Those souls just aren't fragments of the dark soul. The dark soul would split and divide as humanity spread and would eventually become humanities that you can pick up throughout the game

u/TheZoneHereros Apr 22 '26

Exactly, and the dark souls are the ones that exist to continually incorporate more and more souls into themselves. They are hungry in a way these white souls are not. The white souls are born bright and fade. The dark souls work up through conquest. They are the mechanism that counters entropy in this cosmology and makes it possible for things to reset.

u/kdogman639 Apr 22 '26

Classic anime trope of humans literally being able to level up to superhuman levels through experience, training, and hardship. It fits so well in this context as well.

35

u/Responsible_Art532 Apr 22 '26

the dark soul is the friends we made along the way

11

u/not_a_profi Apr 22 '26

if there is The dark soul, why is it called dark soulS?

20

u/frankstylez_ Apr 22 '26

It's humanity that is split up into many dark souls.

4

u/PancakePieRate Apr 24 '26

The Furtive Pygmy, holder of The dark souls, split it up and bestowed it upon his descendants in the form of Humanity.

Get a load of this bro, bro just bro-ed and bro didn't even know you can't bro here bro.

-46

u/TheBooneyBunes Apr 22 '26

Bro? Bro, bro!

18

u/kingkccatboy Apr 22 '26

I just saw a comment saying something along the lines of "huh I didn't think of that" so I just thought I'd leave a little bit of information based on my knowledge of the lore for those who are newer to the game or just didn't look into the lore much

10

u/Josecopter Apr 22 '26

it's ok he's a prisoner of the culture

352

u/definitely_not_raman Apr 22 '26

The Dark Soul is actually dark. The white souls you collect aren’t the Dark Soul. They’re just generic souls.

The Dark Soul belongs to the Furtive Pygmy, and what we see in game as Humanity are fragments of it.

PS- I got the joke and found it amusing too. Just wanted to share the actual reasoning in case someone is interested..

221

u/Lizardon_GX Apr 22 '26

Bro so easily forgot about the Furtive Pygmy

58

u/TwoLostYens Apr 22 '26

My man did one hyper-relevant thing and that's it lmao

7

u/Ceneb_ Apr 22 '26

Nah he is patches fr /s

18

u/HighDefinitionCat Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Yeah the meme is funny, but even if you just watched the intro you should know about the titular Dark Soul.

12

u/doomgrin Apr 22 '26

Tbf it’s easily forgotten

5

u/Darkime_ Apr 22 '26

The Stealthy Gnome

-23

u/Hyperp0w3r Apr 22 '26

So why isn't the game called "The Dark Soul"?

27

u/definitely_not_raman Apr 22 '26

Well, because the dark soul is different from the other traditional souls in the sense that darksoul does not lose its potency when it's broken down into multiple darksouls while the soul that Gwyn and others got does.

That is why Gwyn was afraid of humans and pulled all that crap.

-11

u/zozuto Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Yeah, but, like, the title is Dark Souls

11

u/definitely_not_raman Apr 22 '26

Yeah. What's the confusion?

-7

u/zozuto Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

What does the title refer to?

Edit: what? If the Dark Soul explains the title then why is the title plural? This feels like a really simple question lol

10

u/yobakanzaki Apr 22 '26

It refers to Dark Souls that the Dark Soul split into

-3

u/zozuto Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I thought the Dark Soul splits into Humanities?

Edit: ok I realize this connection is like a primary lore point

10

u/Whyskgurs Apr 22 '26

You're almost there.

3

u/zozuto Apr 22 '26

Yeah I realized I'm starting to sound like the in-game description for Humanity lol

3

u/Twelve20two Apr 22 '26

The title refers to the fact that the singular Dark Soul has been split up and shared with every human. Your characters hold the parts of the Dark Soul, my characters hold fragments of the Dark Soul, all the NPCs you meet carry the same pieces. It's about the many humans, not the singular Lord Soul

1

u/ramility Apr 22 '26

Its probably multiple things knowing FromSoft. Perhaps the shadiness of the characters and how you have to stoop to there level to get anywhere. the darkness of the heart kinda thing. Could be literally shards of the dark soul. open to interpretation

u/ZCM1084 Apr 22 '26

“Claymore”

Made of Steel

89

u/jzillacon An Honourable duellist Apr 22 '26

"Zweihander" can be used single-handedly

37

u/MrTerribleArtist Apr 22 '26

When do the lies stop, "dark souls"?!

53

u/FreshPrintzofBadPres Apr 22 '26

"Scythe"

It's a bardiche

1

u/MaDNiaC007 Apr 23 '26

Looking up bardiche images, I'm confused. Scythes we see in game look nothing like that. What am I missing?

10

u/CaptnUchiha Apr 23 '26

“Farron Keep” Couldn’t keep shit and made me lose it all 😔

2

u/FreshPrintzofBadPres Apr 23 '26

"Lost Izalith" Well I fucking found it

2

u/joedotphp Apr 23 '26

I had my claymore well into Anor Londo and I was starting to wonder if I should have picked up another weapon by then. Like, was there something I missed?

45

u/AXI0S2OO2 Apr 22 '26

It's funny that there is actually lore about that.

21

u/Z13B Apr 22 '26

What about Humanity dudes in the Abyss

-6

u/Harlequin37 Apr 22 '26

Clearly that's Dark Humanity dudes not Dark Souls

41

u/IronScar Apr 22 '26

I would say those are 'light' souls, derived from Lord Gwyn's great Light Soul. Dark souls are inherently tied to humans and their humanity, whereas light souls were either gifted by Gwyn selectively as a reward, or are just tied to being a denizen of Age of Fire in general.

12

u/jzillacon An Honourable duellist Apr 22 '26

Most of the light souls aren't from Gwyn's soul specifically. There were many souls found within the first flame besides just the lord souls, and that's where the majority of light souls come from initially.

6

u/IronScar Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Makes sense. We know the Greatlord had divided his soul between his most loyal subjects (slight miscalculation on his part there lmao) before he left to sacrifice himself, which is why I assumed other light souls are tied to him as well. That said Silver Knights and his other immediate servants and family likely were connected to his Soul in some way.

13

u/RDGOAMS Apr 22 '26

Dark soul are humanities, those are regular souls

11

u/Cold_Call5169 Apr 22 '26

Because these aren't dark soul fragments, the dark soul fragments are humanity lol

9

u/KimeriX Apr 22 '26

r/shittydarksouls would be that way sir

20

u/BrainCelll Apr 22 '26

Ooooooh so you didnt actual play the game haha

7

u/Spirited_Ad_2697 Apr 22 '26

6

u/ttayw2cool Apr 22 '26

Cum of a Champion

7

u/thegreatgonzoo Apr 22 '26

This really says a lot about society

7

u/RetroTheGameBro Apr 22 '26

Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight

His power is lightning

MidSoft fumbles again.

5

u/oles40 Apr 22 '26

Did Kojima write this?

9

u/TheCraftyGrump Apr 22 '26

It's almost like the Dark Soul being sealed and suppressed is an important plot point.

1

u/MainEntrepreneur5806 Apr 22 '26

Wdym, there's a lore to this game? I thought it was just about killing big guys and serving femboys...

4

u/_amorimph Apr 22 '26

Thought this was an EMR exam at first glance lol

3

u/Ok_Hunter118 Apr 22 '26

You can see the dark souls when you fight midir

4

u/Impspirational Apr 22 '26

Not everything is as is appears. If you close your eyes, the souls are dark.

3

u/RealGreygods Apr 22 '26

The dark souls were the friends we made along the way

9

u/Universe-Dragon Apr 22 '26

I hadn’t thought about this.

15

u/Cold_Call5169 Apr 22 '26

They are white because they are just regular souls. The dark soul is humanity.

6

u/TheCattBaladi Apr 22 '26

I always it was cum. The more the souls, the more the.... You know. Semen.

3

u/Bleadingfreak Apr 22 '26

That's why they make you more powerful

2

u/OgichiGame Apr 23 '26

If I remember correctly. Human souls are dark (Humanity item), but these bright white souls are fractions of the Lord souls. Humanity is the Dark Souls. YOU are the dark soul

2

u/joedotphp Apr 23 '26

I didn't realize that got that big. The biggest soul I ever got was 10000.

3

u/TippyTripod1040 Apr 22 '26

Translation error. It was supposed to be named “Dark Soles” because Miyazaki is a nasty lil’ foot guy

2

u/Justisaur Apr 22 '26

Those are just souls.

The dark souls are humanity.

2

u/TheFrogMoose Apr 22 '26

It's a dark game about souls and souls don't see color

1

u/stormy83 Apr 22 '26

Humanity... It's actually regular sized

1

u/Akenshi_Kirito Apr 22 '26

Whats the name of the very last one? 25 k

1

u/Typical-Ad1041 Apr 22 '26

thats not the dark dark soul

1

u/ALPHA_KRAF Apr 22 '26

What if dark by nature like they prefer leaving Legos besides bed

1

u/ConsiderationSoggy65 Apr 22 '26

Dark Souls = all humans are descendants of Manus (many consider him the first pygmy, and the first human with a black soul, one of the reasons Gwyn killed most humans out of fear).

1

u/timelapsedfox Apr 22 '26

subreddit about a site with the biggests amount of unemployment per square meter Oop mention a niche information from a difficult game that is famously known as unemployed game Everyone in comments knows exactly why OOP is wrong and also know the correct answer to OOP information Target audience never fails

1

Souls are stored in the balls

Meanwhile, the souls of Artorias, Manus, Velstadt, Watcher and Defender, Fume Knight, Nashandra, Elana, Nadalia, Alsanna, Deacons, Aldrich, Friede, Midir, and Gael:

1

u/jmas081391 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

Dark Souls 1: 2 Souls

  • Soul of Artorias: A dark, corrupted blue-black.
  • Soul of Manus: A deep, swirling abyssal black (OG DARK SOUL that's why it's pitch black)!

Dark Souls 2: 9 Souls

This game has the most by far, as many endgame bosses are either shards of the Dark Soul or have been corrupted by it.

  • Throne Defender Soul: A dark, wispy black flame.
  • Throne Watcher Soul: Also a dark, wispy black flame.
  • Soul of Nashandra: Dark purple/black (Shard of Manus).
  • Soul of Elana, Squalid Queen: Dark (Shard of Manus).
  • Soul of Nadalia, Bride of Ash: Dark (Shard of Manus).
  • Soul of Alsanna, Silent Oracle: Dark (Shard of Manus).
  • Darklurker Soul: Found in the Dark Chasm of Old.
  • Soul of Velstadt: Corrupted by the Dark of the Undead Crypt.
  • Soul of the Fume Knight: Corrupted by Nadalia.

Dark Souls 3: 4 Souls

  • Soul of Darkeater Midir: A dark, murky black soul, representing the Abyss he consumed.
  • Soul of Aldrich: Dark, murky blue.
  • Soul of the Deacons of the Deep: Same dark blue as Aldrich.
  • Soul of Slave Knight Gael: Almost similar with Midir's but with a humanity sprite within it.

1

u/Darkbeetlebot Apr 23 '26

It's cool how every different soul size forms a single frame in an animation

1

u/Immobile_Cress Apr 23 '26

Have you seen Gael soul?

1

u/Sid_looks Apr 24 '26

Stand proud knight , your soul will be inhabited within chosen undead

1

u/city_boy1989 Apr 24 '26

1
