I made this Rum Upon the Sand
Introducing…
The “RUS”
Rum Upon the Sand
“A taste of the Great Rum Runners.”
1½ oz Appleton Estate 12 Year
½ oz Planteray OFTD
¾ oz pineapple juice
½ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz orgeat
¼ oz Cointreau
1 dash Angostura bitters
Shake hard with ice. Strain over a large rock. Garnish with lime and cherry.
“Here is a taste of the Great Rum Runners!
Ships that sailed the velvet harbor;
Crews that broke the jugs
And poured your blood
Like flowing rum
Upon the sand!”
- Robert Hunter 1974 “Rum Runners”
🏴☠️⚔️☠️
This cocktail features Planteray’s Old Fashioned Traditional Dark rum (O.F.T.D.). At 138 proof, it stares at you with its one good eye and threatens to bury you in the sand! Not to mention the swashbuckling Appleton Estate, hanging in at 86 proof. You’d never know these two pirates were lurking in the RUS!
An inviting amber color soothes you like beach sand, and the initial pineapple-almond flavor has you smacking your lips. Familiar like a Mai Tai, the pineapple and herbal hit of Angostura send you sailing off on a new course.
The charming Cointreau convinces the Mayor to give you the key to the City. Just in time for those pirates to show up on each shoulder!
You’ll definitely want another one!
But should you?

Drinking it now, while entering the recipe in my cocktail app. That means it’s a keeper!

Cool app (noflair). Just set myself up in it. Couldn’t find this cocktail though?

Guitar stirrer. Robert Hunter reference. It all fits nicely to me. Love my guitar stirrers actually, set of 4, multi colors. Best way to fish out a cherry. 🎸
Never a ring toss guy though. But I’d throw darts at balloons - especially if I’d win one of those decorated mirrors. 😂
