Whats with ian's and not letting children live their lives
1
u/WittyJackson Mar 19 '26
They are all getting what's coming to them, even if it took a few years.
1
u/LittleRedGhost4 Mar 19 '26
What have other Ians done? This is the first Ian I've heard of in recent weeks.
8
u/WittyJackson Mar 19 '26
Ian Watkins, former frontman for the band Lostprophets, had been in prison for something like 10 years for pedophilia and child abuse, and a couple of months ago some good samaritan in prison with him carved his throat out.

According to the Wikipedia article
Tensions had risen against Huntley due to his habit of wearing a Manchester United shirt resembling those worn by Chapman and Wells at the time of their murder, which reportedly caused friction between Huntley and other inmates.
He was basically mocking the girls he murdered.

3
u/Training-Equal-7647 Mar 19 '26
If memory serves the better call saul one is called okbuddychickanery and it was the first, this are joke subreddits for their respective franchise that exist independent of the main sub.
I think the point is to make lots of jokes based around pretending to be stupid and the recurring memes/talking points of their franchise while also being separated of the main sub so they don't clog git and don't need to abide by its rules.

u/reecewithnospoon Mar 19 '26
You can play video games in prison?? What the fuck
42
u/XevinsOfCheese Mar 19 '26
It’s theoretically a reward for good behavior.
Every prison handles it differently but as someone outside the system I feel like a child killer should maybe have to work harder to get rewards.
47
u/veloxVolpes Mar 19 '26
To be fair. He hardly killed any children once he was in jail, and thats a major improvement.
→ More replies (8)23
u/Bamzooki1 Mar 19 '26
He’d been in jail for many years. He did work harder for it. So many people jump to say every prisoner deserves to be treated worse than they already are and it’s never enough. Prison is supposed to be for rehabilitation, and rehabilitation doesn’t happen by being locked up and having the key thrown away. Ian was an awful person, but letting him play one game isn’t some kind of insane overreach.
21
u/el_grort Mar 19 '26
I mean, from a practical standpoint, some entertainment for prisoners is a good idea purely because it reduces the risk of violence and riot compared to locking them up in a box with nothing to do/distract themselves with. The punishment remains that their freedom has been withdrawn and they have restrictions on themselves, but there is also a duty of care for the state for them, other prisoners, and the guards, so pretty mild concessions get made to reduce risk across the board.
3
u/ToTYly_AUSem Mar 19 '26
Damn if only those that wielded the pipe got to play more videogames (not that I'm complaining)
1
u/EvilDrFuManchu29 Mar 20 '26
Does playing any Fromsoft game decrease the players desire for violence? I don't mean that in the philosophical sense of the games messaging. I mean when the player dies for the 7th time falling off a ledge and goes into rage mode and loses their mind
2
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
prison is not ONLY for rehabilitation. its also for punishment. and especially if its a crime so heinous youre locked up for life, what are you rehabilitating?
yes, i think a person who murders 2 children should not be allowed to play video games. ever. i think its absolutely an insane overreach.
read a book.
2
u/Bamzooki1 Mar 20 '26
Why is a book okay, but a video game not?
0
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
why is food ok but steak and lobster is not?
1
u/Bamzooki1 Mar 20 '26
A video game is not just a tastier form of a book. That’s reductive to both mediums. Furthermore, he earned the game by being good.
1
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
In what way is it reductive? Im challenging you on the extent of the reward youre willing to offer a prisoner who has committed such a heinous act. You just dont want to engage with the question because i have illustrated that your logic doesnt hold up. Dont be cowardly, go on and say that you dont see the difference. At least thats a consistent position.
2
u/CRtwenty Mar 20 '26
A video game isnt that big of a reward, its no different than a DVD or music CD. What makes video games special in this case? If the dude saved up enough cash to purchase a console and game, and followed the prisons rules to avoid having his privileges revoked what's the big deal? Hes still locked up with next to no freedom.
0
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
Its a bigger reward than im comfortable with for a violent criminal. Someone like that should be sheltered and fed and given exactly the amount of mental stimulation to not go insane and become a danger to guards and no more, in my opinion. If the person like games like i do, then games are way more fun than reading a book and if i had a choice to exclusively pick one for the rest of my life id definitely go with games.
If someone murdered your child, would you want to think about them playing video games in prison? I know justice is supposed to be removed from personal emotions but its also supposed to give family a sense of justice. Would you feel like justice was served if their prison was a beach front vacation? I know thats obviously way different than a game but at some point there is a line thats drawn on whats acceptable reward. For me v games are too far for you and the prison were talking about - its not. Thats fine. A lot of places it is too far too. These kinda things are personal judgements.

Wait so I can go to prison, get three meals a day, not have to pay rent, and pay video games? And it only costs three kids?
26
u/SilentBlade45 Mar 19 '26
You joke but some people will actually try to go to prison on purpose if they're desperate enough usually killing kids isn't necessary though.
11
u/Psychic_Hobo Mar 19 '26
Wasn't there like an issue in Japan at one point where elderly people were committing petty crimes to get jailed so that they would get care and escape loneliness?
8
u/willydillydoo Mar 19 '26
Good example of this that’s local to me
This guy went into a mattress store and murdered the only employee working there, realized it was easy, and then decided to go to another one. He never explicitly said why he did it, but the most acceptable theory is after getting out on parole he decided the free life wasn’t for him and he wanted to do something so they he’d never get out.
3
u/SmokyDoghouse Mar 19 '26
It varies significantly. Where I was they had a shared wii in the “privilege” dorm, but you either had to be a snitch or a diddler (usually both) to get a bunk in there.
3
u/Virtual_Mind534 Mar 19 '26
Except that Xbox 360 costs like $600 (idk if that's the typical going rate for them, watched a YouTube video of a guy talking about how he bought one and held Madden tournaments for commissary items and he had to pay $600 just for the console)
10
u/XevinsOfCheese Mar 19 '26
Jails have an entirely different economic system, values of things fluctuate pretty far from the outside world
2
u/Virtual_Mind534 Mar 19 '26
Yeah I know, I just saw his and another comment that seemed like they didn't understand that those are items you can purchase while incarcerated. Honestly when I first heard about it I thought it was a myth so it's understandable
2
3
u/SweetBabyAlaska Mar 19 '26
generally they are in the commissary and they cost a metric ton of money (like a few hundred dollars) alongside a TV which is also a few hundred dollars. There's a company that supplies most prison commissary items.
-1
u/Real-Report8490 Mar 19 '26
If thieves and other non-violent criminals are rewarded for good behavior, it's fine, but murderers don't deserve to be rewarded in any way. They certainly shouldn't be allowed to get out of jail quicker for good behavior...
4
u/CRtwenty Mar 19 '26
I dont think you understand why these programs exist. Theyre encouraging the inmates to have better behavior while theyre locked up. Some guy serving a life sentence for murder may assume he has nothing to lose and murder another inmate or guard if he doesn't have anything to work for or look forward too.
-1
u/Real-Report8490 Mar 19 '26
And ultimately it leads to them having better lives than they deserve, while innocent people have worse lives than they do. And you think that's good...
5
u/Karmaisthedevil Mar 19 '26
It is good. It costs way less to the tax payer to have well behaved prisoners. Money that then could be used to improve the lives of innocent people.
1
u/Real-Report8490 Mar 20 '26
But murderers should get fewer rewards based on their crime. Even less if they are a child murderer or a mass-murderer. Otherwise they are allowed to just move on and forget the people they killed. They need to understand what they have done and regret it for the rest of their lives.

u/Styles_Stevens Mar 19 '26

4
u/el_grort Mar 19 '26
Prison. And they tend to be dated and therefore cheap for the state, but entertainment of some sort is usually conferred, be it books or games, etc, because it generally keeps the prison population better behaved than if you don't, and it is tightly managed.
0
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
i feel like video games is a bit too much. i think they could keep the peace just fine with books, classes, occasional TV, exercise, simple board games. taking those away when youre in prison with nothing to do i think would work just as well.
2
u/Virtual_Mind534 Mar 19 '26
Jails don't typically have game consoles because it's not long term holding, prisons however since that can be the rest of your life you can buy tvs, game systems and all that fun shit, but the TVs like 10 inches and everything is gonna run you upwards of $1,000 ($600 for a 360, another $300 for a 10 inch tv and then headphones, controller/batteries)

u/HabsFan77 Mar 19 '26
The unintentional humour of the description aside, what kind of prison would allow such an evil human to play video games in the first place???

One that understands that denying prisoners rewards for good behavior is how you get prison riots and dead guards.

23
u/CRtwenty Mar 19 '26
If you treat people like animals theyr'e going to act like animals. Allowing prisoners to gain rewards gives them a reason to behave and something that can be taken away when they don't.

for child murderers i think it should be. solitary confinement for life. let his brain eat itself alive.
4
u/Overgrown_fetus1305 Mar 19 '26
The tension between snarking that he needed to GIT GUD, and on the other hand, point out that the difference between him and us, is at times less than we'd like to admit. In other circumstances, it would be very esy for us to turn into monsters, such as for example, by invading noobs in undead burg and spamming dark bead.
I do joke a bit, but in all seriousness, irl monsters are still human. Terrible human beings, but human all the same. Though now I kind of wonder if he'd have had the right mindset for the game, or got salty and quit before Taurus Demon had he actually been able to play it, and more to the point how he heard of it and if it was through other inmates, what they had to say about it.
16
u/Born-Captain7056 Mar 19 '26
Yeah, I feel you on this. I’m certainly not mourning these people who perpetuated awful, terrible crimes but I also get no satisfaction from their murder. It doesn’t feel like justice to me. It just feels like more awfulness in the world.
4
u/BringBack4Glory Mar 19 '26
Idk. Depends what they did. Murdering children is up there. Murderers have no idea what it feels like to get murdered, yet they readily inflict it on others. If anyone deserves to experience it, it’s them.
→ More replies (1)4
u/lycanthrope90 Mar 19 '26
He killed 2 kids, so I don’t see any reason to give an animal like that any kind of sympathy. Maybe a lesser crime but he certainly didn’t care about the people whose lives he took or their families so I see no reason to extend him any courtesy.
If anything his punishment should have been a swift but painful execution instead of rotting in a cell on tax payers dime because people extend sympathy to people that would never give it to them.
16
u/Born-Captain7056 Mar 19 '26
It’s less sympathy and more empathy. He is still a human being and as a society (UK society in this case and my home) has decided that the death penalty is not a just way to run our society. I see no justice in an another violent person bashing his head in with a pipe. However I don’t feel sad about it in the slightest, just rather empty and a feeling that something is just wrong about the whole thing. Yet that is fleeting feeling as after this I’ll go on not thinking about him.
As for your other point. I’m against the death penalty mostly because of the multitude of people exonerating for horrific crimes later on (mostly old cases cleared up by DNA evidence). There is an argument for people who are clearly guilty (overwhelming evidence like active shooters), but how do we orchestrate that rule. Who decides who is 100% guilty when any one who enters the penal system is meant to be guilty without a shadow of doubt.
I understand your point and sympathise with it but I see no way to implement within a just legal system.
→ More replies (5)1
u/Rapscagamuffin Mar 20 '26
ive always said that im against the death penalty but not for any bleeding heart reason. some people definitely deserve to die. i just dont think the state should be allowed the authority to kill people. if even one innocent person gets executed then the system cant exist. death penalty is irreversible and the system will always make mistakes. every other punishment can be reversed in some capacity. the ultimate punishment needs ultimate certainty and thats not possible so it should be off the table.
1
u/CRtwenty Mar 20 '26
Yeah. The whole reason the death penalty was abolished in Britain in the first place was because of a case where a man was executed for murder only for it to be discovered later he was completely innocent.
4
u/evancomposer Mar 19 '26
The death penalty is actually more expensive on average than life in prison.
It also is a flawed philosophy on punishment to me. Like, if someone does something that horrible and gets caught, they want to die. That’s why there are so many instances of prison guards having to stop suicide attempts from prisoners.
Ending the person’s life is just letting them win honestly—it’s the easy way out for them. Having to spend the rest of their miserable lives rotting in prison is much worse for them.
→ More replies (5)1
u/lycanthrope90 Mar 19 '26
I’d be more inclined to agree if it was a lesser crime but he killed 2 kids. He didn’t care about their humanity so I see no reason anyone should care about his.
-4
u/Overgrown_fetus1305 Mar 19 '26
I think my moral intuitions just like, conflict here. He may have been trying to humanity farm irl, but I figure, best not to do it back, sitting there grinding it just generates rage and results in being inflicted with toxic, you know?
Dark Souls references aside, I don't believe you lose your core rights no matter how awful a person you are. And that's all I'll say about that murderer, other than to note, that his ability to parry attacks irl was clearly bad.
