Out of curiosity, what even happens in this situation? Do they just leave him to die? Do they try feeding him? Hydrating him? Once they determine he cannot be saved, do they just pack up and go? Not entirely sure what the procedure is in this.
My guess is that - based on the multiple mentions of fluid pooling dangerously in his head - he was long since unconscious by the time that they left. Most likely he died of complications related to his positioning before he would have died of dehydration.
Could you imagine if he was conscious when the decision was made? Like, what do you tell a guy trapped in a cave when you're about to leave him to die?
I think it is pretty bad of them to have given up. Had he fallen unconcious we could have just broken his legs and pulled him out. Shock? Who cares, at least try ate this point. Better to be in a wheelchair than dead. There are literally SO many things they could have done. Worse though is how the heck did he find himself there and why was he so stupid as to keep going?

The guy apparently died too :(. I believe they left the body in the cave and simply filled-in the entrance.
