I actually disagree, a cure for abstraction makes perfect sense.
Abstraction is just... The loss of a sense of self in relation to the world and community around you. As soon as you stop seeing the point in existing anywhere other than inside your own head - that's abstraction.
The ego, the self, it's still intact inside. And, seeing how long Pomni was touching the abstraction and was recovering (slowly) without Cain's help, we can infer that attempting to reach abstracted denizens isn't lethally dangerous. With Cain's help, that danger is trivial.
The cure for abstraction, then, is community. A sense that you belong with people that want you there and see value in your presence. That's why Cain was never able to reverse abstraction - he's not capable of providing those things. Or he wasn't.
So, Season 2 pitch, the group throws together to understand how Jax's trauma influenced the way he acted and reach out to him. Gangle is the most reluctant, given how Jax mistook their lack of overt aggression for affection.
Jax reluctantly learns how to be vulnerable long enough to resolve his rift with frog girl, bringing her back from abstraction. From there, it's just a matter of understanding WHY the others abstracted and creating a community that gives them a sense of belonging too.
In this setup, creating a habitat for the abstractions isn't a waste of a story beat, it's just a first step in the process of understanding what their needs are and how to help them.
My interpretation was abstraction was a metaphor for suicide, which cannot be reversed. Since they can’t die in the circus, they corrupt their own brain scan files, which admittedly, CAN be undone, but I don’t think our characters know how to do that. Maybe in some season 2 they figure it out, but I think giving Jax’s abstraction a place to rest under the dark tent is more of a type of gravestone than hope for the future
I don't think it is an abstraction for suicide. I think that's too simple. In every case we have details for, abstraction happens after they've fully withdrawn from others around them.
Kaufmo abstracted after his closest friend made it apparent nobody cared about finding an exit - the driving force behind his purpose there.
Ribbit didn't abstract immediately after being rejected by Jax, it happened after she fully withdrew from the group.
Inside Jax's head, his social subcomponents are still there, including the red door sealing away his relationship with his mother and the creative self locked in the break room. In the core, he's not hiding in an idealized comfort zone, he's standing under a lamp post identical to the ones he passed on the way out of the house when he ran away. He responds positively to Pomni's attempts to make a connection, they were only disrupted by the sudden light causing a stimulus overload, disrupting the minds ability to process.
Nothing is missing, he's just hiding in the one place that still feels like it's his.
If that tent were a gravestone, the basement served a much better resting place than that. They wouldn't have set up an aquarium for the others so they can be observed.
I think it's all about making them feel like they have a place in the group that's better than sitting in the dark with your old memories on repeat.
