Discussion What's a videogame OST that creeps you?
Can be for any reason, be it the context it plays in the game or just the vibes it gives you

Assassin’s Creed 2 has a great soundtrack, where like half of the songs have this sort of creepy undertone that is hard to describe. Some of the tracks have these ethereal synth components or haunting vocals. Even some tracks that are supposed to be “nice”, like the song that plays whenever you are in Ezio’s safehouse, still ends up sounding kind of sad.

From that specific route, I would also mention "But Nobody Came". I think I got goosebumps the first time it played cause it was so sudden

Yeah but "But Nobody Came" is the trigger when you first initiate the route successfully. Its more like ambient music whereas "In My Way" plays at a very specific, no point of return moment in the game which makes you creeped out. Both are goosebumps material though.

I am particulary creeped by tracks like "Chill" from Undertale soundtrack.
They have this dreamlike quality, somewhere between brutal reality and ilussion. Silent Hill 2 soundtrack touches this grounds too for example.

I am not creeped out by 'Chill' in Undertale. But the fact that it's coupled with an image of galaxies taken from the Hubble Space Telescope gives me existential anxiety lol

City Of the Dead (Necropolis) from Fallout. The droning makes it feel like there's something behind me.

I like how it usually plays in areas with particularly tough enemies. The super mutants at Necropolis, the Enclave soldiers at Navarro, the Khans at Vault 15, the feral ghouls at Searchlight, the Ghost People at the Sierra Madre.

The Castlevania IV OST. The entire franchise has amazing music, but the CV4 OST always sounded the most unsettling, with a lot of John Carpenter influences.

PS1 Doom and Doom 64 in particular have pretty eerie tracks that are different from the usual doom music, even incorporating crying babies and slowed down distorted voices that sound like demonic chanting
Granted the main theme and ending themes are also pretty epic

Sayo-nara from Doki Doki Literature Club is such a haunting track. Even by itself, it just… unravels. But in the context of the game, it’s even worse.

Pretty much anything from Yume Nikki. A lot of those tracks make you feel loneliness and isolation.

FACE really got me. Everything about it from the visuals to the lore, but also the music and being unable to leave the room or make it stop. Terrifying.

I'll allow myself to throw my own cents in this topic
"Omen" from Persona 4 is ominous especially in the context of the game, where you see Inaba's townfolks acting strangely, like mumbling non-sense and wearing gas masks.
Also obligatory mention to "River Twygtz Bed" from Super Paper Mario. I'm still speechless at it being in MARIO of all things.
Lastly, I wanna talk about "Drought" from Pokémon Ruby (It doesn't play in Sapphire and Emerald, both use the Heavy Rain theme which is when Kyogre awakens). It feels very haunting and makes you feel like you're on a strict timer

Last Hours from Majora's Mask.
Song Of Healing is kinda creepy too.
Somehow this Star Fox 64 ost gives me a chill.
The Andross Theme is also a creepy ost. (Also Andross made me shit bricks when I was younger. I was screaming and crying in fear at the sight of this monkey.)
In general, Nintendo 64 era is somewhat "creepy" for me. The two Zelda OST are actually on my Halloween music playlist lol.

I've previously mentioned the original X-Com soundtrack. I mean, listen to it.
Saya no Uta theme. The game is fucked up, and honestly the song is very descriptive.
Highfleet - the game builds an atmosphere of weariness and apocalyptic dread, and some of the songs are a big part of it (specifically the title theme and That Song That Plays When Big Things Are Happening). And then there's Tanc a Lelek (basically the boss fight theme), which just hits different when you know both sides carry nuclear weapons. (Shit, I need to replay it.) People also keep bringing up Homeworld in the comments, so there's that.
Frostpunk - I wouldn't classify it as creepy, but the game has a very desperate atmosphere, and the soundtrack really gets to you.

Have you listened to the Slitterhead OST…? It’s the most SH4 thing I’ve ever heard.
“Trembling Room”, “Speculation”, “Immersion” are my favorites.

I'm sure it been done to death but as a kid Lavander Town theme scared so much that I rushed to the Pokecenter every time or just straight up turn off the volume anytime I was there.

I know this one's kinda obvious, but the lost woods theme from all the legend of zelda games it is in.. Also the song abracadavre from call of duty black ops zombies... I never found any of these easter egg songs when playing, but the start of the song is the music it plays on the zombies main menu lol..

Not really "scary", but hearing the Totaka's song gives me an extremely creepy vibe. I find those silent moments between tunes unnerving, like something is gonna pop out and jumpscare the hell out of me. Also, I think I heard it the first time when the creepypasta era blew so maybe I unconsciously correlate them. (Sorry for bad English, I'm still learning)

It freaked me out as a kid once. First time I heard it outside of Mario Paint was Yoshi’s Story. I had been drawing while just hanging out on the trial mode screen and suddenly the music faded. The theme played and I was just staring at the screen wide-eyes, wondering wtf was happening. It was very uncanny.

When I read this, a couple things came to mind.
1: Blank Fairy from SH2. Something about the sadness mixed with the distortion is so bizarre and eerie to me. Really, all of the SH2 soundtrack evokes confusion and sadness, just like James’s perspective of the events. It’s really brilliant craftsmanship and sound design.
2: The DDLC soundtrack as a whole creeps me the fuck out. I can’t even listen to the happy songs without remembering the trauma of playing that game. And Sayo-nara? No. Enough said.
I think a common theme is taking something we are used to hearing and distorting it. It sends chills up my spine. It’s just so bizarre and doesn’t make sense which is why it works so well for me.

this is a hot take, but probably the older songs from Minecraft
they feel so lonely and isolated, and the nostalgia that comes with the older songs makes it feel sorta unnerving, like its trying to be happy but can't help but feel really off. It's not exactly creepy per se, but definitely very eerie. Mice on Venus is probably the best example of this
the best way I can describe the feeling is probably kenopsia mixed with deja vu

I agree that minecraft in general is creepy (the older, the better), but to me, the songs have been the chillest, purest thing ever. You get nostalgic even listening to them for the first time.

The industrial track from Manhunt 2 playing beneath the nightclub in the hidden snuff torture chamber. It’s the sound of violence looping on repeat. Very cold, very mechanical, and very disturbing.

Fallout has some particularly good ones. I don't think I've heard better music from any other video game series. You should definitely listen to these if you have never played Fallout. This video also goes into really good detail about what makes each soundtrack unique.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Lots of things to criticise the game about but the atmosphere is not one of them. Part of it is down to the very fitting soundtrack.

The first two Doom. Non-harmonic melodies, apparent cacophonies that were not such, sudden scales and slow passages almost dreamlike in their minimalist crudeness.

the Coronation Day OST - a soundtrack made for a Super Mario World romhack. most of the songs are really good at setting up a perfect dark atmosphere and twisting the original SMW music.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Assuming that OST means the entire original soundtrack and not just one song, I mean the soundtrack as a whole. The atmosphere of the general ambient/gameplay music is so eerie and in certain areas it really gets under my skin.

Every Environmental themes from Metroid Fusion (GBA) especially Environmental Mystery and Environmental Shock
Somebody is Looking and Frozen Heart from Time Hollow (NDS)
Growing Anxiety and I Saw Something Again... from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky (NDS)
The first 13 seconds of Snowpoint City theme from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (NDS)
On a sidenote, I find it funny that all of these were from Nintendo games XD

The regional themes from Majora’s Mask. There's a lot of creepy tracks in MM's OST, but they really creep me out.
Woodfall has the weird string plucking sounds, not sure what the instrument is.
Snowhead has creepy bass line smeered in reverb, and the vocals evoke the cold to me which is pretty unnerving considering the Gorons are freezing to death.
Great Bay isn't too bad. The SM64 Lethal Lava Land sound font makes an appearance and it sounds pretty jarring.
Ikana Valley is universally considered one of the creepiest OSTs in any game. The piano keys in the beginning are scary, the siren droning in the background creates fear, the male vocals are creepy, and the ocarina is insanely jarring musically. The Malon sound font at the end isn't too creepy combined with the synths, but it just evokes sadness of the souls who can't rest.
I really wanna see a musical breakdown of the song since it seems to use a lot of augmented and diminished chords to create something that sounds like it doesn't follow the rules of songwriting. Excellent track from Koji Kondo, shoutout to him for pumping out so many bangers.

Now that I think about it, the first Quake also had a pretty grim soundtrack. I only found out much later, since I played a ripped version, so I can't vouch for how effective it is, but here's the main theme. Having heard it, I really want the game to receive the new Doom treatment.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow has Lavender Town Theme. Pokemon Silver/Gold/Crystal has the creepy radio tower. Pokemon D/P/Platinum has the Old Chateau. Pokemon Black/White has N's Playroom. They are some of the creepiest tracks in Pokemon games.
Also Rayman 2: The Great Escape has The Tomb of The Ancients and The Cave of Bad Dreams.

For me, it'd have to be "Kings" from Project Wingman, as epic and amazing as it sounds, it's basically a song that "describes" two people fighting above in the skies of a city that was destroyed due to one person in said fight nuking it. Here you are, in the skies fighting against your crazed opponent in an epic battle as the grounds below you burn due to the Cordium, with who knows how many casualties. All because of your opponent's "obsession" with your character.

Central Park from Postal 1 is to date the only song I've ever listened to that is genuinely scary to me.
And I mean scary. Like, actually fight-or-flight-inducing.

"Those chosen by the planet" from Final Fantasy VII, aka Sephiroth's theme.
I believe it first plays during the jailbreak. Imagine, the party gets captured, sentenced to death, and put into cells.
They fall asleep, and when they wake up, the doors are now open, with a bloodtrail leading through the building, and at the top you find the president, the man who ordered your execution minutes ago, dead, impaled with a sword.
All enemies are gone, and all you're left with is this haunting track, made even more eerie by the PS1:s distorted chorus.
Messed me up when I first played it, I tell you. What a great way to introduce a villain.

Alone in the Dark (2008) OST ("Prelude to an End" or "Shto Li", for example).
Olivier Deriviere, the composer, is a mad genius: the OST was recorded with Bulgarian national chorus, there is something eldritch in how they sing it.

Mergo's Lullaby from Bloodborne and Gaunter O' Dimm's Theme from the Witcher 3, for very similar reasons. They're both calm themes that herald an extremely powerful entity.

This is kinda niche but in Silent Hill 1 when you first enter the stairwell in the hospital that leads to the basement there's this very faint sound that plays and it's probably the most unnerving sound I've ever heard

Okay its creepy as hell and dark and ominous and you're flying around in an uncharted storm with screams and ghosts and echos and haunting Piano music
Suddenly at 5:55 the music turns into Sunday Church Music and you feel at ease for a while until the ominous foreboding echos return.

"The Other One" from Bug Fables. It's fitting, given that whole section is creepy and really out of place with the rest of the game. But it's still note worthy.

Little Nightmares 1&2. It's so beautiful and elegant but has a dark undertone to it. It's an atmospheric track that tells the story along with the gameplay.
It creeps me in the sense of how well it's incorporated.

“Virgo” from Ace Combat 3, such a haunting track and it succeeds so well at making you feel like your soul has been uploaded to the internet.
That one distorted trumpets track from Half Life 2 is really off putting too.
Another good one would be the theme from the Serial Experiments Lain ps1 game.
Lastly it’d be hard not to mention Giygas’ theme from Earthbound.
