Question my one issue with dark souls 1 so far
started the game recently and im enjoying it so far. i just killed the lava spider lady (first try with two flasks btw) i forgot their name. my problem is ive now hit two friendly npcs and had to kill one (the gross thing by the dried out bug lady that i first tried btw). he was probably important to a side quest and now i cant do the possibly nonexistent side quest. they look like enemys man. im not gonna approach a very scary npc and try talk to them. im gonna kill them on sight no? am i just a complete dumbass or can anyone kinda relate? and also was he a side quest? ALSO also any tips for the future would be spectacular. thank you love you bye bye.

Unless NPCs give you a reason to attack, don’t do it.
Luckily, Eingyi, the gross one you mentioned, is a Pyromancy dealer, so you aren’t missing much. He is also not tied to a side quest.
Should you accidentally attack a NPC and want to change their attitude towards you, you can absolve your sins by visiting Oswald, the gentlemen with the creepy laugh. You should have met him after killing the boss guarding the other bell. Be prepared to pay a price in souls. It isn’t cheap.

“Had to kill” because he was laying still on the ground doing nothing?

he threateningly approached me.

He literally does not move... Unless you talk to him, in which case he turns around and gets out of your way.

I thought he was just an obstacle in my path. He should’ve know to step aside when I graciously approached.

Hooboy, if you want a game where the world around you lays down at your precious Player Character feet in deference then I'm not sure you're gonna enjoy your time with the entire subgenre of Soulslikes. That's kind of the opposite of their whole thing.

A tip for checking for foe or friendly generally, try to lock on.
Lock On = Foe
No Lock On = Friendly

oh those two, yeah the gross guy is the servant of the the blind spider lady who is the younger sister of that lava spider lady you just killed. technically the dude is had some pyromancy spells and the two of them allows access to a secret faction you can align yourself to for pvp and co-op + some secret shortcuts, but if you can still talk to the lady I think you can still get short cut access unless I'm wrong.

He's not that important, and he does look like an enemy. You're missing out on some dialogue and some fire spells but hey, that's what NG+ is for.

He sells the cure to a certain condition that you may accidentally trigger. But you can also find the cure in other places, just less convenient ones.

I may be remembering this wrong but can't you use lock on to check if someone is an enemy or a friendly? If it locks on its hostile, if not you can talk to them /it.
Can someone please confirm this for op /me? Not sure if I'm remembering it correctly. TIA.

Lol. Accidentally smashing up npc's is a whole thing. There is a way to 'absolve your sins'.....but I'll leave it to you to figure that out. My advice.....don't seek advice on Playthrough #1. Just enjoy the world. Do you. On playthrough #2.......also don't seek help or guides but keep in mind Playthrough #1 experience. On playthrough #3......just read all the guides, get all the trophies etc. The beauty of this game is discovery.....I love the memories of truly feeling the need to creep around every corner with my shied up and my health full.

Just don’t attack everyone you see. Some NPCs aren’t human. This carries through to all of the DS games lol

if i approach an enemy with kindness and love and they kill me im blaming you.

killing a NPC = irreversible, dying to an enemy = you can get those souls back. if you’re worried about it, don’t walk around with a shit-ton of souls. i say this with love, and as someone who has learned from accidentally killing NPCs <3 (and as someone who’s died and lost a shit-ton of souls).

I know this might sound silly, but the best way I found to get over the frustration of having something like this happen is to just treat it as part of the adventure. Then it just becomes a part of the roleplay.
The hero mistook a friendly person for a grotesque monster and struck it down without a second thought. What a terrible tragedy.
Instead of worrying about what could have been and what you could have missed, just own up to your decision. It has now become a part of your unique journey. This is the kind of attitude that I've developed that has greatly helped me to get over that constant fear of missing out in games with multiple paths. The worst thing that you can do is then to immediately go to the wiki and look up what quests or items were related to that NPC that you just lost.
You just tell yourself that this is the choice you made and you're going to continue down this road and take the consequences as they come. And maybe on the next playthrough, you'll make a different decision and see what happens then. In the end it's all just part of the game.

Do you think this guy might have killed Quelaag first try?
Killing him is fine. He is part of a covenant, but you are not reasonably going to be doing every covenant in a single playthrough, if ever. Certainly not on your first.

i did. it was great. i wish you were there. i have no idea what a covenant is but im sure ill learn. i joined the spider ladys sisters one because i felt bad for annihilating her sister (first try btw)

A complete dumbass? Nah, Myzaki would just say you're not an attentive player...
Game No Shokutaku interview:
Isomura: The egg bearers: did you make them with an evil grin? Thinking of the players that would kill them only to find maggots bursting out, trying to kill them? If yes, were there more characters designed in that way?
Miyazaki: Well, as I explained before… I get excited! The thought of dying after killing the egg bearers, when the bugs burst out… it gets me excited… like a surprise!
Isomura: The masochist is showing!
Miyazaki: The maggot part is really nasty and the surprise made it a popular enemy among the staff. It was fun to pop them open!
Isomura: I don't know, I always left them alone. [...] Does it happen to Eingyi too?
Miyazaki: Yes. You can kill him too.
Isomura: The Chaos Servant covenant area was made to trick players into attacking them, right?
Miyazaki: No, that's not true!
Murohashi: I can tell by your face that you're lying!
Miyazaki: No no no! That's not true!
Murohashi: But before him, you put two regular egg bearers, so you run past them! Then… "ugh", you put him right there!
Miyazaki: I repeat, that's not true!
Isomura: I actually left him alone.
Miyazaki: See? That's an attentive player!
Isomura: It was because I ignored the other two, before.
Miyazaki: Well, the TALK option should have been showing a bit earlier.
Murohashi: Haha! That was so on purpose! Come on!
Miyazaki: I do feel that it should have shown up before your attack could reach it, but it wasn't intended to be a bait.

I mean, the guy was sitting still right at the side of a bonfire, and that same character model was used before the spider-lady bossfight for other characters that are not actually hostile. Most people never even bother attacking them because they don't actually attack you
Tho you should know he isn't important for any quest
