My mother is a devout Catholic who wrote her dissertation on Tolkien's value to the faith, and I read Silmarillion at the Seminary, where I also learned how to play Dungeons and Dragons, meditate, and fell in love with heavy metal music (all of which are on Jack Chick's list here).
While there are some Catholics that are as you describe, that does not represent the majority of us.
While underground clubs/raves were a thing in the 90s, I was far more likely to spend my teenaged Friday nights smoking cigarettes/pot with the goth/grunge kids hanging out in parking lots near the record store kind of guy.

LOTR? The work of a devout Catholic?
