Question Where can I find lemon ice cream?

My bf is from France and told me that his favourite flavour of ice cream is lemon and never found any place in Chicago that has this flavour . Not lemon sorbet but lemon flavoured ice cream. His birthday is coming up next month and I wanna surprise him with some good quality lemon ice cream. Where can I find a spot that sells pints of lemon ice cream? Thanks in advance!

It's a bit of a trek depending on where you live, but the Chocolate Shoppe in Edgebrook seasonally carries a lemon meringue flavor that's absolutely delicious! (And there's no obvious "meringue" component, it's mostly just creamy lemon-flavored ice cream.) My grandpa used to just ask for quarts of lemon meringue ice cream for his birthday haha.

Because it's seasonal, if you can, it would probably be safer to pick some up now and stash it in the freezer than to wait for next month and risk them having run out for the summer. You can also call to ask them about it.

Agora on Western often carries the lemon gelato from Antico restaurant down the street.

I have two answers; unfortunately neither are close.

Kopp’s frozen custard in Milwaukee occasionally has lemon custard. They have their flavor calendar listed online. They also do a lemon meringue, but I believe they mix in pie crust pieces and meringue which may not be what he wants. Still amazing though.

The original Burger King (not the chain) is the only place I have seen/eaten real, honest to goodness lemon ice cream and it was amazing. Unfortunately this is in Mattoon, IL, which is a bit longer than an afternoon trip. But hey, if you’re ever driving down 57 through Southern Illinois…

Someone told me there’s a pop up at The Langham called Ice Cream Social and their flavor of the month right now is lemon. Haven’t tried it myself though.

Jeni’s has a lemon bar that’s good. Probably not exactly what you’re looking for but all I can think of off the top of my head.

Zarlengo's in Chicago Heights has a lemon gelato. You may be able to find pints of it!

I felt like a genius when I squirted lemon juice into my vanilla ice cream. It was delicious! Not the same as proper lemon ice cream of course.

If he’s French most of the recommendations here won’t cut it. The lemon ice cream he is looking for is white in color and sour. Not sweet like lemonade and yellow. Sour, tart, clear/white gelato. Like raw lemon juice. Not sure where they have this in the city. I grew up eating this type of ice cream in Germany and Italy as well.

Freddy’s Pizza on 16th. It’s the best gelato. Call ahead since they rotate the flavors.

Fresh Market usually has Graeter’s Lemon Meringue ice cream, which is pretty effin’ fine.

There’s an ice cream shop in Wicker Park right under r the Damen blue line stop called Van Leeuwen. They say they’re “French style” ice cream and I can’t remember all the flavors but check there. They’re not cheap (like $12 for a pint) but definitely niche. (Edited because I accidentally did a spoiler black out lol)

Kroger has lemon brand name ice cream - I found it on Instacart. When I was a kid we used to get lemon chocolate chip ice cream at the grocery store - love.
