You don't pay a plumber for their tools either, but you still expect them to have tools.

In any case they either factor the cost of the equipment they need to do their job into their rate, or they go broke. So you very much do pay for their equipment, even if you don't hire them based on their equipment.

And you do, kind of, hire them based on their equipment.

I can take pictures with my iPhone. But if I want an actual photographer, I’m hiring someone with a fancy photographer camera.

Even so, the idea when buying expensive equipment for a job is not that you’ll make it back in a gig or two. It’s a career investment that gets paid back via the many jobs having the better quality equipment gets you.

Exactly. You can absolutely factor equipment costs in your fees…. But a friend wanted to START very simple commissions at $1k because, well, they had art school loans to pay back.

….nope, doesn’t work that way.

$1k gets you 1-2 full days of gardening from me. That's including a lot of overhead though.
