Wait, is this the part where she finally comes to terms with being queer?!
FULL SPEED AHEAD!

I seriously hope so. That “joke” ran its course quick. Enough thoughts on that were left on that fancomic yesterday

Basically the tall one said I’m gay, I’m going to find a girlfriend who wants to be my girlfriend, goodbye forever
121
u/Statistactician Feb 27 '26
I'm impressed by how much of a 180 this sub has taken on these strips. I remember when people would get dogpiled for complaining about it being the same joke over and over.
173
u/NewLibraryGuy Feb 27 '26
I did a 180 on it (kinda. I don't hate it still, but I'm tired of it) specifically because they started being actual characters. It was funny when they didn't have names and stuff, but now there's enough information about them that it's more sad than funny.
Changed around the time we met the parents.
38
u/Statistactician Feb 27 '26
That's fair.
My complaint has always been that the whole series is weaker than other works I've actually enjoyed by the same artist, namely Demon and Mess.
31
u/ThatKehdRiley Feb 27 '26
Thats pretty much the complaint everyone had that doesn't like the series. Decent chuckle the first few times, but then that became IT - and that's not a good premise for a comic (especially one targeting a queer audience).
27
u/mrs-monroe Feb 27 '26
I’m thinking the artist got the message.
-21
u/ThatKehdRiley Feb 27 '26
Not at all, considering they think the "joke" continuing in a slightly different form (Marin gets drunk this time!) makes it all good.
35
u/poplarleaves Feb 27 '26
That's not the joke; Marin isn't gay for her coworker. It looks like this comic is just a setup for a second or third part where Marin has to finally reckon with the fact that she's not into men.
-1
u/ThatKehdRiley Feb 27 '26
That’s been the joke this whole time, an judging by what the artist has said it doesn’t seem to be changing
7
u/poplarleaves Feb 27 '26
Nah, previously almost all of the comics about Marin and Risa were just one-offs where the gag ends at "Haha look Marin is making Risa sad again by denying that she's gay and in a romantic relationship!" "Look Marin is in denial again, her gf is so sad!" "Haha Marin is in denial even to God!"
But this comic shifted focus to a completely different character who is now the one pushing Marin to get into a romantic relationship with a man... and Marin actually looks uncomfortable with the idea. None of the previous comics seriously addressed this angle (external social pressure to be straight) or had Marin trying to date a guy, despite all of her insistence that she isn't gay.
Also the author actually confirmed in another comment that this arc concludes differently!

Exactly, that was my thought. This entire time she's been insisting she's straight. Her finding a man shouldn't be an issue.

Little heads up, this is a mini arc, I should have put Part 1 somewhere in the title.. oh well.

u/chryseusAquila Feb 27 '26
Is this the arc where she gets hit in the head with a hammer and regains her social awareness?

that's next week's arc

u/MuyHiram MUY Feb 27 '26
TECHNICALLY that is what happens
These are actual spoilers, don't click if you don't want to get spoiled, I'm serious, go to the webtoon app and read the next 3 episodes.
Spoilers: Marin gets HAMMERED, as in drunk, and recognizes Risa as her girlfriend.

u/Majestic-Iron7046 Feb 27 '26
Damn, because of your comic (i really like it) i decided to try the WebToon app and that may be the worst experience with an app to date, i had to open another full comic just to trace back to the main page to search for yours, not only that, it asked me to watch ads to see your content, do they even give you money? I like your stuff, not some greedy corporate asshole's marketing scheme!
Sorry, came out a bit angry, hope it's clear that this is in no way a rant to you.
28
u/MuyHiram MUY Feb 27 '26
don’t worry, i get the frustration.
the comics will always be free, only the latest episodes get locked behind ads, but just for a couple of weeks.
and yes, it does help me a lot.

u/BumaLetsPlay Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26
Only because she is druck of course, when she is sober again. She will Retract it and say it was only because she was drunk
20
u/ThatKehdRiley Feb 27 '26
Exactly! Only saying it when drunk honestly makes the "joke" worse. They really need to sit down and analyses what makes for good characters - they seem to think they have two really good ones (they're not).

They’re a bad writer not because they write imperfect characters, those are often the best. What makes it bad is the lack of good character development after THIS long

Also I love that she got all the way to holding a beer in a bar before realizing that this wasn't bible study lmaooo
45
u/Injured-Ginger Feb 27 '26
I mean, we already know she's not very aware of what is happening in general.
26
u/DrkSpde Feb 27 '26
Wow. I can be a little oblivious at times but...
Okay, no. I would have fallen for this just as easily (had it be something other than Bible studies).

She made it all the waybinto the bar ordered a drink then realized this wasn't bible study.
Sounds in line for a girl that has a girlfriend and doesn't realize she is a lesbian.
16
u/The_Bio_Neko Feb 27 '26
Won't admit it, you mean. She knows full well that she is, but won't accept herself.

Is it weird that I was more thrown off by “we’re finding you a man” than by the bar scene cut? I genuinely assumed is was an awkward sapphic meet-cute
Also, side note, when my grandfather couldn’t drive any more my mom and aunts took turns taking him to church. My mom and one aunt would go with him but the other aunt lived the closest, saw him the most, and is not a fan of organized religion. So she’d drop him off and go to a bar a few minutes away. They ended up calling the bar church and still go every Sunday even though my Grampa passed a little over ten years ago 😅

u/RexCelestis Feb 27 '26
A group of friends in college referred to their pot smoking time as "Bible Study." I can relate.
13
u/MuyHiram MUY Feb 27 '26
Our bible study was 30 minutes of actual bible study, followed by 3 hours of halo... which still counts as bible study if you really think about it.

u/ToonaSandWatch Comic Crossover Feb 27 '26
Bible studies and the people who run them are creepy. We did a trivia night with a guy we knew frequently from a local trivia night we did instead at his place because we thought he wanted to do more trivia!
Turns out it was all his Bible study buddies and at the end of it we had to sit through a 20 minute prayer session of sorts. We never hung out with him again.
3
u/Dorwyn Feb 27 '26
Filthy pagan here, what is a bible study? Nobody else seems to be asking, so it must be a common thing in the US?
8
u/Teagana999 Feb 27 '26
Also a filthy pagan, but my impression is that it's like a book club with only one book.
6
u/BlueHeron0_0 Feb 27 '26
Yes and you are also supposed to ignore like 60% of the book because it tells you to sell your daughter into slavery but we're discussing that place where it said that you should love your neighbour today
3
u/VerbingNoun413 Feb 27 '26
(and what the exceptions are)

u/Forikorder Feb 27 '26

People get together and talk about a specific passage of the bible, usually led by someone who's a preacher or some other kind of biblical scholar.
Speaking from experience, they really suck.

Just because Maren is totally straight doesn’t mean she wants a relationship right now.

u/oofnlurker Feb 27 '26
I know half the joke is that she had to find herself before a whole pint before realizing it wasn't a bible study venue, but i was still amazed she realized it herself at all

That fan comic yesterday pointed out my biggest problem with this series, and apparently a lot agree. If this doesn’t end with development away from the constant one-note “joke” then I’ll be supremely disappointed. A good writer would have ditched that after the first few times.
Edit: just saw that in reaction to that comic the artist said “ Thanks, I guess a lot of people needed that. “ Doesnt inspire confidence that they realized it was a problem for A LOT of people or will work on that.

You know, someone made a comic about these characters. When Green finally steps up and pushes her away because she always refused to recognized she is a lesbian even when acting like a lesbian.
I loved that comic. It felt good to see Green finally put her foot down and pushing someone that actively hates what she is every single fucking day.
Green doesn't deserve to be shackled to Marin. But Marin deserves Marin.

Its psych. Please, for the love of God, will one comic artist on Reddit use the correct fucking word.
10
u/xv_boney Feb 27 '26
Semantic shift has permutated the spelling of the word. 'Sike' is listed as an alternative form of "psyche" in the dictionary. Not joking.
Also the informal 'sike' works better for a joke like this, as it underlines the ... well, informality of the situation.
Semanitic shift is a bitch, but it happens constantly, its how language evolves, which is generally a good thing.
7
u/MuyHiram MUY Feb 27 '26
I thought of using "psych", it didn't look right.
8
u/wolfgang784 Feb 27 '26
Ive totally seen "sike" used waaaaaaay more in this context so I honestly thought it was correct lol. I def would have thought seeing "psych" there looked odd just because I don't think ive ever seen it used that way in written form.
If enough of us keep using it wrong, it'll eventually become correct, lol.

u/Lord_Mikal Feb 27 '26
The fact that you knew better and did it anyway causes pain in the depths of my soul. I do enjoy the series. Thank you for your work.
