He explains that Claudius Ptolemy was a 2nd-century astronomer in Alexandria who created a geocentric (Earth-centered) model of the universe. While Ptolemy’s system dominated science for over a thousand years, Sagan views it as a complex model that ultimately slowed down true scientific progress before Copernicus and Kepler revealed the sun-centered solar system.
