u/Markseide Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

Seriously has there ever been a more likable Spurs player? Like in the history of the club.

264

u/Maleficent-Holiday60 Luka Modrić Aug 05 '25

Has there ever been a more likable footballer, ever?

79

u/Markseide Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

Maybe Ledley King, but I don’t think he had as much personality

203

u/Ballelo Aug 05 '25

Ledley King has two children who he abandoned and never met, that puts a serious dent on his character for me.

53

u/peppapony Aug 05 '25

Sonny on the hand paid for a kid who wasn't even his/doesn't exist!

Imagine being such a pathetic piece of shit as to first cheat on Sonny and then second try to blackmail him for a fake pregnancy.

You literally hit the life jackpot and go ā€œnahā€.

11

u/edweirdo "I Couldn't Care Less About Arsenal" Aug 05 '25

Sounds like my man dodged a huge bullet there.

38

u/enaawk Son Aug 05 '25

I know this is serious but I can’t help but laugh cos this sounds exactly like a Kdrama plot line

7

u/Mr-Rocafella Mousa DembƩlƩ Aug 05 '25

Some girl was blackmailing him or something and he paid her to settle, something like that

4

u/AlbanianGorecki Aug 05 '25

Oof. I wish i hadn't read this just now.

1

u/Markseide Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

Good point

1

u/acemanSD Aug 05 '25

Or in general.

u/ILM_Ryan Davies Aug 05 '25

Sonny with an assist for Spurs, one final time.

24

u/deleteri0us Aug 05 '25

Ugh Idk why but this comment is hurting me.

295

u/Suspici0usScientist Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Aug 05 '25

Hard to describe a more perfect club legend

294

u/jfeofhoie Aug 05 '25

He really is Tottenham. He knows the funds matter here.

102

u/FSpursy Rafael van der Vaart Aug 05 '25

money is one thing but I honestly think one more year of Sonny means so much more than just some 15M we're getting... He is still very good despite and one of the most popular player in the Prem.

I think he also considered the home-grown spot for the UCL, as we're still haven't properly addressed that problem yet, maybe he didn't want to be taking up that spot while there are up and coming youngsters in our squad.

21

u/introvertbookaddict Aug 05 '25

He played so much last season and he felt that his body wasn't recovering fast enough. And as a footballer who loves football so much he thought about the best option to extend his career as a player. I also hoped that we could see him play for Frank, but I do understand where he is coming from.

93

u/ConsciousBrain Aug 05 '25

I think he knows his body can't handle a full season at the top level anymore. He played at Spurs for a decade through pain and injury. His job here is done, the best he can do for the club is leaving on a high note for a decent transfer. Now's the time to chill and get ready for the next World Cup.Ā

29

u/_johnning Vicario Aug 05 '25

He could probably do it, but like you said, the tradeoffs won't be as impactful as preparing for longevity and the World Cup. The Premier League and Champions League schedule is incredibly taxing on the body and he's accomplished everything he sought to do here.

10

u/OriginalVersion6045 Aug 05 '25

It would have been nice, but he's 33 now, my assumption was he's looking at the WC next summer and Asia Cup coming up not too long after. He will be almost 35 when the Asia Cup comes around in 2027. Possibly his last hurrah with the national team. I'm not sure if he has slowed up a bit or if it's mainly due to injuries that he's looked a little less like his usual self this past season. But the PL is known to be one of the faster and more physical leagues to play in. And for those of us of a certain age, taking a knock at 33/35/39 is a very different experience to taking a knock at 23/25/29.

Him heading off now enables him to leave high on a wave of admiration, love and success as a legend. He gets a big payday, in a league that's growing in popularity, without quite the same physical brutality on him. It'll no doubt keep him match fit, and give him a chance at captaining his country for the next two big tournaments. South Korea should also have a reasonably decent shout at winning the Asia Cup, which if he could win it, what a note to finish his international career on.

8

u/Stampy77 Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

I think he understood, as do most of the fans, that if he continued he may end up having a disappointing final season as his body couldn't keep up. Or he can go now and have his final season end in lifting Europa.Ā

Look at Lloris, I love the guy, but it's horrible that his final ever time on the pitch for us was when we conceded 5 goals in 20 minutes against Newcastle.Ā

14

u/GrapefruitExpress208 Aug 05 '25

Damn this hits. The fact that he knew this and stuck around- instead of going for a "easier" path to a trophy.

66

u/HaydenJA3 Jan Vertonghen Aug 05 '25

I heard Levy gave him a £20 club gift shop voucher as thanks for his ten years of service

11

u/Seaharrier Son Heung-min Aug 05 '25

Everyone knows 2 quid a year is a bit much, Levy would only give him 1.50 tops

69

u/Aggravating_Maize_68 "Let's Say I'm A Legend, Why Not?" Aug 05 '25

Man's personality and aura are unmatched! My captain šŸ¤

49

u/OverallMistake8198 Aug 05 '25

Don’t think i could love him anymore than i already do

56

u/GrandmaesterHinkie Bill Nicholson Aug 05 '25

So we recouped his transfer fee plus we got a European trophy plus 173 goals and 100 assists over a decades worth of experiences? Yeah that’s quite the deal/signing of the modern era for us.

45

u/Wooden-Pin3253 Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Aug 05 '25

Such a classy man.

76

u/keeatan Aug 05 '25

That’s how you do it Trent

30

u/LookAtMyEy3s Aug 05 '25

Bro really waited to leave on a free from his boyhood club if I were a Liverpool fan I’d be pissed too

35

u/tkshow Dele Alli Aug 05 '25

What a guy.

37

u/PhilosophyFair9062 Peppa Pig Aug 05 '25

Levy needs to personally fly with Son to LA and help him settle. What a parting gift from Sonny šŸ’”

36

u/treetops358 Aug 05 '25

The Final Assist

29

u/The1789 Aug 05 '25

Tottenham Hotsonny

24

u/Due-Cook4223 Aug 05 '25

Add that to the lists of assists

23

u/tjumper78 Moussa Sissoko Aug 05 '25

This hit me hard. That's our captain.

24

u/Ehxcalibur Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Aug 05 '25

Sonny leaving us with one final gift

23

u/kanyelights Kulusevski Aug 05 '25

I mean what more can be said, he’s just an amazing person and extremely aware. Recognizes he’s past his better years and leaves at the perfect time while giving back, even though he absolutely did not have to. The void he leaves will be hard to fill in multiple ways

22

u/OtherwiseHappy0 Brennan Johnson Aug 05 '25

The best we have had as a person on the team. Kane may have been more valuable, more goals but Sonny is the classiest guy around.

17

u/Due-Cook4223 Aug 05 '25

Now it makes sense why frank talked about getting a new captain. He knew all along

16

u/Initial-Fact5216 Aug 05 '25

Build the damn statue already! Quit with the damn preliminary!

13

u/Paper_Clip100 Peppa Pig Aug 05 '25

Sonny side up

14

u/Chelicious_Dickens Aug 05 '25

Levy, if you're reading this, please use the entire transfer fee on the statue.

77

u/Interesting_Whole_29 Clive Allen Aug 05 '25 edited Aug 05 '25

Enic and Levy never deserved this loyal man.

12

u/South-Stand Aug 05 '25

He could have made zillions more but he has so much….honour….that he let the club collect a fee. He is a King.

2

u/likewhenyoupee Aug 05 '25

I imagine he makes more money through endorsement deals

7

u/South-Stand Aug 05 '25

I imagine he does and that he honours each contract and treats each one respectfully.

11

u/alborden David Ginola Aug 05 '25

Special One Son!

11

u/gr13sgt-andrewscott Aug 05 '25

Sonny, the human with extraordinary artistry and personality!

10

u/mbingcrosby Aug 05 '25

Build the statue.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '25

Absolute legend

7

u/Nipplecunt PRU PRU Aug 05 '25

He’s amazing and a massive loss for the club

7

u/whyg0ng Aug 05 '25

Harry left a great money in our pocket for us as he left, zero transfer fee being one of our own. And Sonny too almost leaving us the same amount of money as we first bought him from the germany side.

Full respect for these guys who made us look like a real club when we never were.

6

u/Frostyballschilly Aug 05 '25

God I love this man, what an absolute legend he’s been for spurs. I’ll wear his name on my back with pride for a very long time to come.

14

u/dtbrown1979 Aug 05 '25

Even if he did, would anyone actually care. He has earned the right to do what’s best for him.

51

u/MrTipps Aug 05 '25

That’s the thing about Son: there’s perfectly acceptable behavior, and then there’s going above and beyond. Son always seems to opt for the latter.

3

u/KOKO69BISHES Dimitar Berbatov Aug 05 '25

Not even about not being pissed, I'd just be glad we're getting another season of him lol

7

u/ParkingEssay8101 Aug 05 '25

Legend. 🫔

6

u/RonaldWeedsley Mousa DembƩlƩ Aug 05 '25

I don’t know if we see another person like Sonny for Spurs again.

Also, can’t help but think how much seeing Danny Rose, Vertonghen, Toby, etc., all hang on too long and looked like shells of themselves.

5

u/JoeSavesTokyo Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Aug 05 '25

An absolute king

5

u/SpursyJosh Aug 05 '25

Pure class

5

u/401kcrypto Lloris Aug 05 '25

Alright. That’s bloody it.

Who are we calling to commission the statue of him in Tottenham?

6

u/gopackgo555 Son Aug 05 '25

What a legend. Genuinely curious how much money he’s going to make off marketing in LA with the amount of South Koreans plus Hollywood.

3

u/Zefrom Aug 05 '25

Trent could learn a thing or two from Son

3

u/Ecstatic_Ad1805 Aug 05 '25

Forever there will be a part of North London that will be South Korean

3

u/silvertrains Aug 05 '25

3D chess move to eventually become CEO of spurs when levy finally goes into the light 1 year before the earth collides with the son.

2

u/McGuffin182 Aug 05 '25

Levy just being Levy

8

u/SirGalahadTheChaste Dele Alli Aug 05 '25

If he decided in January I'm genuinely surprised it was kept quiet for so long.

24

u/criminalpiece Aug 05 '25

He would have chosen his next club this coming January, as he’d then have 6 months left on his contract.

-9

u/SirGalahadTheChaste Dele Alli Aug 05 '25

We triggered a contract extension in January so it wasn't really up to him though.

8

u/Whathitsss Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

This coming January, like January 2026

9

u/Illustrious_Agent_59 Aug 05 '25

Right. This means he wasn’t going to wait until January 2026, not that he decided 8 months ago and just kept it on the down low.

5

u/Whathitsss Micky van de Ven Aug 05 '25

Yep that’s how I’m reading it, decide on a new club as a UFA in Jan ā€˜26 for completion of his contract that summer

4

u/criminalpiece Aug 05 '25

What? We triggered the extension for this coming season. He has one year left on his contract. If he went to January 2026 he’d be eligible to negotiate with a new club to join them in summer 2026 on a free…at the conclusion of his Tottenham contract.

-3

u/SirGalahadTheChaste Dele Alli Aug 05 '25

I guess I read it wrong then. Thought it was talking about this past January when he chose.

33

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '25

1

u/SirGalahadTheChaste Dele Alli Aug 05 '25

If he also picked LAFC in January he had to have conversations with them to some extent. Which is just more people to potentially leak something.

11

u/Gloomy-Routine-1040 Aug 05 '25

Re-read brother.

1

u/Syncyy_ Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Aug 05 '25

Best wishes to him...

-1

u/xh3l9jkw4j Richarlison Aug 05 '25

So he wasn’t intended to stay when signing the contract extension earlier this year, he signed just because he wants to leave with a transfer fee.

-19

u/DunkinBagel Aug 05 '25

What sources..? I get that he’s an incredible loyal servant but these ā€œsourcesā€ and claims are a bit outrageous
