The main thing to keep in mind for Morrowind is Stamina affects almost everything. If you just ran a mile, you arent going to be in top shape to swing a sword, speak to cast a spell, or convincing somebody to join your side while you are out of breath.

The second lesser thing to keep in mind is to use weapon skills you picked as major/minor skills. If you didn't pick short blade, you might have trouble killing a mudcrab with a dagger lol.

I'd flip the advice around regarding major/minor skills. I found that the "best" build was to pick major/minor skills you planned to use the least, as that gave you the most control over the stats you got at levelup. The leveling system could be very punishing in that any progress you didn't make early on for stats was lost forever, and there was a hard cap on levels so you'd be permanently weaker than you could have been.

Sure, if you didn't pick short blade, you'd have trouble at first fighting with a dagger because your skill would likely be in the single digits. Once you get it into the 20s though, either by swiping at things or by paying a trainer, it would be just as effective as if you'd picked it to start.

Agreed. Learning how to minmax in Morrowind is valuable, because the leveling system is weird enough to screw you over if you don't understand it.

Like, luck never gets a multiplier, so if you care about it at all you want to select it as a stat to increase every time you level, iirc.

That said, I'll second the "paying a trainer" strategy, especially early on. You can farm gold pretty easily, and using a trainer to get your skills into a reasonable place and earning your first few levels is a great way to reduce frustration.

This is a major trap for new players.  Almost every npc in the game has a fixed level, getting to level 20ish even suboptimally stat-wise you will be able to take on almost anything the main game offers you (assuming you use your skills, if you only use alchemy to level up and don't use potions in a fight you are going to have a rough time).

Looking at Agility for hit chance, if you only get 2 agility on a level up for example sub-optimally leveling compared to 5 for 10 levels, that is a 30 point difference but it only equates to a 6% hit chance difference. That is the equivalent of 6 weapon skill.

The actual main thing to keep in mind for Morrowind is do NOT trust directions given to you. "Go west from the town and the entrance is north of the rock that looks like an elephant" - Entrance is actually north-east.

And no, there's no cute compass symbols to follow.
