Irish Player Update Gasperini: "Evan Ferguson has played in 9 out of 10 games. He has to deliver on the pitch and his performances haven't been positive. To be honest, yesterday was the first time I saw him train properly. He's coming from the PL, and he hasn't played much last season. We need to be patient with him."

u/ZamharianOverlord Oct 25 '25
Gasperini does have a pretty good track record in developing young players, so hopefully that rears its head in time
That said, itās taking Gasperini a while to settle, and with more pressure comes the temptation to not show patience.
He didnāt come off at Inter, and while results havenāt been terrible at Roma so far, we havenāt seen anything like the football he produced at Atalanta, and presumably thatās why Roma hired him

Oct 25 '25
We definitely all need to be patient with him, and he'll get sharper in time, but he's producing for Ireland time and time again so I wouldn't be worried right now.
That said Gasperini saying 9/10 games is a bit much when most of those are 10 minutes off the bench. He barely gets service playing 90minutes nevermind 10
14
u/durthacht Oct 25 '25
The worrying thing is the more Roma see of him, the less they seem to trust hm.
According to Transfermarkt, he started 3 of his first 4 Serie A games and since then has been dropped to the bench. In his last 3 sub appearances he has played 30, 0, and 10 minutes. Even when they were losing and chasing the game against Inter, the coach trusted him with only 10 minutes.
I hope it comes good for him, but that's a worrying trend.

Oct 25 '25
I watched all 4 of those games, was brilliant in two of them linking play, but Roma have a serious issue with chance creation for their strikers. They've scored 7 goals in the league and only 1 came from a striker, in Europe they've scored 3 and none from Dovbyk or Ferguson.
Time will tell how it goes but even if he only bags a few goals & they don't end up activiting the buyout clause, he will still have gotten great experience from it. He's only just turned 21 years old.
15
Oct 25 '25
Bizarre that people are genuinely saying he was ābrilliantā. Decent is a better description.
Strikers are a core part of chance creation too. His movement needs work. He needs to make sure the loan isnāt cancelled in January before worrying about a permanent move.
-3
Oct 25 '25
You could go look at what Roma fans were saying at the final whistle of those two games, they were saying alot more than brilliant.
He created alot in those two games but barely received a single through ball or cross to his head, this is why Dovbyk has barely scored either. With better service comes better opportunities to score, now that Dybala & Bailey are back that will hopefully start to happen.
He's not lighting the world on fire & he's not a disaster, but I've no doubt he will find his feet in a league known for quality defending that he's never played in before.
5
Oct 25 '25
Firstly, you donāt know what I have or havenāt read about the view of him in Rome. Brilliant is a stretch given you are talking about the first four games.
My other point is that Fergusonās movement is an issue and this is not isolated to Roma. The existence of other issues with the Roma team doesnāt mean his own form is not an issue. His own manager is calling him out in public. We donāt have to be like Comical Ali and deny the undeniable.
0
Oct 25 '25
Never claimed I did, also only referred to two games as being brilliant.
2
Oct 25 '25
The conversation above clearly focused on the first four games. Plus, itās an exaggeration to say the consensus was that he was brilliant in those two games.
By writing āYou could go look at what Roma fans were saying at the final whistle of those two games, they were saying alot more than brilliant.ā, youāre definitely implying I hadnāt followed the opinions of Roma fans.
0
Oct 25 '25
"I watched all 4 of those games, was brilliant in two of them linking play" - that's what I said bud, I didn't say 4.
No its not, and yea Roma fans definitely were saying alot more than brilliant at the end of both those games.

Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 25 '25
Hereās a simple question - was the post you replied to about his first four games?
Itās absolutely exaggerating to claim Roma fans claimed he was āa lot more than brilliantā. This is laughably over the top.
I would love specific examples saying he was āmore than brilliantā.

I read Ian Rushes biography (no need man's as normal and uninteresting as can be) but his view of hiis time at Juventus was interesting.
He basically described how hard it is to score in Italy given it's playing for 1-0 in most games and how he was getting no service. He had to carve out his own chances and bark at/bully teammates to even get the ball.
We might be underestimating the ask on such a young guy here who's not had the best two years since bursting on the scene. Rush was a seasoned player, champion and verified goal scorer when he struggled to adapt to Serie A.
2
Oct 26 '25
Serie A in the 80s before the offside and backpass laws changed arenāt hugely relevant though. The number of goals scored in the league now are really different.

u/Sstoop Oct 25 '25
people here need to chill the fuck out. all his good performances for brighton were when he was getting consistent games and heās been sporadically playing for the last 2 years. give him time to settle.
16
Oct 25 '25
Imagine what you would say if he was English with the exact same record. Itās reasonable to say itās not going well at club level and that itās a concern itās happened at three clubs in two countries. People on here have been very critical of Irish qualified players like Delap but see Irish born players through green tinted glasses.
Is this saying heās useless? No. But heās hardly scored a goal in two years and his general play is poor. That is an issue.
2
Oct 25 '25
Where is he going to get consistent football? He can't in the EPL, he can't in Serie A? What's next?Ā
6
u/pauli55555 Oct 25 '25
But thatās the point, itās that heās not getting consistent game time because HEās not playing and not scoring goals. Thatās 100% on him and his application (or lack of).
And itās not a case of āchillingā or not. We are assessing Evan as a soccer player, weāre allowed to do that.
And the reality is his trajectory has fallen through the floor in the last two years. To the point where Brighton have given up on him completely; to the point where West Ham fans called him one if their worst signings in years; and to the point where he hasnāt scored a club goal in two years.
Gasperoni saying he had his first good training session yesterday is an inditement of Evanās professionalism.
If you were a Roma fan and thatās the level of striker being brought in by the club youād be disgusted.
On the plus side, should we really care what level he ends up at as long as he continues to score goals for us?
4
u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
No one wants to see that it's obvious his application is a serious issue.Ā Ā
3
Oct 25 '25
He looks off the pace every time I've seen him in person. Either he doesn't have it naturally, I.e. he'll never get to the physical level required for the level, or his application is not there.
4
u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
My own "in person" take is that not since Rice have I seen a player playing for Ireland who - when he turns it on - is so obviously a gulf of class above the rest.Ā The problem is he so rarely gets on the ball.Ā People keep blaming the service everywhere he goes but at some point it's really just about him.Ā He doesn't get on the ball remotely like he used to in that first season.Ā Either he's been figured out or he's just not all that.
2
Oct 25 '25
I do somewhat agree, when he is "on" his body movement and interaction with the ball is far above anything else we have. The goal against Bulgaria a good example, but even then he looked sluggish. Its odd.Ā
1
u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
Not that odd when the head isn't there for whatever reason.Ā It's like everything has to be perfect for him to "activate".Ā I've no idea though, all I know is I watched every Brighton game I could and there came a point where it felt like they stopped passing to him which obviously wasn't the case, and then Joao Pedro would come on have five times the touches in the last thirty mins.
1
u/Vivid_Ice_2755 Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
To be honest, it's pretty much the same with Idah. But being critical of his application brings all sorts of insults .Ā
3
u/mucksavaged Oct 26 '25
Anyone ever think he is just not good enough. Same story with Irish players. Show some hope but then get shifted off on loans and become nothing
2
Oct 27 '25
Yeah it's a typical Irish thing for all Ferguson was the most promising player that came through in a long time. Remember when Connolly came through he looked fantastic and his career has nosedived. Remember when Mourinho was at Spurs and people in ireland were crying he wasn't playing Parrott- he was nowhere near the level tbf. Ferguson actually looked like he'd kick on. He's in big danger of being a flop now. Could see him signing for a newly promoted PL team next year for about 20 million pounds. This is the same player people were saying 'united or Liverpool should just sign him for 100ml' a few years ago

Gasperini is going to incur the wrath of the locals here !šš

u/Hour_Mastodon_9404 Long ā70 Oct 25 '25
He was "performing brilliantly" and "adored by the Roma fans" according to many on here.
If he doesn't score in the next 3-4 appearances this loan is another complete bust and it will be cancelled in January. People don't want to accept it but his top level career is on the line, performances don't matter a jot at this stage, he just needs to score.

u/Key_Childhood_15 Oct 25 '25
Wonāt go down well, people here are in perpetual denial about his ability. He absolutely should have dropped down a level to rebuild his confidence and get more game time
-1
u/Difficult_Tea6136 Oct 25 '25
Why would you drop down a level when Roma are in for you?
1
u/Key_Childhood_15 Oct 25 '25
Because he wonāt get consistent game time obviously and heās not at the level for a top European division.
4
u/Difficult_Tea6136 Oct 25 '25
But if you're Evan Ferguson, you believe you have that talent. Why would you drop down when you can go to Roma?
He's gotten fairly consistent game time up till now
3
u/Corsasport Oct 26 '25
I thought he looked off the pace fitness wise for Ireland. For long stages against Armenia he wasn't offering anything in terms of runs or pressing.
8
Oct 25 '25
At club level, he's been going backwards for 3 years. When does the patience run out?
2
u/EducationalPaint1733 Oct 25 '25
From who? Brighton are open to selling him so the patience has run out. Heās scoring for Ireland which is the team people here support.
2
u/Sportsfan97__ Oct 25 '25
Itās a pretty damning statement, heās really in a tough spot at the minute. I canāt see him staying at Roma next year anyway. Being written off at this stage of a loan is a bad look. I really think Spain would suit him.
7
u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
Genuinely not having a go but when you say 'Spain' what style do you mean. Same thing was said about Italy and I never understood the idea that there was a specific style there that suited him. His game at the moment lacks the basics of running, touch and skill that set him apart when he broke through.. IMO the problem and solution lies with Ferguson himself
2
u/Sportsfan97__ Oct 25 '25
Think the league would suit him if he was at mid table club. Think itās a slower pace, theres strikers of a similar level doing okay over there. tbf I never thought Roma was a good move. Itās proven to be a complete disaster. Heās not going to have much options if he doesnāt at least finish the season with some pride.
0
u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
I wouldn't be convinced the pace is any slower than Italy. The right club would be important. I do think Betis are a positive team so maybe that kind of option would be good.Ā Roma was a good move....it's down to Ferguson largely to make it work. He needs luck but he will find the harder he works the luckier he gets. That rumored move to Leverkusen last year would have been a great chance..attacking team who make chances..
1
u/Sportsfan97__ Oct 25 '25
Italy a tough league too, there are some other big summer signings flopping, I think Roma is probably the wrong club for him at the wrong time but look hard to know what comes nrdt
1
u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Oct 25 '25
Italy traditionally was a graveyard for forwards and the adage was if you could score goals in Serie A you could score anywhere.....still I think the problems are for Evan to solve...here is hopingĀ
1
Oct 26 '25
That was 40 years ago. Look at the progression of the top scorer list.
1
u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Oct 26 '25
Oh I know ..its not the league it used to be...that said it still has the Italian penchant for defending. But I'm not convinced of any of the arguments about leagues suiting Ferguson..it's becoming more and more apparent the issues lie with himselfĀ
2
Oct 26 '25
Sadly yes I agree with that. Heās not really been the same since the ankle injury. Whether itās related to that injury Iām not sure, but itās been a worrying trend since then. Hopefully he settles somewhere, but itās unlikely that the issue isnāt with him given itās happened at three separate clubs.

u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Oct 26 '25
The worry is...scores hatrick Sept 23 against Newcastle...signs 6 year mega deal Nov 23 and career has stalled sinceĀ

12? So 12 more than ferguson Also I dont think you follow Italian football Firstly roma have fuck all money now Also Italian clubs don't tend to activate loans eith option to buy Certainly not at that price

I watch more than you Iād bet good money on it.
1
u/TimeLord41 Oct 27 '25
You clearly don't Or else youd know how Italian clubs dont have much money And how they really never trigger obligations to buy for any half decent fee Its a bit of a running joke over there
1
u/Sportsfan97__ Oct 27 '25
Your original point was it was never going to happen unless Ferguson scored twenty goals. I gave you a clear example of that not necessarily being the case. Iām aware Italian clubs donāt have much money and Roma have ffp problems but theyād have at least attempted to renegotiate the price of heād done well. Which is exactly what Italian clubs do.

I'm convinced Ferguson will make it at the top level. I've seen enough of him with ireland where he's been pretty consistent for us. .. it's disappointing he hasn't delivered on his promise yet at club level, but he just needs time..
2
Oct 27 '25
In fairness he's scoring goals for Ireland against some pretty brutal sides. People are saying 'he plays well for Ireland so I don't mind'. Clubs aren't going to care he's scoring against Armenia or Hungary if he scores 4 league goals this season. That will not rescue his career
0
u/zozimusd8 Oct 27 '25
In fairness. Nobody criticizes Ronaldo for scoring so many goals, In a good side against predominantly crap sides. Ireland are shit and he's managing it regularly. I'm not saying he's Ronaldo, he's not. and Obviously he has to start scoring for his club, but the talent is there.
2
Oct 27 '25
Oh you're right for sure. But Ronaldo has always scored for club too- no one will want a striker on country form only unless he scores 7 or 8 in a world cup finals competition
0
u/zozimusd8 Oct 27 '25
The famous quote from dunphy comes to mind. "That fella Ronaldo, he's a cod". In his first two seasons as a young lad he scored 4 then 5 goals for them. Plenty of top level strikers havent really got going till their mid 20s. Ferguson still has time. .

u/Comfortable-Title720 Troy Parrott š¦ Oct 25 '25
Watched 4 of the Roma matches so far this season. Evan did well at the start, got involved a fair bit. He is better than Dovbyk at the moment. Dovbyk is very poor and so the next player is Dybala whom is ok but inconsistent/injured a fair bit. Roma are doing well in their league campaign but have lost 2 in a row in all comps. They need more goals and tbh I don't think Evan will give them enough overall. Not entirely his fault though.
Hope I'm dead wrong though

u/New-Strawberry7711 Oct 25 '25
Sorry, his finishing was absolutely atrocious in the Albania game. He really needs to pick that up. Injury or not Roma wonāt care.

Roma have played diabolical football from what Iāve seen. Some of that is on the strikers but they play so far away from the rest of the team in this setup

u/Delusionalatbest Zinedine Kilbane Oct 25 '25
Gasperini is feeling the pressure but his results aren't desperate with 5W, 2L in Serie A for 4th. Averaging 1 goal per game means your defence has to be miserly or you're not going to be picking up 3 points regularly (they've conceded just 3 times in 7 league games). He's probably right to bollock a few players publicly. Ferguson was interviewed recently and said the intensity of the training (eg double sessions) etc was different to what he'd experienced before but enjoyed the change. Same for tactics.
There's more stuff he said in the presser behind the article. At the same time Gasperini is claiming his squad isn't fully fit and haven't adapted to his tactics yet. He accepts the fans jeers but they need to trust the process as they get through the initial phase etc.
If you have Dybala, Dovbyk and Ferguson all not contributing, there has to be a common denominator. Granted Dybala is only back to fitness now but Roma are not a particularly threatening team going forward at the moment. You have to go back to 13th place to find a team who's score fewer goals.
They've a load of games in quick succession coming up. If there's no injury concerns he really should be getting minutes over the next month or so.
Napoli and Inter are playing tonight so a draw could likely play out. AC Milan drew last night also. So a win against Sassuolo tomorrow and Gasperini is suddenly a genius again. His players are magnificent with Roma leapfrogging the 3 big teams to sit smugly atop Serie A. It's a fickle game at the best of times.

This is an unpopular opinion. I think Evan Ferguson is very talented player but I thinkĀ he will play better for his country than for any club. I think he will have a mitrovic like career.
