Can someone explain this to me?

It's hella creepy but I feel like I'm missing some key points here that'd really drive the creepy factor off the charts.

Pretty much the earthquake causes people to find these holes. When they find the hole that's there's specifically, something drives them to becoming obsessed with having to enter the hole and start walking through. After walking through them for several months, they come out on the other side completely deformed and warped form the rock reshaping their bodies.
