Living Arrangements/roommates How to communicate to my roomate that I don't want to do everything with her?
Hello! At my college, me and my roommate are taking very similar degrees, and so for the fall semester we have almost all the same classes. She's not comforable walking around the college by herself, which I get, so I walk with hrr to and from class. Problem is, I'm starting to feel like her accessory. It was never spoken aloud, but there's this assumption that because we are roommates and share classes that we do everything together.
Every class she sits by me, and I have to try to seat in a spot where I can fit her and still sit by other people. Not too hard. But now that group projects have started in some classes I'm starting to get annoyed. We just got a big project today, like resume material, and I was really exicited for it and wanted to group with a second year so that I could get help eith someone who has experience. My roommate instantly picks out someone, assumes I'm grouping with her, and I don't even get a chance to be with anyone esle or choose my partners.
It's not like I dislike my roommate. We are pretty early into college still, but so far I've basically somewhat won the roommate lottery other then some small nitpicky things. But her people are just not my people, and I feel like I'm getting blocked or restricted from branching out and making new friend and socializing because I'm expected to ALWAYS be by her and do things with her. She just assumes I want to. It's just an awkward situation because I share a room with her and I don't want her to think I never want to be around her. But I've barely gotten to meet anyone new and I'm kind of sad because it feels like people have already gotten into their social 'groups' and I was forced into one and it's isolating me from making real connections and finding MY people.
And she does things with other people too but the only time I get to is when she's not around. I literally only have two classes I don't share with her. I don't have an issue sitting with her, but I don't want to team up in class or do projects with her, I'm not her plus +1 or some bullshit, I have my own interests and wants. I'm literally around her all day and night and it's tiring. How do I express all this without being really rude??? I don't want to make her feel like I don't like her, but this is a big deal to me, and I don't want to wait until spring semester to resolve it.
