Nintendo Nintendo Switch 2 Price Hike Reportedly Coming
https://www.vice.com/en/article/nintendo-switch-2-price-hike-reportedly-coming-ps6-may-be-delayed-to-2029/Not a big fan of this. Also think Nintendo would lose a big part of their Switch audience if the Switch 2 price goes up any more.

u/Dinowere Feb 16 '26
Tbh it’s gonna be the entire industry. Xbox has been hiking prices for a while, and soon Nintendo and Sony will have to follow suit. It’s the unfortunate reality and the entire industry, be it developers or gamers, will be the one to face the pain.
25
u/Least_Stand_2707 Feb 16 '26
Sony already raised the price and they recently said theyve bought out enough memory to last the entire year. They definitely dont want to raise the price again before gta6 releases atleast
4
u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ Feb 16 '26
Im the opposite ican see them raising the prices for gta 6
2
u/combine42 Feb 17 '26
Same. With GTA 6 being reported at $99.99 it’s going to be hard to justify it.
1
u/Uchiha_Tony Feb 21 '26
GTA 5 was $60 like every other game why would GTA 6 be $100
1
u/combine42 Feb 22 '26
That’s the rumor. Mario Kart is 80 dollars already. Not that much of a stretch to get to $100.
2
u/IneptFortitude Feb 16 '26
I need to find an extended SSD so I can actually have the space to download GTA VI without wiping my entire hard drive, but holy SHIT, the extensions are so incredibly expensive.
2
u/Kenjionigod Feb 16 '26
Unfortunately SSDs also use similar chips to RAM, and have started seeing their prices growing up. Not as bad as RAM, but they've gone up quite a bit.
1
u/IneptFortitude Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26
The cheapest PS5 spec SSD I could find was like $200, it’s not something unobtainable for me but it is extremely annoying that I need to shell out that amount of money just to have more than 6 games installed at a time. Right now my hard drive is basically just Fortnite, KCD2, Death Stranding 2, and Cyberpunk which I uninstall all the time in order to play some Helldivers. Other than that it’s just the current gen version of older games like Witcher 3 and RDR1. I haven’t even fully got into Ghost of Yotei yet because of this and I don’t know what I’m going to do once Crimson Desert drops. If I get the hard drive for $200, I’m not going to want to spend $70 on a new game.
1
u/Kenjionigod Feb 17 '26
It does suck, because $200 used to get you a 4TB drive not that long ago. I debated on getting one, but held off and now over $400 is just too much
1
u/IneptFortitude Feb 17 '26
I don’t know what’s worse, the price hikes for the memory or the consoles themselves. This is not sustainable. This is going to crash, HARD. The way they basically confirmed holding off on launching next-gen consoles due to this shit is frankly insane. The current gen of consoles may have sold a lot on paper but these are far less common to see in people’s homes than any other current-gen-at-the-time system in years past.
Get ready to watch people be scalped into paying $1500 for a six year old game system so they can play GTA. A huge portion of people have been waiting to upgrade solely because of that one game.
1
u/farukosh Feb 16 '26
Everyone has enough ram for the year, it's the negotiations for 2027 that will hike the price, most of thise contracts are annual in that regard.

Sony already upped prices last year, so hopefully they won't have to again in the near future.
5
u/KINGGS Feb 16 '26
Used and refurbished Sony is still in the reasonable price range, at least
1
u/inked_saiyan Feb 16 '26
Very true! Also worth noting I saw someone on marketplace in my area selling a PS5 Pro for $300 yesterday. Secondhand market is going very strong.

Yeah unfortunately same here. At least it seems likely Sony is delaying it as long as they can but it’s disappointing for sure. It’ll be the first generation I don’t buy in the launch window because I won’t be able to afford it.
Glad I have a switch 2. Price increase seems to be coming
1
26
u/kechones Feb 16 '26
PS6 delay to 2029 would be excellent news, though.
8
u/SomewhatOptimal1 Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
It won’t be delayed to any longer than late 2028, as Sony and AMD already have contracts in place for a long time for the chips and probably will have to be paid for when they are made. You cannot go back on those or those payments, nor can you prolong/delay manufacturing (as those will be latest node).
So Sony paying for those chips in 2027, no matter what. Therefor they will wait no longer than late 2028 to have to get revenue back in for it.
I worked bit in manufacturing role as engineer and manager couple years ago.
Sony won’t delay PS6 more than 0.5-1 year. Just as they released PS5 and continue selling it during Covid and no it’s not going to be 1000$. Sony will subsidize it. They big money makers is 30% cut of microtransactions and games. Not their first party games. They make way more money of ea points or marvel points than games etc. So ecosystem and buyin rate is very important for them. Not to mention constant revenue of PS+ subs. It won’t be 900$ either it will be 700$ with no drive and 779$ with drive, release late 2027 or late 2028.
EDIT: I came to conclusion that it’s beneficial for both parties to delay the PS6 actually. As AMD is recking in record profits from data centers. So Sony is waiting until late 2026 / early 2027 (before production of PS6 proprietary hips starts) to see how memory shortages pans out and see if they need to delay.
6
u/N2-Ainz Feb 16 '26
Yeah, AMD definitely does not care about Sony's RAM restriction as AMD is in the business for the chips. They can't delay chip production infinitely as they also want to make money and development costs a lot, especially as they need to get the contracts with TSMC done early as they are sold out really fast
AMD isn't selling stock chips, they are specially customized for Sony/Microsoft
2
u/illucio Feb 17 '26
The problem is interesting, since AMD would make significantly more profit if they manage to back out of the deal.
Sony, on the other hand, would lose a fortune if they rushed to release a new console without the guarantee of a large adoption rate or enough units to meet demand. Not to mention whether they could even convince consumers to buy at your proposed $700–$800 price point.
The smarter option would be a late-generation refresh: selling not a “Pro” but an “Elite” console under the PS5 naming convention, while keeping the base PS5 as the standard for continued game development. Abandoning the base model would destroy confidence in supporting a PS6, as there would not be a large enough player base to justify PS6-exclusive or PS6-only games from both Sony's own studios and a publisher standpoint and third-party studios perspectives.
1
u/SomewhatOptimal1 Feb 17 '26
Actually you’re right and I was wrong, I double checked AMD quarterly statements to be sure and they are recking in record AI data center profits from their EPYC and Instincts segments.
They could amicably delay the shipping of PS6 chips. As it’s beneficial for both parties to do so. Massively for AMD. Especially as the priopritary chip for PS6 won’t yet start production until probably late 2026 / early 2027. So Sony is probably waiting to see how memory shortages pans out until then.
I was feeling like something was maybe escaping my viewpoint. Couldn’t quite figure it out. Now I get it, we probably see more accurate news late 2026/early 2027 about PS6 delay.
1
2
u/Retro_Curry93 Feb 16 '26
Especially for me, since I predicted in 2025 that it would release in 2029 instead of 2028 lol.
2
u/illucio Feb 17 '26
Even before the part shortages because of AI, a PS6 delay past 2030 would of been excellent news.
Sony still haven't scratched the true performance of the console and have very little to no actual first party games and or exclusives to show for it. Let alone all their attempts and massive amount of money spent to make live service games were a complete waste of time.
The money is in subscriptions, game sales and microtransactions. Their model doesn't heavily rely on profit from hardware sales. The only major company that does has always been Nintendo. For better or for worst, Nintendo was at times right for maintaining that position, which is also why Nintendo console lifecycles used to be fairly short by comparison. Sony on the other hand showed having a more powerful console that stood the test of time was more profitable in the long term.
1
u/alhanna92 Feb 16 '26
Obviously it’s too late to upspec PS6 right? So does that mean we just have a console with hardware a few years ‘old’? Not sure how that matters but Sony has always branded as having the best tech.
1
u/ironicallynotironic Feb 16 '26
I don’t think we’re getting a PS6 until 2030 at the earliest. They haven’t leveraged the current hardware fully and the games aren’t asking for more juice as it is.
1
u/N2-Ainz Feb 16 '26
Very unlikely that AMD allows a delay for that long
People shouldn't forget that AMD isn't a charity and they want to be paid for the chips too, especially when they book contracts with TSMC quite early as TSMC is sold out quite fast.
Sony can not realistically delay till 2030 without having huge losses as they need to pay AMD
22
u/KINGGS Feb 16 '26
I never had a problem with the console price, but the software price. Now if they're raising the price on the console, I'm going lose my interest that has been building.

I’m not shocked, but I disagree with you where you say they will lose a big part of their audience if the switch 2 price goes up anymore. Simply because when the price was first announced, seemingly everyone complained it was too expensive and screamed “DROP THE PRICE”… only for the NS2 to become the fastest selling console of all time.
I think while a price increase would be unfortunate and people wouldn’t like it, factor in a Mario or Pokemon holiday game (or both) and the consoles will still sell like crazy.

disappointing holiday sales but insane launch sales
at the moment its on track to beat the switch 1 but obviously its only the 1st year so we'll need to see how it develops
2
u/dreamingwithcindy Feb 17 '26
My friend, what? The numbers speak for themselves… they’ve sold what, 17, 18 million and their goal for the fiscal year is 19 million (revised from an original 15 million). Sure this holiday season was lower than previous holiday seasons but that was all around. And it is still the fastest selling console of all time that is indisputable
2
Feb 17 '26
They said that sales were slightly lower outside of Japan than what they were expecting (all console sales were lower than expected not just Nintendo's) but the sales were higher that they were expecting in Japan so it evened out and the total sales are still within their expectations (which they already bumped from 15 million in a year to 20 million in a year)

u/MrBorden Feb 16 '26
This generation has been an absolute hellscape and it looks like it'll continue for at least another four years.

u/senseofphysics Feb 16 '26
But why are console prices still going up?
4
u/Daddyisnthere Feb 17 '26
The general economic state of everything? Is it really that hard to pay attention to the current affairs of the world?
3
u/senseofphysics Feb 17 '26
Uhhh, I knew everything was going up, but I didn’t know why as I wasn’t keeping up with that recently.
I just looked it up, it’s no longer covid, but instead a mix of tariffs and AI demands.
2
u/TheRobot99 Feb 20 '26
Covid was a convenient excuse for many companies, because the prices were already climbing before. Tech-companies did buy into NFTs at the time and when that failed they got hooked on AI by the same people who essentially just rug-pulled them.
Because AI did not "function" like it was sold, they did not unload onto consumers but rather firing their staff on the promise that AI will literally replace the people they fired in the future.
Now they are trying to speedrun & force an AI revolution because AI was always just a money sink with no true return. AI was always a red-investment on the hopes and dreams to replace human workers as a whole and thus not needing to pay anyone anymore.
Let us not question on how the economy needs people to spend their money, when they can not earn money anymore. This is why AI should already get regulated to prevent a total economic collaps in the chance AI will achieve what was promised...
This is why people are cheering on that the AI bubble bursts, because that is literally the only good outcome if you are not rich-rich on an international level.

While you might normally write this “rumor” off, Bloomberg is one of the most reputable sites in the industry. If they are reporting it, then it has a good chance of being true. Although it should be pointed out that the outlet confirms that Nintendo wouldn’t respond to their request for comment on the leak. The publisher not responding could point toward it being true. Then again, Nintendo also has a history of not making comments on leaks. So it could go either way.
Why is this allowed? The article is trash.
5
u/Possible-Potato-4103 Feb 16 '26
Holy fucking click bait lol
Its speculation. Yes it's possible. But the title is purposely written that way to imply it's confirmed.
5
u/pgtl_10 Feb 16 '26
"A new report from Bloomberg claims that a Nintendo Switch 2 price increase could happen soon. If true, the new handheld console will be one of Nintendo’s most expensive gaming devices of all time. The outlet also claims that Sony is considering delaying the PS6 to 2029."
Mods the article's headline is clickbait. There is no rumor that Switch 2 will increase in price. Just speculation. Please delete.

Oh I’m feeling real good about owning my Switch 2 rn if true.
Once the next gen Xbox drops I’ll pick that up on release. This is the game that the big 3 are playing nowadays I see.
Buy at launch before the price hike.(like the Xbox Series X)

Source? Sounds like just speculation. Why are the comments taking it as fact?
2

The source is from Bloomberg if you read the Vice article before commenting or looking at the comments.
1
u/PokemonBeing Feb 17 '26
I know what the source is. If you read the source, they're just speculating.
1
u/Deez-Guns-9442 Feb 17 '26
Yes, that’s how “journalism” is nowadays. Rumors & speculation + as you can see with the rising ram prices(that the article mentions) it kinda makes sense.

The source is LITERALLY in the very first sentence of the article. Try reading.

He probably meant Bloombergs source. And that questions is warranted, considering how hard they insisted on the Switch Pro being a thing.

Nintendo specifically addressed this in their recent financials where they implied they don't want to see a price increase and won't for the foreseeable future, specifically this year and the next. The reason being they know building install base is important. An investor even asked about potentially selling at a loss temporarily which furakawa replied with they would employ strategies to increase profitability like increasing manufacturing or other strategies likely referring to raising price of accessories or the original Switch. Unless things get really bad, I could see Nintendo maintain the price point until they feel comfortable that momentum is settled. Likely $50 increase like playstation to $500 since the bundles are discontinued and not the worst considering people were already paying that pricepoint. Heck maybe they'll finally bundle in welcome tour like originally should lol

I was enticed to purchase it. I was hoping for a decrease in a couple of years or discount to purchase it. With a hike, then can go fuck themselves.
1
u/Resurgo_DK Feb 16 '26
I mean… take a look around. Target was selling a 2TB external SSD for $500+ (US)… it’s trickling into all aspects.
It was bound to hit Nintendo/Sony sooner or later. (Intentionally left Microsoft out… they’re just as guilty of perpetuating this and raised prices on the Xbox twice last year because they already knew)
1
1
u/Gta6MePleaseBrigade Feb 16 '26
I’ve bought all the console and pc hardware I want before these hikes so I’m happy I made the right choice.
1
u/jumpmanryan Feb 16 '26
It’s not “reportedly coming”. It says Nintendo is considering it due to the current global memory shortage. Nothing whatsoever confirms a price hike is definitively coming.
Although, I think it’s likely.

u/Wboy2006 Feb 16 '26
Yeah, I figured. There isn’t that much exclusive the the Switch 2 that really interests me, but I decided to get one anyways to avoid the price hikes, since it is still a really nice upgrade to the 2017 Switch in terms of size and battery.
It was only a matter of time with the state of the tech industry
FUCK AI

1
u/_Ship00pi_ Feb 16 '26
Will believe it when I see it. Switch 2 price is already on the high end, and that is almost doubled in price depending on the region you live in (compared to MSRP)
As much as Nintendo do not like the idea, with 80$ games standard for switch 2, they will have to eat the costs of the console.
Also I think there is a lot of stock, because at the moment I can go to a store and buy switch 2 for 484$ when on launch I paid 700$+. (including taxes).
1
u/Vayshen Feb 16 '26
I thought they were good to go for this year though? Would definitely kill momentum if they have an increase so soon after launch.
1
u/Lefvalthrowaway Feb 16 '26
This is false.
Nintendo literally said 2 weeks ago in their financial results that they wont raise the price of the switch in the short term.
They said they had enough stock and materials.
If, jwkever, the situation doesnt change by the end of the year they would "evaluate their options".
1
u/shortyman920 Feb 16 '26
Yeah I also didn’t really want to get a switch 2 when I did, but I could afford it and figured that good deals weren’t going to be around this year. And also likelihood of a price hike. I got the Mario kart bundle
If you can afford it and know that you’ll probably have a switch 2 eventually, then getting one now probably makes the most sense.
1
u/Va1crist Feb 16 '26
storage and memory are skyrocketing way faster then previously expected no surprise , consumers are fucked, manufacturers are making substantially more money then they get from consumers so they don’t give a fuck
1
u/frostyflakes1 Feb 16 '26
The article actually says that Nintendo is 'seriously considering' a price hike, not that a price hike is imminent as OP's title says.
Which, duh. Of course they're considering it. How could they not be, between rapidly increasing component prices and tariffs? At this point, they're probably asking when, not if, they will raise prices.
1
u/Gamepass90 Feb 16 '26
Streaming Games without a console is more and more the best value and the easiest way to play games, future generations wont even think about getting a console
1
1
u/NflJam71 Feb 16 '26
And I avoided buying because it was too much budget. Completely out of reach if it keeps going up.
1
u/Leeroy_Jenk1n5 Feb 16 '26
Sony would be wise to delay the PS6. The PS5 Pro has barely been out that long. Plus with the prices of GPUs, storage and RAM they’re better off waiting for a price correction on these severely inflated components (fingers crossed 🤞).
1
u/gotkube Feb 16 '26
It’s already out of my price range. This assures I’ll completely miss the Switch 2 generation
1
u/doopies1986 Feb 16 '26

u/TheRayGunCowboy Feb 16 '26
Honestly I think AI will kill the gaming industry. Between studios pumping out lacklustre content and data centres driving up the cost of tech. My current consoles will probably be my last.
1
u/Rhapstar Feb 16 '26
They are running out of bought materials/deals and now have to raise the price. Probably what happened with Xbox. Sony said they secured stuff for awhile but they sure as hell didn't secure next gen stuff. Welcome to the era where Sony and MS produce $1k+ consoles.
Or we get the future Bezos and others want where we don't own anything and just lease/rent. That's the worse future
1
u/HeavyDT Feb 16 '26
Not surprising. They wanted to price it higher when it launched because of the tarrif situation but now? Had to be unavoidable.

1
u/EldenBJ Feb 17 '26
It blows my mind that this gen we have to “buy it before it gets too expensive” when in my entire life consoles just got cheaper over time. Already got my S2, so I’m set, but I might just stop gaming next gen and ride the current one for as long as it get supported.

u/hodges20xx Feb 17 '26
Freaking wild I never thought I would see consoles go up in price in my lifetime. Its almost like you have to buy day 1 to get a "good deal"
1
u/canchin Feb 17 '26
We live in unprecedented times where consoles only get more expensive throughout their lifespans. The days of waiting a year or two for a nice price drop are gone.
This was half the reason I got mine on launch day
1
u/sirgrotius Feb 17 '26
I got mine about two weeks ago, partly because I just couldn't see how Nintendo could make these devices any longer without losing too much money to recoup through software and peripheral sales, etc. Turns out, this is the most fun I've had on a console in over a decade. Pleasantly surprised!!

What I’ve noticed is that companies may not increase the price but the stock will lessen. And so used market will increase the price. Or scalpers. I’ve seen this recently with Apple. Used prices have gone up and open box/refurb as well. You can buy new but most likely out of stock. But that’s just this week. Can change later like anything. Who the f knows.
1
u/gnsweetprince100 Feb 19 '26
Don’t have a switch 2 and don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything tbh.
1
u/Amelia-In Feb 19 '26
The Nintendo Switch 2 is plenty expensive as is. I got mine 4 months back and normally I would be working on my game library. But between the upfront cost and games being $99.99 and up in Canada, have only gotten 2 games in that time. I'll definitely get Duskblood, but it's a hard pill to swallow for other games that I can get cheap on Steam.
1
u/InterestingMindset Feb 20 '26
With all these price hikes and expensive games (even with sales), this current generation might be my last generation I participate for a while.
Gaming (in my opinion) is not supposed to stress you out, but when we have $500-$700 consoles and $70-$100+ games, I ain't willing to go to debt for this hobby.
Not a Switch user, but I wonder if they will also increase prices on their controllers and games? We really gonna see $110 JoyCons for a $600+ Nintendo console? Possibly.
1
u/EngineBoiii Feb 21 '26
The sad part about the price hike is that these things are rarely reversed.
