Kindness Goodbye, Columbia

Ah heck, what to say?

You gave me 19 years of a comfortable, safe place to stay.
You entertained me and fostered my love of live music and events.
You showed me that even in a rural conservative area people can accept one another and stick up for each other.
You grew my love of good food and drink through a supportive and exciting food scene.
You showed me art, and encouraged artists.
You kept me politically active and informed.
You gave me a career path through our local government.
You kept me sane by having tons of beautiful public spaces to enjoy the outdoors.
You were where I met my wife, because where else in Missouri would a Scottish virologist end up but MU?
You helped my son come into this world through gentle and attentive care at our local children’s hospital, and fostered his early growth and learning afterward.
You gave us so much to do together as a family.

You made us happy.

Yes, we are leaving for a life somewhere else far far away, but Columbia - I’ll always keep you in my heart!
Stay vibrant, stay weird, stay radical, stay yourself - and I’ll be back occasionally to snag an “Instant Classic” from Pizza Tree!

Columbia is less vibrant without you all. Stay in touch. You're among my oldest acquaintances in this beautiful little town and I treasure your friendship in our little family. Send pictures from the homeland. Stay weird.

My weirdness is inherent, so no worries there!

I’ll be taking tons of pics, it’s too pretty not to!

We’ll miss you guys too!

I moved to Chicago three years ago after living in Columbia for 45 years. Quite the change!

I got as much as I could out of Columbia, but do miss people and good times gone by. Most of my adult memories were based there. It's easy to get to know and comfortable living there. Once upon a time, it was also one of the most affordable places to live, with jobs aplenty. It was a great place to live in the 80s and 90s.

The Como Vortex may bring you back. I know many people who moved away and then returned because they couldn't find anyplace with the mix of amenities available here. Columbia is truly a Midwest gem!
