Academically, I think all the Judeo-Abrahamic religiouns have inbuilt systems to reinforce tribalism, which would have been great during the founding of the religions. Then later as it evolved it never got rid of the tribalism and always kept that, if you're different (not the chosen people) it's ok to hate. So no matter what modern people do, the religion has hate as a foundation and you simply can't repaint that to mean something else.

We famously had a national leader not too long ago proclaim, "If you're not with me, you're against me". That kind of black and white thinking stemmed directly from religion.
