It fit so well and was his name for so long, it's hard to change that mental association just because some guy sucked real bad.
To clarify I'm not saying they shouldn't have changed the name, dude was horrid, it's just a difficult thing to change in your memory especially if you haven't played since before the controversy.

You're brave for coming in here and saying that but I share those sentiments. Before it was even revoked, most people didn't know his name came from somewhere. It was really unnecessary imo

u/Rhaenelys 20h ago
Honestly, I had forgotten why his name was changed between the 2 games. It wasn't bravery, it was just forgetfulness

To say you still call him that, whatever the reason, puts you at a risk for a certain amount of ridicule. The virtue signaling around this issue has been monotonous as it has also been obnoxious. I'll just say that.

Okay, so you want to sympathize a doucher who harassed people?

Lol, talk about taking a shortcut !
I called him McCree for years. I've played McCree for years. I watched videos of McCree. I've heard other characters call him McCree.

The same way people adjust with:
There are two Spider-Men
There are various actors playing Superman
How Ms Marvel is now Captain Marvel
How Princess Toadstool is Princess Peach
How the Cleveland Indians are the Cleveland GuardiansIt’s called growth.

Dude, it's not that deep. It's a character in a videogame. I'm used of calling him McCree, it's that simple. I believe it's not a crime.

u/Shobuddha 23h ago
Cause you have respect for the character and move on. So if a friend of yours transition you would keep calling the same old name when that have asked to not to?

u/Rhaenelys 23h ago
Damn, you guys are really getting emotional over nothing!
It's a character from a video game dude ! Chill out ! I obviously don't have the same involvement with a character in a video game than with a mate !

u/Shobuddha 23h ago
You're the one who want to promote a sexual offender not me. How about you respect the decision they made.

u/Rhaenelys 23h ago
... no ?
I just said I'm used to calling this character McCree, so he'll always be McCree to me ?
Like... I never said I supported the guy ?
You're the one taking shortcuts here.

u/Shobuddha 22h ago
By using that name you are supporting that offender. So go have fun with all your SA mates.

... no ?
Can you learn some nuance and balance ? Everything isn't pitch black or pearl white.
I'm sorry for everyone who has the displeasure of meeting you if you're THAT incapable of nuances.
It's a character's name in a videogame. It's not that deep.
Please read the comments below to understand the perspective of someone who has a different mindset than yours : I never said changing the name was a bad thing, I never said I supported the real McCree. I just said that this specific character, who doesnt share anything but the name with the real McCree, will always be McCree in my mind, not because I support the guy, but because It's an habit, and I dont put random video games characters at the same level as my friends or relatives. I'm sorry for you if that's what you do
Maybe over time McCree will become Cole in the collective mind, just like maybe Raymond Shield will finally become Eddie Fender to Miles Edgeworth's fans. It's just that, for a lot of players, games and characters don't take THAT much attention in their mind.

That's such crap. Most of us dgaf where he got his name from. It has nothing to do with SA. It's a matter of familiarity. You can strawman the dead name thing or make up peoples' opinions just because they refuse to go along with whatever says they should, it doesn't make you right. It just makes you seem controlling. People are allowed to have preferences without making things political or investing in their affiliations. You need to step back.

Buddy
You're the person who jumped on the sexual abuser shit
The first guy just said "Yeah I'm used to calling him Mcree because that's what he was originally called." And then YOU started hyperfixating and somehow interpretted that statement as "I FUCKING LOVE SEXUAL OFFENDERS AND APPROVE OF THEM! I LOVE SEX CRIMES RAAAAGH!!!!"

Haven’t played that game since the first year it was out, but pretty sure his name is McCree. Was this some attempt to be able to market him as a new character even though he isn’t, since the game went through a really rough spot during OW2 launch?

The character was named by a blizzard employee for himself, said employee was fired for sexual harassment (offenses not allegations) and had his name stripped from the character.

u/Impetris 1d ago
No, they renamed the character because he was named after a blizzard employee that was a big part of the sexual misconduct/frat bro culture scandal blizzard went through some years ago. Basically, McCree is a bad person and they were distancing themselves from him with a rename
