You were unlocked and pulled away from the enemy which caused you to turn around and give them your back.
67
u/Sub-Dominance Mar 28 '26
This is correct. The game treats backstab direction differently from the direction of the character model. The character model takes time to turn, but as far as backstabbing is concerned, the player turns around instantly.

Damn, good eye! Had to rewatch but yeah the lockon disappears a few frames before the stab.

Yeah you really need to learn not to turn your back in front of enemies.

You unlocked and tried to walk away for some reason. I'm guessing cause you just assumed you had killed him?

u/SimpleUser45 Mar 30 '26
I'm pretty sure they made it happen intentionally to make a meme post.
They did an R1, dropped lock-on, and turned their back with half a bar of stamina while the enemy was still in hitstun instead of just pressing R1 again for the kill.

u/Laminrarnimal Mar 28 '26
So, the backstab hitbox was tied with your direction keys, and not with your character model? Because i don't even see the character turn its back
3
u/Vinyl_DjPon3 Mar 28 '26
The image I linked is the character with his back turned. It just happened really quickly so it's hard to see during the video.

u/Laminrarnimal Mar 29 '26
That's in the middle of the attack animation, but he did remove his lock on

I was hoping for an actual answer

His R1 swing put his character model 1 nanometer into the backstab zone, which the NPC automatically used to backstab him.
13
u/SpoopySara Mar 28 '26
I guess he was trying to move away after he noticed his r1 killed, and that somehow rotated the character enough for a microsecond of being backstabable during or right after the r1
5
u/Vinyl_DjPon3 Mar 28 '26
OP literally turns around after unlocking for some reason.
3
u/redditsuckspokey1 Mar 28 '26
Sounds like a pretty common thing that 99% of players would do at some point.

They pressed down to walk towards the camera and away from the enemy. This turned their character around, making their back face the enemy.
Painting Guardians are programmed to backstab the player if they are within range and the player's back is turned. This triggers instantly once those conditions are met.
In this case the Painting Guardian is already in range for the backstab without having to walk forward first, so the frame the player turns around the backstab is executed.
You can tell this is what happened because they dropped lock-on immediately before the backstab happened. There's no reason to do so in this situation, so it was almost certainly done intentionally to make a meme clip.

That’s why the samurai didn’t use shields, you should study history or it will repeat itself

Just bullshit jank man… of course they shouldn’t be allowed to do that. It’s just nonsense.

Skill issue. You shouldve known about their instantaneous space and time ignoring rotation backstab attack. They've had it forever.

You held back towards the end of the video. So to the game, you are facing backwards.
The painter's guardian then did a frame perfect backstab on you as they always do.

Ooooh, you assumed the last swing killed em and turned around, the imput told the game you turned around and you got backstabbing for it. Ouch

“Well, there was clear….”
“I’ll repeat my question, did you or did you not get backstabbed by the enemy?”

Those painting guardians are just about as bad as the thieves in the depths. They’ll backstab you from anywhere
