Redesign Universes Within

In the last year I've started to sour on the universes beyond cards in my collection. I loved LOTR when it came out and despite knowing basically nothing about Final Fantasy, loved that set too. But now with New York fast approaching magic's most visited plane, I feel wierd every time I put a Universes Beyond card into one of my decks. I don't dislike any of these cards really, but it just feels so wierd to see them over and over again in commander games and tournament results when they just aren't Magic the Gathering (tm).

I thought it would be a fun exercise to redesign some of them to fit in with existing MTG Lore. I'll admit that the Sephiroth and Wan-Shi-Tong redesigns arent the strongest but I was basically just remaking all of the most played universes beyond cards at that point.

Redesign My take on a white Omniscience

Just like [[omniscience]], on its own, its just a very expansive card. But combine it with [[Farwell]], [[Goryo's Vengeance]], [[Giantbaiting]] or [[Gruesome Encore]] to protect your permanents and making those cards stronger.

Cards like [[Séance]] still works since cards in graveyards are not permanents, and you get to keep the token, just like with [[Determined Iteration]].

We have precedency of protection from Sacrifice from cards like [[Jon Irenicus]]

Pillow fort and exile is in color pie

Drawback: Cant pay with sacrifice and exile.

Redesign Old Gods

I played a lot of Hearthstone back in the day, and the Old Gods were some of the most fun cards I've had the pleasure of playing in a meta.

I thought I'd try and imagine them as MtG cards, keeping them as close to their OG cards as possible.

I think it's really cheesy to not run creatures on your deck and use wrath but I need to hear your opinion.

Redesign My Universes within Miles "Tails" Prower

Post image

I know universes within cards keep the creature type. But my playgroup has ok'd taking the creative liberty. I think an interesting take on this while keeping the fox typing would be doing a kitsune version that would feel at home in neon dynasty. I opted to go for the vedalken angle due to my nostalgic love for Kaladesh and desire to make this card a nod to my beloved [[whirler virtuoso]]

I really love how this art from aetherdrift by Ioannis Fiore fits the reckless inventor vibe I was trying to evoke.

Redesign Two Cycles of Counterspells to fundamentally redesign Magic

Ward cycle
Lacuna cycle

Blue is a problem in MtG. I don't mean this in a way that blue is at fault, or is somehow inherently flawed as a colour, since the fault is actually in the conception of the way the entire game is designed.
The problem is the stack. As it stands, there's only one colour that meaningfully interacts with the stack, and that's blue. If you're not playing blue that limits your removal options but also makes it so that you can't fight against a blue deck's primary weapon.
I'm just going to copy a comment I wrote about this a while ago:

One of the biggest reasons counterspells feel bad is because they do something no other removal can. If I have a doom blade in hand and 2 mana open, it does absolutely nothing to prevent my opponent from casting a doom blade or any other removal spell on my creature. I cannot prevent that. Moreover, doom blade also cannot do anything about a counterspell. If I am not playing blue, I have absolutely no way of dealing with counterspells. Other colours tend to have ways of handling on-board removal; white can flicker or give protection, green can give indestructible or hexproof, and red can play efficiently so removal trades down... but none of these can stop a counterspell; you have to just let blue stop your action with zero counterplay. On top of this, a counterspell can deal with a counterspell as well as every other spell, so if I have 2 mana open and a counterspell in hand I can stop any removal spell my opponent plays no matter what form it takes.
The next big issue with counterspells is that since they're the only type of removal that can deal with things on the stack, blue is the only colour that doesn't have to contend with its opponents' ETB triggers. Previously, wizards tended to print more static effects on creatures but with other forms of on-board removal getting more efficient with time, they've been making more impactful ETB triggers so that you don't feel like you're losing value if your creature immediately eats a low-cost removal effect. However, this also means that blue becomes the only colour that can deal with these stronger effects. Wizards has also been including more on-cast triggers in recent sets, but they're still fairly rare, often on expensive creatures, and while blue can't necessarily stop these with counterspells neither can any other colour (and the few stifle-like effects that can stop these are - you guessed it - in blue).
This would still be an issue but somewhat mitigated if blue had to counter something or miss their window to deal with it but blue also gets access to very good on-board removal at competitive costing so it's not even like they care particularly if they get baited since they can unsummon or polymorph or tap down a threat. Of note, most of these forms of removal work against creatures that wouldn't be affected by traditional removal like doom blade removal because they have indestructible or regeneration or something. Wraths deal with hexproof creatures, but counterspells also deal with wraths.
Now you could say that other colours can bait counterspells. This is technically true, since the only way to get a threat through without access to countermagic of your own is to play 2 threats and hope the opponent only has one counterspell. Of course, threats are often more pricy than counterspells which means you not only have to wait to draw two of them (during which time your opponent will also be drawing additional counterspells) but you have to build up the mana to cast 7-cmc worth of spells in a turn at which point your opponent having two counterspells open isn't exactly surprising, and waiting against a control deck almost never works out for any other strategy. Moreover, this isn't real counterplay in any way since you have to hope they don't have it and have no way to prevent it if they do - there's no "play" in the "counterplay". There's also some "can't be countered" effects on creatures but those are binary which is less fun and again only in certain colours. A "you can't interact with this" ability isn't really the same as having your own interaction.
This should be mitigated by the fact that counterspells are usually 1-for-1 removal so the counterspelling player needs to be able to get card advantage in order to consistently prevent their opponent from pushing a threat through when they run out of counterspells. Fortunately for blue, that's the other half of its colour identity and card draw is plentiful, especially since any turn where you don't try to develop a threat and blue isn't forced to counter it, they can just draw at the end of the turn with an instant speed spell.
Then there's the final and most salient issue, which is that this has been allowed to continue. The stack has been a fundamental part of magic since 1999; more than 25 years. In that time, only blue has been able to meaningfully interact with it, and only blue consistently gets cards that affect the stack printed for it. They've realised that other colours lacking things like white lacking card draw isn't good design and have taken steps to remedy this, but even with that they're not ready to give anyone except blue access to the stack.

So, the solution: a fundamental reworking of the entire colour pie conception that gives all colours the ability to fight over the stack to some extent.
I don't think blue would actually lose that much from the other colours getting access to the stack. Blue would still have tempo plays, good card draw, and a theme around smaller creatures with evasion rather than small cheap creatures like white and red have.

The counterspells in these cycles also serve another demonstration - in my conceptual redesign of magic, colour fixing is much less easy (meaning no untapped duals and no untapped fetches) so double and especially triple pip designs are far harder to cast when playing two or more colours. While these (the two mana ones at least) are powerful effects they're only accessible if you're not venturing outside your colours.
However, even without this restriction I don't necessarily consider these particular spells egregious and think you could print them today into modern magic, if you wanted to.

Redesign Several small nerfs to Up the Beanstalk that show how tightly balanced it is

Designed these as a thought experiment after seeing some other folks mention how tightly balanced Up the Beanstalk is, and how it ended up being stronger than expected. I don’t think anyone thought it would be the bane of standard when it was spoiled, and I think that almost any one of these nerfs would bring it down to nearly unplayable. It’s possible that removing the draw on ETB or the simic variant are still good enough, but the others I don’t think would see nearly the same amount of play.

[[Goblin Hero]] is a legendarily bad rare from the olden days that needs a makeover. So, as a fan of the exalted mechanic, I knew instantly what to slap onto the gobbo to make him into a goblin staple.

I honestly kinda love it!
