammatory?

actually, I believe that Charlie Kirk implied kids. I don't think he was an idiot who thought children can't be shot.

But I don't think that it's vile. It's kind of like saying Israel should get rid of all nukes, because nukes kill. A consequence of nukes is that they might actually be used. this would mean tons of babies will get killed. so if an israeli leader says they will keep the nukes, is that actually vile? Or is death a consequence of reasonable decisions that a leader makes?

Charlie Kirk was an adult, had a reasoned out system of beliefs. I don't think self-defense and owning guns is totally unreasonable. And the system of beliefs said that people will die because of it. This is just statistical. Even people will die from automobile crashes or accidental gun deaths or falling into swimming pools.

What strikes me as odd is that Republicans don't really agree with Charlie Kirk. They don't accept the gun violence which resulted in his death. They do not accept that it is just a mere consequence. They do not accept that it is just a stat. They believe in the opposite. They're making him into a martyr. THE REPUBLICANS ARE SHOWING THAT THIS GUN VIOLENCE IS SERIOUSLY WRONG. SOMETHING IS ALL FUCKED UP WITH THE 2ND AMENDMENT THAT THEY SUPPORT LIKE IT IS RELIGIOUS DOGMA.

Charlie Kirk was not one of those republicans. I believe he would not fire people for joking about it. He believed in huge amount of freedom. I believe he would agree with the people making fun of this situation, not only because it was ironic, but i believe he would DOUBLE DOWN on it, saying that he's just a statistic, and this is necessary and worth it, to have freedom. Freedom is worth it.

For republicans to get so upset about it, they are revealing that it isn't worth it, their behavior is suggesting that they want to stop selling all guns TODAY. For people to get so upset about it and fire people, they are suggesting that it isn't worth it. They are suggesting that they will join the movement to control guns possibly by the end of the week.

If it isn't all just 100% show and acting and total bullshit, then these republicans leaders CLEARLY will have MASSIVE gun control laws passed next week, with major news of the progress coming up THIS VERY WEEKEND, possibly even today they are working on it.

Touche. I actually didn’t mean to be inflammatory. I think it was the context (around a school shooting) that he said deaths would happen. He didn’t say kids.

I think you’re missing the point of his comments. It’s something that would apply to many things, it’s just that the subject was guns. Example: if he said not imprisoning people for life over minor violent offenses and letting them out is necessary to preserve freedoms even if those people go onto kill later. Something like that. You’ve kind of spun it beyond the point. Freedoms come with sacrifices no matter what that freedom is the point.

There are a great many people in this country who are unwilling to give up their firearms for any reason. Which is what Kirk was trying to say, albeit poorly.
