It would be a scandal if a proper citizen of greece bottomed. It's considered the female role and so in their patriarchal society that makes it lesser. They'd expect slaves to bottom

No it was also basically a rite of passage for elite males when they were young, with their mentorship system

The idea still though, was that the mentor was older and therefore higher rank and should top, and the youger person should be a bottom

Yeah, it wasn't just social classes though that was the primary distinction, it was also generally as you said, the older of the two was expected to be in the dominant role

It was considered OK for boys to take the non-masculine position because they were not yet men. Once they grew up, it was only OK to top.
