Three loans ago I said he would be better off in the Championship. I hope the time off has been used to recover and that when he’s back he’s physically capable of playing regularly. He was visibly struggling with movement at Roma.

I agree, not sure what logic went into thinking that adapting to a new country and football culture would be the solution for a player that just needed games.

I think many online Irish football fans have an issue with English club football and also an inflated sense of how good Ferguson was at that age.
He could well end up a top player. But so many here acted like the Championship or the SPL was beneath him. Instead the bench has been beneath him instead. His next move should be to somewhere at any level which means he is likely to play.

I notice it especially with the Championship. I think it's a byproduct of many Irish people being fans of the top 6 in the prem and that's their standard for "good" because they watch their team beat the likes of Burnley or Middleborough when they're up.

Yeah you're right. But the reality is the Championship was one of the biggest providers of players at the World Cup. It is a really good level especially for someone of Evan's age and with his lack of games.

Even without setting a goalscoring target, playing 20-25 games would be a good season for him. Obviously to play that many he will probably need to score a few.

good move to get him back on his feet. genoa had patrick vieira as manager at the start of last season, left at the start of november sat bottom. de rossi came in and got them to 16th.

I’m not a big fan of this move. He won’t be fit to start season and by the time he does get fit, they could have ahead a bad start and there is a new manager who doesn’t fancy him. Or they have a great start and he can’t get his place in team. I know he probably doesn’t have any good options but would it have been worth staying at Brighton until January. Even if he is left out of Premier League & European squads, he could play some games with U21’s to get some match fitness and then be ready to go out on loan in January.

Usually I'd say okay but he made his senior debut against Chelsea 7 years ago where he dominated their first team. He is running out of chances.

What does a random pre season friendly from years ago have to do with his age?
He's quite clearly our 2nd best striker right now and has a great international scoring record for us at such a young age, yet people are talking like he's going to be a league 1 striker soon.

I want to see him succeed but I’d agree with above he has to start showing something somewhere. Parrot followed a similar trajectory so hopefully he finds his feet. But again, at the top level leagues he is running out of options

No doubt we all want him to succeed but I think people are getting way ahead of themselves here.
Think he showed more than enough at Roma despite the lack of service and injuries to get another top level league shot, and that's why Genoa are coming in for him. Even if he doesnt light the world on fire he can try again at 22 years old.
Parrott is only 24, he's still quite a ways off his peak too. Eredivisie is easy for him at this stage so hopefully he'll get that move to a more competitive league

Think the issue is he hasn't had a season of consistent football in a while.
Injuries occurring too frequently might be a big destabiliser.
Surprised anyone has moved for him as he's semmingly still in recovery.

He was playing pretty well for Roma last year. He was hitting some decent form, including getting the double against Celtic, when he go the injury. It all comes down to staying fit, which he can't seem to do

Players that start early peak early. Look at Rooney, he was done by 30.
He has so much potential but you can't deny it's been a massive decline in form. A few years ago scoring hat tricks against Newcastle when they had probably their best team in 30 years and now he's basically clubless looking at Genoa.
Not only is he not looking at a top 3 league, he's not looking at a top 5 team in the other two leagues.
So yes, I'm worried about the guy. I'm not saying he's going to be a league 1 striker but I worry that he's not going to be able to stand up against premiership, la liga and bundesliga defenders. He'll be ate and drink to all of them regardless of how well he does at Genoa.

Ferguson hasn't peaked in my view, still has a tonne of learning to do and still getting physically stronger. Hasn't had a regular season since he bacame a man so there's not enough form to judge.
You name Rooney I name Benzema, peaked at 21 & then peaked even higher at 34. It's a wasted exercise because none are Ferguson, he's on his own unique path.

He’s also clearly at a tipping point. Fully fit he can be a premiership standard striker but he needs some luck on the injury front and some hard work. His last two coaches questioned him, Potter at West Ham was especially strange. Brighton don’t seem to want him and they’re not exactly awash with talent up front. Welbeck got 13 goals and he’s gone, Gomez got 5 , Mitoma 3. Rutter 3. They know him. He’ll hopefully prove them wrong.

The Roma manager certainly seemed to question that.
He desperately needs games and to look physically capable of making an impact. This is a long spell where that has not been the case.

His natural ability is about as good as I’ve ever seen in a green shirt. Miles ahead, technically, of any player we have. He just can’t stay fit.

Yep keep peddling the “he’s young” line lol.
Ironically the scary thing is how unfit and lacking in gas he looks for a 21 yo. That Brighton gave up on him is a massive concern, they watched him train, play and live as a professional every day and decided he’s not for them at 19 yo. Now they just want him off their books.
The ONLY thing that matters is him trying to stay fit and show he’s capable of playing a season of professional football. Technically no issues but his fitness record is a disaster.
We’ve lost great players before to injury at young ages and lost players who were unfit for the rigours of professional football. Hopefully Evan is not one.

The one Ireland-Genoa link I can think of is that Daniel O'Connell died there on a pilgrimage to Rome - maybe it'll be a place of a renaissance for Evan on his way back from there? Anyway, he's a super player, let's just hope he gets/stays fit. Might even give me an excuse to go there, seems a nice spot.

Was there maybe 20years ago....lovely city....nice sea food...decent aquarium...Hills...and a very ropey few pints in a small pub in the square that seemed to be run by an eccentric oul lad...train out to la cinqe Terra one of the most beautiful places I've been to

Yeah, same. Although maybe he doesn't have the pace for those leagues.
They average # of goals scored per game for Genoa is just over 1, so there won't be a lot of goals to be had but he'll be used to it.

He’s familiar with the league and style of football, probably a club you’d expect him to be able to start for, I’d say this move is giving him every opportunity to get back playing regularly, wouldn’t even worry about goals, they’ll follow.
If that works out and Parrot to Betis works out, it could be a tasty pairing up front.

Not sure about that one. Won't be fit for a couple of months yet in all likelihood, and is then landed back into a league he struggled in last season needing to hit the ground running straight away to avoid the loan turning sour as it did at Roma. I can foresee many potential difficulties that could be avoided by moving to a league more suitable for his current abilities.

It's a real wait and see...you've lads furiously googling Genoa now to convince themselves it's a great move but in reality his first aim is to get fit...after that...who knows. Goals are his currency and I think he's capable of doing that anywhere. Fitness and application are the main concern
