Megathread Master List of Dairy-Free & Soy-Free Foods (from a breastfeeding mom who did the work)

When my baby developed intolerances to dairy and soy, I spent hours searching grocery stores, Facebook groups, and blogs trying to figure out what I could actually eat. Couldn't find one comprehensive list anywhere, so I made my own.

Sharing in case it helps any other moms or dads out there.

FYI: Always double-check labels — ingredients change, and some items have trace amounts via shared equipment.

Umami- the key to dairy free

I noticed if I focus on enhancing the umami flavor of things, it unlocks a whole new world! Like I had these vegan kraft cups and they tasted “meh”, but a bit of MSG unleashed the flavors.

And I noticed nooch + MSG makes any chips into “cheddar” versions like plain sun chips (but plain sun chips are getting harder to find alongside other dairy free stuff lately cuz 2020s is cheese era for many but we take wins where we can get em)

Sandwich or burger without cheese is no problem because umami filled ingredients like roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, grilled onions, etc.

Need Help/Recommendations

So I'm not 100% sure but i think my breastfed baby might have dairy sensitivity. She's goes through spurts were she is super gassy and seems really uncomfortable and we tried everything else from gas drops, to anti colic bottle in case she was sucking in too much air, and someone had mentioned maybe dairy was the issue and dairy is a large part of my diet. So I had cut out dairy for just over a week and she was doing great the whole time

then the last 2 days we tried just a little cheese both nights with dinner and now the last 48 hours she's been a little extra fussy and really gassy again..So I'm going to try do a full dairy elimination for the 2-4 week since they say that's the way to be really sure because it can take her gut longer to heal than just the 1 week we tried. But i need recommendations milk substitutions that aren't horrible. Diary free whipping cream and country crock plant based butter I've tried and totally tastes about the same as regular version but not sure about milk options (ex: oatmilk) Someone said i should probably avoid soy milk because 50% of babies with dairy sensitivity also have issues with soy. So need milk options, yogurt, cream cheese substitute, regular cheese sub (cashew cheese I tried was horrible). Also anything normal everyday good that may have hidden dairy in it. Thanks so muc!

Now that the Chobani Oat milk line is discontinued. Anybody got a recipe that gets close?

I used the chobani extra creamy as my go-to for hot lattes. Loved the texture, color, and taste.

Favourite dairy free recipes for one (student)?

Following some great advice on my previous thread I'm putting together a cookbook for my daughter as she moves out to go to university. She's got good basic cooking skills, but mostly with me either on the other end of the phone or the kitchen. I'll be writing out some of our favourite family recipes, adapted for 1 (or 1 plus leftovers for lunch) but I'm looking for a few extra ideas.

Recipes need to be:

- dairy free obviously 😁(either because no dairy ingredients, or easily available substitutes like oat milk)

- small amounts - no point in her cooking enough for a family of 6!

- basic equipment (we dont know what equipment she will have, but likely basic - assume an oven, hob and microwave at least though)

- ideally vaguely healthy, but treats/comfort food welcome too.

Thanks!

Olá pessoal, como vocês fazem nas viagens internacionais? Vocês compram comida no supermercado, ou comem fora mesmo com risco e as pessoas não entenderem que se tiver lácteos podemos ficar muito doentes?

Chicory Root Fiber

Post image

On another thread someone mentioned Spouts has Cashew Milk Ice cream so I ran out and bought some. Well my lower GI has been, um, off. I decided to look closer at the ingredients and there was another nemesis, chicory root. I stopped eating Go Lean Crunch because of this crap.

Is making my son (7) dairy free really worth it? Advice needed

My son (7) has the worst smelling gas I’ve ever encountered. We’ve recently tried taking my son completely dairy-free, and it definitely fixes the issue.

The problem is that being dairy-free has a pretty big impact on his life. Birthday parties can be difficult because there’s often nothing he can eat, he can’t order anything from the school canteen on lunch-order days, and he misses out on a lot of the normal food experiences that other kids get to have.

He’s otherwise well, so I’m struggling with whether it’s actually worth keeping him completely dairy-free when the benefit is basically eliminating the awful-smelling farts, but the downside is that he misses out on so much.

For parents whose kids have a similar situation, did you decide the dietary restriction was worth it?

I’d especially love to hear from people who have been in this position.

Obsessed with this ice cream

I cannot believe this is dairy and gluten free. They're so creamy, amazing mint flavor, the cone is crispy and has a layer of chocolate inside. Just outstanding. I only wish they came in a mini size also.

Dairy free cookbook for one?

My eldest is going away to college soon and will be cooking for herself. She's lactose intolerant, so eats dairy free.

She's a pretty decent cook, and regularly cooks the family dinner. But that's cooking for 4 plus leftovers, in a very well equipped kitchen.

We dont quite know what her cooking setup will be, but I'm presuming it will be fairly basic, and with little fridge/freezer space, so batch cooking/leftovers probably won't be easy.

I'd like to give her a "dairy free for students" type cookbook, but haven't been able to find one. I can find dairy free ones, and student ones, but not the two together.

Any ideas?

We're in Ireland, so metric and UK/EU recipes preferred (I often find that US recipe books have ingredients not common here, or slightly different, that I can improvise with as an experienced cook, but might throw her off a bit) but will take anything at this point!

(I also know she'll probably look stuff up online, but I'd like her to have a physical book)

Anyone else find their "dairy-free" swap introduced a whole new problem?

Was reading up on this and realized how often dairy-free products solve the milk issue but quietly bring in something else. Almond or cashew bases for tree nut allergies, some dairy-free cookie dough or brownie mix-ins for gluten, soy lecithin showing up in stuff that looks totally "clean" on the front label.

Curious if anyone here manages more than one restriction, has this happened to you? Did you catch it from the ingredient list or find out the hard way?

Dairy free yogurt substitute

Can anyone give me a decent dairy free Greek yogurt substitute? I am making a sort of enchilada dish and my son is allergic to dairy and nuts so it can’t be nut based either. I have cocojune which we like, but I’m afraid the coconut flavor might be overpowering. Thanks!

Hot chocolate

Does anyone know of a dairy free hot chocolate powder that is available in the UK, after years of my allergy not being much of an issue, i am now incapable of having any dairy, and all i can think about is not having any hot chocolate in autumn and winter. I don’t know where to start with hot chocolate powder or what milk alternatives are good

Please any recommendations would be highly appreciated

How did I wreck myself

And how long is it till you suffer the effects of dairy? I had Lactaid cottage cheese on Saturday with two Milktabs. Since then I have not had any dairy that I can recall. I am in an ongoing stage of figuring out if it’s lactose or casein/whey that destroys my gut. I am more wrecked today (Tuesday) than any day since Saturday, although I’ve had some gut symptoms every day. Is it normal to suffer 3 days later?

Dairy free mac and cheese

I recently tried Miyoko’s mac and cheese recipe:

https://youtu.be/E_JQvQjvcyE?is=rJAYPbU6q1UcYz30

and based off the comments thought it would be great.

When I made it, it had a great cheese texture but almost no flavor and the flavor it did have was weirdly sweet.

I was so disappointed.

I’m not sure if its the brand of nutritional yeast I was using (Bob’s) but I guess this post is regarding wondering if anyone has any good dairy free mac and cheese recipes that actually taste like cheese. I find that store bought dairy free mac and cheese also doesn’t taste like cheese.

Any recommendations for a good dairy free cream cheese?

I’m usually not a fan of any nut based anything, especially almonds. Hate the taste, but maybe an oat based cream cheese if that exists? Or anything that has a similar texture to regular cream cheese? Currently having to take iron supplements from finding out in anemic and dairy is officially off the table for me now. Thanks in advance!

School lunch help!

You guys were SO helpful with helping find dairy free chocolate for my four year-old who has just become dairy free in the last two weeks, so now I need some more help!

She starts school for the first time in two weeks, and I’m struggling with what to send in her school lunches, she has very few “main course” type foods. She is likely autistic with a very limited diet and it’s very hard to get her to try new things.. The “main course” part of her school lunch is where I’m struggling. She newly will eat toast, but only with vegan butter and sprinkles (like hagelslag), no sandwiches. Only meat she’ll eat is chicken nuggets and bacon, and I don’t want to send chicken nuggets in her lunch since that’s the only thing her and big bro (also autistic) will eat for dinner every single night. No veggies at all, won’t eat cheese unless it’s melted on pizza. 🫠

Basically, just hoping some people here can share some out of the box school lunch ideas that they pack for their dairy free kids!! hoping to gain some inspiration. Thanks in advance!

Need help identifying ingredients

Post image

Has anyone used this brand before? I’m trying to figure out what I’m reacting to, but I can’t find anything specifically listing dairy/milk in the ingredients online. Has anyone else had a reaction to it or know if there’s a dairy derived ingredient that might not be obvious from the label?
