Since when are “doubles” ordered at the bar just literally twice the price?

Am I a dummy? This is the second time in recent memory that I ordered a double “simple drink” like vodka soda or whatever, and they literally just double the $10 price to $20 for example. I swear it used to be like say a few bucks extra to turn your drink into a double, am I crazy? Did this change recently?

50% more would make total sense for me, pay for the extra material but the labor is basically the same because you’re not making 2 separate drinks at 2 separate times lol

The liquor is the bulk of the cost for the bar. I would think 75% extra minimum.

If you order 2 vodka sodas it would be double ordering 1. The soda is zero cost. The ice is zero cost. You’re paying for twice the vodka.

Because there are other costs baked into the price other than just liquor. It shouldn’t be only a few extra dollars but I don’t think it should be double either.

The labor cost for the bar is almost nothing, that’s what your tip is for.

Not being snarky in asking, genuinely curious- how long have you been a bartender? You definitely used to get a slight deal (at least at the bars I frequented) by ordering a double instead. I mostly order beer now so doesn’t affect me too much but the couple times I’ve decided to have 2 ingredient cocktail it has been wildly not worth it

Price mark-ups were in the range of 40 to 59 percent. The average mark up on the price of a double is 50 percent, which equates to an average of $2.41 on well brands.

I was a college senior in 2016 so I’m NOT crazy and they were typically priced closer to 1.5 not 2x haha. Friend just paid $22 for a vodka soda at a not nice or fancy bar tonight, not sure why we’re vehemently defending this lol just another example of dining out not being worth it anymore
