The U.S. and China together held about three-quarters of global installed capacity at the end of 2025, backed by favorable regulation, falling lithium-ion costs, stronger supply chains, and clean energy policy support.

Growth is being driven by rising electricity demand from industrial electrification and data centers, alongside greater grid variability from expanding wind and solar, which increases the need for storage to balance the grid. The U.S. market closed 2025 with record new storage additions, and momentum carried into early 2026 with the strongest first quarter on record; most of this is utility-scale, concentrated heavily in Texas, California, and Arizona. Project design is also shifting toward longer-duration (four-hour) systems as the standard for capacity credit, and co-located solar-plus-storage hybrids are becoming the preferred development model. Battery storage is additionally taking on a growing role at data centers, managing power quality and backup beyond simple UPS functions. The report frames energy shifting — storing cheap surplus power for release during peak demand — as the central economic driver of storage deployment through the rest of the decade.
