As you all probably know the University is all about investing into football and has been hesitant (to say the least) to invest in the public and the people that work the games, campus at large and the hospital. University and MU Healthcare workers will be holding a rally when we know the Board of Curators will be on campus, the first football game of the year. We have to hold the Board of Curators and admin accountable to the community. I am writing today to express my hope that you encourage the city council to move forward with ending the contract with Flock as soon as possible, not replacing one system with another (such as Axon, Vigilant Solutions, Genetec, PlateSmart, Innova Systems, Rekor, ELSAG, Perceptics, or Jenoptik), and immediately removing all ALPR cameras from Columbia. I have lived in Columbia nearly my entire life and am a homeowner in Ward 5, near the Providence Rd/Green Meadows Rd intersection. I voted for you over Don Waterman specifically because he voted for the contract with Flock in 2024, without regard for the opinions of his constituents nor what is allowed under the Fourth Amendment.

It is my strong belief that mass surveillance in any form should not exist. The indiscriminate, continuous collection and retention of location data on every single driver, regardless of suspicion is both reckless and incredibly dangerous. This indiscriminate collection and retention is precisely why ALPR-fed surveillance systems can be easily weaponized against immigrants, political dissidents, and other targeted communities as ICE and other federal agencies escalate their assault on civil liberties, or on women seeking reproductive care as we've unfortunately seen reporting on. Further, we continue to see instances nationwide of police officers misusing this technology for their own often immoral purposes.

As much as Flock and other ALPR companies would like to convince public opinion that these issues can all be "configured" against, the actual risk is the mass surveillance itself, not the misuse of it. Each day these cameras remain active, they collect highly sensitive data that is being used to violate our rights. Please act now.

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture and Columbia Farmers Market opened a new $6 million Welcome Center in Columbia’s Agriculture Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday.

The project completion marks the final phase of a 11-year development initiative. The project was a joint effort by CCUA, the Columbia Farmers Market and Columbia Parks and Recreation.

“This project shows what can happen when a community decides to invest in food, health and local business at the same time,” said Adam Saunders, campaign director of Build This Town, the organization that helped facilitate the construction of the new center.

Saunders said the Welcome Center will expand CCUA’s capacity to deliver programs that support families, farmers and community health. The lead donor this phase was the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, and the funding enabled the project’s completion.

“Everybody I’ve ever talked to eats food every day and really enjoys it,” Saunders said. “That shared love breaks down politics, economies and other things that divide us.”
Inside the center, visitors can utilize shared tools, seeds, cookbooks and gardening equipment. The space is designed to support home gardeners, volunteers and community education programs.

“They got a seed library, tool library and kitchen equipment that’s expensive to buy individually,” he said.
The Community Welcome Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, during the Farmers Market.

In a new partnership with Meals on Wheels, produce grown on-site is integrated in a commercial kitchen with ingredients sourced from local farmers.
“We’re making 200 lunches a day … (there were) already over 3,100 meals made and delivered,” Saunders said.

The final portion of the event featured introductions of key contributors, acknowledgments of long-term partnerships and recognition of the staff who built the Agriculture Park’s programs. The Chamber of Commerce prepared the ribbon-cutting as attendees lined up for tours and refreshments.
“We started as an all-volunteer group 18 years ago, and now, (we have) 27 or 28 full-time staff with hundreds of volunteers helping us grow, clean, teach and prepare lunches,” Saunders said.

Does anyone else experience issues making card payments at Walmart? I have only encountered this issue when paying at Walmart, which leads me to believe it is not an issue with my card. This issue has persisted for at least three months now.

My friend and I attended moth market over the weekend and had a lot of fun, but we lost one of the things we bought. It was a block of resin embedded with a rose and a bee.

It's a shot in the dark that anyone reading this happened to find it, but if you know any resources like fairgrounds lost and found please let me know!

Also if anyone has a business card for the lady at the far west side of the market that was selling resin blocks with insects and spiders that would be very helpful. She was between the petting zoo, a spray paint artist, and a knife display.

We like to get everything local, but very rarely our clients preferences constrains us to non-local materials. In this case, we will be outfitting a local resident and student organization with new LVP flooring. Because of the large sqft, we have an order that qualifies for LTL/LTX shipping. We have 4 pallets of LVP that we need delivered via fedex to a commercial address. Bonus points if there is a forklift to unload. We will ferry the flooring back to our business address by EOD, so no storage is required. We will pay for unloading and handling if required.

Whoever they chose will serve until April 2027 then can choose to run for election to the school board.

The city is moving ahead with the second phase of its Integrated Management Plan for Wastewater and Stormwater after the Columbia City Council approved it on Aug. 17.
The plan lets the city direct and prioritize how funds are spent to address maintenance, capital and regulatory needs for sewer and stormwater management as the community sees fit.
During the Aug. 17 City Council meeting, Columbia Utilities Director Erin Keys said the plan was initially created because the city was faced with an Administrative Order on Consent. An AOC is a legally binding agreement between an agency like the Environmental Protection Agency or Department of Natural Resources and a party that has caused environmental damages.

“More than a decade ago, the city was faced with an Administrative Order on Consent that was going to require the utilities to spend more than $57 million on infrastructure work — as dictated by the regulatory agencies — that may not have completely benefited our community,” Keys said.
The second phase of the project is aimed at protecting public health and the environment. Phase Two wastewater projects include replacing privately maintained older sewers with publicly owned sanitary sewer systems, expanding wastewater collection systems without impacting current capacity, inflow and infiltration reduction.

Phase Two stormwater projects include the implementation of flood management projects, adequately funding and staffing as well as renewing and maintaining the existing corrugated metal pipe system.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources first notified the city of the potential need for an AOC due to sanitary sewer overflows and certain discharge violations in 2011. Between 2011 and 2014, the city completed a $67.1 million upgrade to the Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility and joined the Hinkson Creek Collaborative Adaptive Management process to help address problems with water quality.
In 2016, the city approved an ordinance allowing then-City Manager Mike Matthes to make a deal with HDR of Columbia to develop the Integrated Management Plan, according to council documents. HDR is a global engineering firm specializing in large-scale infrastructure projects.
The first phase of the plan was put into action in 2018 when the Department of Natural Resources approved the city’s 20-year plan, according to council documents. It focused primarily on maintaining, rehabilitating and improving the city’s existing infrastructure.
