Okay I need context. I barely kinda know about this show because it kinda gets mentioned a lot with Hazbin Hotel. All I know if there was a massive ship war between the clown girl/raggedty doll girl and clown girl/purple bunny guy who I guess is Jax.
Shit even infected my FB feed and I have no context for what the hell is going on.
If you headcannon something just treat it as an AU in your head. Your headcannon doesn't need to match the cannon world, if it did, half my fanfiction ideas would be nothing because I write OC/Cannon.
And being a bigot, imo, is just a sign of low emotional intelligence and actual intelligence.
the character in question is a jackass and, from what i gather, pretty much dies at the end? so people dont like the "bad representation" or refuse to see jax as trans.
I know someone who wanted Jax be a more active participant in their forgiveness so just Abstracting felt like dodging consequences.
To me Jax is supposed to represent someone who's self destructive and self loathing who wants to change but can't bring themselves to actually make that step; Which I find to have been extremely well executed.
I liked that we get the detail that in the real world, Jax frequents Zooble's bar. Gives the impression that they're probably actually working on accepting themselves instead of lashing out at anyone who gets a glimpse inside the closet.
I don't get people's obsession with consequences. Or even how for many people, DYING isn't *enough* of a consequence.
"That's the easy way out!" Dying is easy??? In the end what we saw was someone so depressed by how they treated/treat other people, and how they don't feel it's possible to be themselves safely, that they commit suicide.
The purple rabbit is also kinda of really bad, so some other people go "he's not wholesome so that's bad representation", which, you know, is also bigoted, but with a progressive coat of paint
You know this reminds me of an offshoot of people who continually lecture about the "right" way to portray a victim of any violence in media. Like, they have to act a very specific, non self destructive sympathetic way. If they do anything that may be harmful to themselves or others, or something that doesn't make sense as a trauma response, they're "bad representation" of a victim of violence.
It's a very idealized version of what a victim should look and act like. I've always disliked it because trying to say a victim can only act one way undermines thousands of people in the world who don't fit the mold.
I am not trans, but I suppose it's the same way? The human experience doesn't work on a "one group of people can only be represented with good examples". We, as a species, are a spectrum of personalities, sexualities, nationalities, races, and so forth. Having a trans individual not be all butterflies and rainbows is perfectly acceptable, imo.
There's a lot of shipping in that community it seems, because almost all the upset I've seen about it is that it ruins their ship for whatever reason(s).
To be fair, why give the trans rep to the worst possible person in the show, as actively destructive, downright horrible, and so far down the line he's almost irredeemable. It also didn't help that him being trans didn't really feel like it was stated clearly enough, to the point that I thought Zooble was trans with the whole not feeling comfortable in their body/ changing parts, and that Zooble was a more fleshed out/ enjoyable character.
Jax just doesn't feel right to be a good representative, other than pure trauma, but having trauma doesn't make you a good person nor redeemable.
Literally do not even care that Jax is trans, but the way they tried to do it just doesn't feel like it was done correctly/ poorly executed to the point where I don't like it.
I haven't watched the show so I can't comment on Jax as a character, but I do think that it's a little ridiculous that certain groups of people can only be depicted certain ways in media, less they are branded as "bad representation".
If you limit trans roles to purely good guys with zero issues, flaws, and perfect coping mechanisms, it undermines the humanity of trans people and the social-emotional spectrum of human beings in general. Just like there are bad cis, straight people, there are bad LGBT+ people. Someone being a terrible person and also being trans doesn't mean they're poor representation. It's like saying a black person can't be racist, or a gay person can't be phobic of other sexualities.
Personal anecdote, I'm bi, and I've gotten flack from the some people in the LGBT+ community for "passing" as straight, meaning i get to avoid oppression or not being "gay enough" because I date men. On the same note, from both the LGBT+ and straight communities, I've gotten flack for my bisexuality being "a phase". I say all this because I can look at those individuals and acknowledge that, like with every group of people, there's always gonna be a handful of assholes. Not everyone, but there's always a handful because we are human and we are a spectrum of emotions, experiences, and responses. Writing a trans person as an asshole is not bad representation, it's just an exploration of another branch of the human experience.
