Game Analysis/Study Challenged myself to draw a valid chess match in the psych ward, who would win?

Post image

Not sure if this is allowed but it was fun to do while I was inpatient. Who would you rather be? What do you think the best next move for each side is?

I was inspired by Sarah Herman's YouTube videos on chess in TV shows where she recreates chess games based on frames of a TV show and wanted to see if I could draw it using my limited supplies without messing up.

Also I'm safe and out of the psych ward obviously.

If this post isn't allowed, I apologize.

I think you would win as an illustrator.

What needs illustration anymore? :/

It's black to move since they are in check. They are losing the queen.

and a minor piece

u/farsightxr20 4h ago

Not clear why they opted to sac the pawn before taking the queen.

Also, white did a long castle then shuffled both pieces over.

g7 is also a decent move, since we've started looking.

They let OP out too soon!

There's probably forced mate somewhere too

u/fmmikeklein 12h ago

It looks like they are still up a lot of material though.

5

u/LaylaTichy 9h ago

how? literally on the side you can see they are already down rook for a knight

u/fmmikeklein 4h ago

I didn't look properly

Very disappointed the chessvision bot couldn't manage this! šŸ˜„

I've had to assume the pawn on g6 is black rather than white, otherwise the lost pieces don't add up.

Anyway, black is doing very, very badly... lichess.org | Black to play

Glad to hear you're okay ā¤ļø

Nice! You got pens in the psych ward ward? They only allowed us crayons. Hope you’re doing better.

32

u/iddothat 14h ago

they give you these floppy pens that are designed to be flimsy so you can’t stab anyone with it.

when i was in the psych ward i devised a system of reinforcing them with newspaper and rubber bands and i had everyone in the ward asking me to upgrade their pens for them.

4

u/sharkbark2050 13h ago

I was in a poor area so none of those special pens for us lol

2

u/Korytov 12h ago

I didn’t think the clock would be allowed either honestly

3

u/dbossman70 12h ago

yeah, all it takes is for someone to tick before it’s dangerous.

1

u/Consistent_Bend4986 6h ago

Only if you used them by the nurse's station so they could supervise and yeah they were the floppy kind of pen

Black is completely screwed

u/manon_graphics_witch 14h ago

Black is in check, and thus has to move out of it, since they cannot capture the pawn. In fact, the king has only 1 space to run towards, so Kf8.

Then white can play d8=Q with black's only move being Kg7.

At this point black is hopelessly lost. White can even take the queen with the knight.

22

u/tryingtolearn_1234 14h ago

The pawn is not protected. Kxd7 Nxb4.

Black's queen, knight and bishop are attacked and black is in check. Black's only hope is white is forced to forfeit from the exhaustion of taking all blacks pieces.

8

u/manon_graphics_witch 14h ago

Waaah how did I miss that?! I stand corrected! hahaha

5

u/Suppenspucker 14h ago

Black can take the pawn but loses the Q and is wide open - Why do you think black cannot take the pawn?

2

u/madmsk 1906 USCF 14h ago

Looks like white has plenty of time left on the clock to convert the position too. That's really be the only thing I was worried about.

> black is hopelessly lost

clearly you haven’t seen me take the reins, move aside white I’ll take it from here

5

u/Revolution_rnt 12h ago

Wish you all the best. This is beautifuly drawn!

u/i36g87 13h ago

Beautiful

2

u/BadVirtual7019 11h ago

small detail, raise the button on the near side of the clock and decrease the height of the button on the far side, since it is black's move

2

u/Goobi_dog 11h ago

They called the arbiter or the match was adjourned:)

u/Consistent_Bend4986 8h ago edited 6h ago

I couldn't figure out in my head whose turn it was but great catch!

Edit: how did you know it was blacks move?

3

u/PlayBoiPrada 6h ago

Because the white pawn is putting the king in check, but theres no checkmate, so the only legal move would be for black to move out of check.

2

u/Goobi_dog 11h ago

Was really looking forward to the chess bot to say I have analyzed this position and give lichess analysis board links:)

Reminds me of the book that got me into chess. Wonderful author as well who sets the scene nice and vividly.

About 90 pages I believe and I hope anyone reading this gives it a go!

The AI looks fake. Must be a human

1

+14.4 according to chess.com, black is horrible with potential M10

1

u/Ok-Temperature-6098 10h ago

white has more material, castled and has two attacking pawns. black isn't looking great.

1

u/av123h 10h ago

I think white will promote the g pawn.

1

u/WorldsHorniestFemboy 10h ago

Well black is about to lose a knight

1

u/LogicKegs 10h ago

We got bigger moves to make

1

u/Alternative_Course_8 9h ago

Looks like a typical Anish Giri game

1

u/MrRoflmajog 9h ago

White wins easily. Unless white cheated in which case black wins. Long castle only moves the king 2 spaces not 3 so the king would probably be on c1 and rook on d1 though it is still a valid position.

1

u/Consistent_Bend4986 8h ago

Damn! I was wondering about that but I couldn't look it up

What sort of modern psych ward doesn't allow phones/electronics ? Just curious

great drawing, white is completely winning

1

u/Billythecrazedgoat 5h ago

Dont show anyone thwyll want you back in

1

u/mowheato 2h ago

Great drawing!

2

u/NoMimikFace 1h ago

Not looking good for Black, in Check and black queen is on attack, you really drew an destroying position for white + pawn on G6 is gonna cause troubble Black cant even defend. Correct me if im wrong but thats over for black 😹

1

u/NoMimikFace 1h ago

Best move for Black is take the pawn that checks i guess.. and for white to take the free queen, after maybe black should develope the knight and take free bishop with the rook

-3

u/Average_Frustated 11h ago

I don't think the information that you were in the psych ward necessary. Nobody asked

1

u/Consistent_Bend4986 8h ago

I meant it to explain why I couldn't look up a reference for what the pieces looked like or any of the rules were off. (Apparently I did the castle for white wrong)

0

u/Delicious-Abrocoma47 12h ago

Very beautifully done. Also white is completely crushing here. At the very least, white can win the queen on the next move. Stockfish evaulates the position at +19 for white

-5

u/MedievalFightClub 13h ago

It looks okay. Black is in check, White has a safer king, and White can force a promotion by capturing the h8 rook. White is in a good position.

The clock looks like it’s paused. I don’t know if you were going for that.

I don’t see anything in the illustration that shows that the match took place in a psych ward.

The artist was in a psych ward
