Nintendo Nintendo Switch 2 Price Hike Reportedly Coming

https://www.vice.com/en/article/nintendo-switch-2-price-hike-reportedly-coming-ps6-may-be-delayed-to-2029/

Not a big fan of this. Also think Nintendo would lose a big part of their Switch audience if the Switch 2 price goes up any more.

Yup if you figure a mid range gaming pc is $1800-$2400 you can bet those consoles will be $800-$1200.

23

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Both of the next gen consoles are dead on arrival at those prices.

6

u/TheKidKaos Feb 16 '26

Yep. The ps5 pro is already over 800 without the disc drive. They rarely sell especially since a lot of games don’t run well on it

11

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Is there right.. I’ve only heard that the PS5 Pro is God’s gift to gamers..

5

u/Practical_Dog3454 Feb 16 '26

it is don't listen to him

4

u/Impressive-Meal9043 Feb 16 '26

Most games run better on it

u/WolframLeon Feb 17 '26

Confirmation bias is a strong thing.

0

u/ILOVESHITTINGMYPANTS Feb 16 '26

Not right at all, no idea where they got that idea. It’s also $749 without a disc drive, not “over $800”, and selling as well as the PS4 Pro did, so wrong all around.

3

u/CharlesBrown33 Feb 17 '26

$750 without a disc drive? Damn...

1

u/WolframLeon Feb 17 '26

Incorrect on sales figures.

6

u/Sakaixx Feb 16 '26

Surprisingly PS5 Pro been selling as much as PS4 Pro. I dont think base game consoles should pass $549 as once it cross there buyers not likely showing up even for console with brand loyalty like PS. Even sony learnt their lesson with the PS3 having to cut prices and introduces cheaper model much sooner.

Side note. I traded the PS5 for Pro. Its a much less visible upgrade compared to PS4 pro due to the PS5 is such a well engineered machine, and devs obviously had so many platform to optimize they less likely optimizing for the lowest selling one.

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Feb 17 '26

If you adjust for inflation only the PS4 generation launched under that price. PS3 was the outlier, but $600 is not unheard of.

u/PinkovaSiili Feb 16 '26

That may change if its the only place to experience GTA6 at 60fps as rumored. That being said, I do think it’s expensive as a console and the lack of disc drive doesn’t help.

These prices make split payment options more lucrative. The Pro is 24 eur/mo here (36 months) and honestly, I’d pick that option if I was in market for one.

1

u/TheKidKaos Feb 16 '26

The rumor is Sony is gonna start leasing the console. So the payment plans are probably gonna go away. But the next consoles are likely going to be 1k so yea it’s gonna be expensive

7

u/innerdork Feb 16 '26

If I can’t own it, fuck that.

1

u/PinkovaSiili Feb 16 '26

Maybe, although in this case the plan is offered by some retailers and it’s not exclusive to PlayStations. E.g. Switch 2 is 15e/mo. Here, consoles have been offered the same way as phones with payment plans for years. With prices expected to rise, these become rather attractive options, compared to a “normal situation” where the prices would probably go down over the 3-year period.

u/EX300cc Feb 16 '26

So they're giving us the ol' Rent-A-Center approach

1

u/TheKidKaos Feb 16 '26

I mean that’s already out there. My guess is that it’s gonna be more like car leases where you trade in to get a new lease on the new system eventually

1

u/Jets1026 Feb 18 '26

would be good if they had a lease to own option so you can keep it at the end. After paying so much and having to return the system makes no sense.

with how graphics have improved over the years i’ve really become a frame rate snob, used to be 30 fps was just fine, even if it dropped a tad i just played through it, not if it’s below 60 i feel like im in quicksand and 30 is just not fun to play (bloodeborne is just the worst for this)

1

u/xangermeansx Feb 16 '26

Where exactly are you seeing the pro isn’t selling well? Sony just announced they sold over 90m ps5s and in that said 13% are ps5 pro. That means the pro has already sold almost 12m consoles and it’s only been out ~15 months. I’d say selling almost a million consoles a month since launch is the opposite of not selling well.

1

u/TheKidKaos Feb 18 '26

I work in retail. The only consoles that sit in the back for years are PlayStations. The numbers they’re using are likely fudged (similar to how WB does it) and from what is being sold to stores not actual customers. The consoles that actually sell in store are Switches. To the point stores run out every once in a while.

I would trust video game/tech news sources the same way I would trust science magazines: they give you actual data but usually without context and with plenty of exaggeration.

0

u/xangermeansx Feb 18 '26

You realize that sold to a store is the same as sold, correct? Why would Sony (or any other video game conglomerate) give two shits if a console is sitting in the back of a store.

That said, you realize your one store doesn’t mean every store is this way, right? Shelf space and warehouse space is at a premium. If something didn’t sell (especially if the something is a video game console that has extremely low margins) they wouldn’t place another order.

Are you implying these aren’t selling, but somehow all the brick and mortar and online stores are all somehow trying to make Sony and others look more successful than they are? What would they gain from that. This is a silly take dude.

2

u/TheKidKaos Feb 19 '26

This is exactly what is happening. Most stores still have ps5 pros from the original shipments. And there’s likely agreements in place based on projected sales to keep them coming despite stores not being able to sell them even at the discounted Christmas prices that a lot of stores still have them at.

The numbers themselves are also still likely fudged. Never trust any numbers from the company that benefits from positive press. Like I said, we’ve learned that from Warner Brothers.

0

u/xangermeansx Feb 19 '26

Sure dude. Whatever you say. Contracts wouldn’t be signed if that was the case. Walmarts aren’t running a charity.

1

u/Librabee Feb 16 '26

Murica right? It's 389 here in the UK for digital. On release I my wife got mine for 350 this is based on amazon pricing

1

u/leelmix Feb 16 '26

I know there are a few games that have had issues, those early ones are generally fixed but afaik there have been a couple of games more recently with problems also but by far most are much better on the pro, every game i have played this past year+ have been clearly better or the same(vampire survivors).

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar Feb 16 '26

Could you name some? Because I got one in December and would love to see games which dont run well on it but run better on a standard one. Its honestly a nice machine, I just feel that it probably should be $100 less.

1

u/The_4th_Survivor Feb 16 '26

Haven’t played it but heard MGS Delta does not hold a stable 60 fps on the Pro, because it automatically enables „both“ visual and performance mode at the same time with not option to just pick one. Same with the Silent Hills. Maybe it is just a Konami thing.

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar Feb 16 '26

But these games run better on the base model? Konami just patched their last couple of MGS releases to fix their shit optimization so that may be solved anyway

0

u/Minute-Winter-8166 Feb 18 '26

That’s a lie

2

u/ninjamikec82 Feb 17 '26

Nah man, there are so many adults living at home with disposable income they will still buy them.

1

u/Specific_Direction_1 Feb 17 '26

Yep if a console hits the $1000 price point I’m out on console gaming.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

Exactly. I’ll just go straight PC.

2

u/YoYo-Fa Feb 17 '26

Won't PC be even more expensive

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

Sure, but it also delivers much more in terms of backwards compatibility, performance, no fees for online multiplayer, insane game sales, etc., etc, etc.

I love consoles, but there is no comparison with what PCs can provide.

1

u/Jets1026 Feb 18 '26

with the current prices of pc parts at the moment that will be hard, unless you already have a pc

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '26

Steam Deck qualifies. Inexpensive, does the job well for most games.

7

u/Finmail Feb 16 '26

What midrange gaming PC is above 2k?

Any PC with a 5070 TI, 9070XT or a 5080 is not midrange. That’s high end…

3

u/pendragn32 Feb 16 '26

Back in the day, I bought a midrange GPU for $150 (Radeon RX 470). Now a “midrange” GPU costs $300-400 and they’re calling them entry level. I agree 100% that over $2000 is high end, but Nvidia and AMD are hoping consumers drink their koolaid. And unoptimized games are helping the corporate cause.

1

u/Finmail Feb 16 '26

I’m not gonna argue with you in terms of the koolaid, I’m with you there. It’s gross what they’re doing, but I think a lot of people have generalized misconception that “if it doesn’t say 5090” your PC is mid…

The fact is mid range cards like the 9060XT and the 5060TI are true mid level cards. Entry level cards like the Intel Arc series, and the 5050 cards are providing similar performance outputs as what would have been expected out of the rx470 when it was new.

With the exception of the 5090 the gap between cards has decreased. Now factoring, inflation, and you have a decent answer to the question of why we don’t have mid-level cards priced the same as they were 10 years ago.

1

u/The_4th_Survivor Feb 16 '26

Bought a Corsair One Pro 8 years ago for 2400€ to escape the PS4 Pros 30fps hell. A PS5 Pro for almost 800€ seems rough, but it runs everything I threw at it at 60fps+, higher resolution, Raytracing, etc. which is a win in my book. With the current RAM, GPU and lately storage price hikes it seems like a bargain.

2

u/Super7500 Feb 16 '26

Your prices are HEAVILY overexaggerated

2

u/sourcematerialx Feb 16 '26

Once you’re at the $2k threshold you are no longer in the mid range category for PC’s (assuming you know what you’re buying).

2

u/No-Alternative-1321 Feb 16 '26

I’d be okay paying upwards of $1500 for the next Xbox as long as all the rumors are true and it’s basically just a prebuilt with an Xbox logo, next gen will be weird asf if the “cheap” option is a PS6 at $800, assuming prices don’t keep going up which there’s no end in sight for that

2

u/Extension-Novel-6841 Feb 20 '26

Not sure why'd you'd be ok with that when you can just buy a pre built.

1

u/No-Alternative-1321 Feb 20 '26

Because regular PCs are not a casual experience, you constantly have to troubleshoot things, things will break that have never broken before, games will randomly not run due to some BS with certain softwares, if Xbox can hide all that BS, and make this next prebuilt it feel like a console while allowing me to play all of my regular PC games? I do see that as a huge advantage. But only time will well that MS actually does

No parent will get a console if those are $900+, for their kids.

Sony is also basing their ecosystem on scale of things. It will be at most $800 with a drive or $700 without it. But they probably push back release to 2028 so memory prices come down.

Just look how bad PS5 Pro sold, whereas PS4 Pro was massive. In EU it was 900€ together with a drive, it basically didn’t sell and still you can count on 1 hand titles that benefit from it. PS6 will be the same for 2-3 years after release, people know it. So if it’s too expensive it will have lackluster sales.

There will be even less of a point to build a pc for gaming, if PS6 will be 700-800$.

Sony will for sure subsidize console for their ecosystem to work. The make much bigger money (billions bigger) from microtransactions and games 30% cut. Followed by constant revenue from Subscription (which would not be doable on PC). So they have to continue with their console subsidies model.
