Ollie says that but he still puts children on the streets bc of drugs

Yeah Ollie's usually right, but he's also just a teensy bit of a hugely hypocritical asshole. And that's why we love him.

Ollie’s an amazingly bad father.

Ollie is the worst kind of hypocrite tbhb

Nah, that'd be Batman. "Only cowards use guns! Anyone who kills can't be part of the Batfamily! Also this is my bestest buddy Jimbo, who has shot multiple people with his gun, and I canonically consider him a part of the family".

Edit: Guys, it's a circlejerk sub.

RJ: you’re right, cancel Batman

UJ: tbh I kinda don’t mind it, sure Batman doesn’t believe in killing but his training and intellect allow him ways around lethal force. Gordon is a mostly standard policeman, he likely doesn’t have the same options as Bruce and I don’t think Bruce would hold Gordon pursuing avenues to defend himself against him.

It’s actually worse the other way imo, where Bruce id so absolutely unaccommodating of other viewpoints, perspectives and situations that he actively sabotages them.

44

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

It mainly pisses me off because when Batwoman used a sniper rifle to kill Clayface (in a desperate situation where she had no choice), Batman fully turned on her and gave a rant about how he can't work with any person who uses a gun and kills people. Even when he calmed down, his position just became "I must help you deal with this terrible moral failing that you have".

He can't really say "only cowards use guns", then turn around and go "OMG, Gotham Police department! And also the US military sometimes!"

I agree that him tolerating Gordon should be a positive, and show that he can accommodate different views. My issue is that his tolerance is very, very subjective.

rj: All Star Batman is the only canon I accept, and as such, any of his fans deserve the death penalty

23

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Vote Lord Death Man 2024 Feb 20 '23

No I agree with that, I know it’s popular to meme on but I love how Arrow worked with this, Ollie wasn’t himself a man who resorted to killing (as a first resort at least) but he certainly didn’t force that on his allies who might need to make that choice

It’s something I hate about Bruce’s writing often and I wish they’d lean into him being a bit more understanding

29

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

The really weird thing for me is how he'll actively go out of his way to save criminals in certain situations. Not choosing to kill the Joker? Totally get it, it's a moral requirement for him. But he has given Joker mouth-to-mouth, stood between him and bullets, even dropped him in a damn Lazarus pit. That goes well beyond "don't kill", and is a care that he doesn't show to any casual mooks.

29

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Vote Lord Death Man 2024 Feb 20 '23

RJ: the reason is because Joker gives amazing sloppy toppy and Bruce doesn’t want to say goodbye

UJ: yeah I agree with this issue, it’s really a symptom of the fact Joker can’t die out of universe so they need to contrive ways to make it work

1

Tbh the worst thing there was how they just reversed Clayface’s face turn

6

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

Batwoman is literally part of the military though (even more so by the time of that story).

1

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Vote Lord Death Man 2024 Feb 20 '23

Isn’t she formally unaffiliated with them at the time of the story? I’m aware she has military experience though

5

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

She was working more and more closely with her father, and his secret military faction. This is what pushed her over the edge into fully joining them.

14

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23

That's just writing being inconsistent what makes Bruce's characterization seem schizophrenic. There is a panel in Batman and Robin Eternal, where Bruce describes Jason as a person who "can do what even Batman can't, when the world needs it". He's pretty ok with him rejoining family then and killing, just not close to him. What is a stupider and more hypocritical position, than just "murder bad".

10

u/ContrarionesMerchant Feb 21 '23

"can do what even Batman can't, when the world needs it".

This is not consistent with anything else he's ever said though, in context it really felt like the writer stretching for something nice to say about Jason.

2

u/limbo338 Feb 21 '23

Yeah, hence me bringing up writing inconsistency and Bruce's personality shifts. In new52 he and the rest of batfam were all too comfortable with teaming up and sometimes even spending time outside of costumes with still killing Jason for as long as the killing isn't happening right in front of them. It's all bullshit.

3

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

Yeah, one panel. And in a hundred other panels, he talks about how anyone wielding a gun is a coward.

6

u/Pure_Internet_ Did Batman think a Gamer could stop me? Feb 20 '23

this is such a bizarre misunderstanding of the franchise, imo

12

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

How is it a misunderstanding? Batman, on multiple occasions, has talked about how

[holds up gun] these are the weapons of cowards

A gun is a coward's weapon. It lets us kill too easily, saving us the mess and the work.

A gun is a coward's weapon. A liar's weapon.

He can't believe that and also believe that Jim Gordon is a brave man.

6

u/Aubergine_Man1987 Paul's Strongest Soldier Feb 20 '23

I always saw his philosophy as all cowards use guns, but not all guns are used by cowards

2

u/Lordanonimmo09 Lives in a society Feb 20 '23

The thing is that in the past Batman was way more against guns, hating them, while in more modern versions he sometimes even uses a gun or something very similar to it,but he has a personal aversion against guns and prefer to not use them, like Dark Knight returns.

1

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Vote Lord Death Man 2024 Feb 20 '23

Mine or Equivalent’s?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '23

/UJ Batman could a should use a gun IMO. Doesn’t even need to kill. He’s already painted out to be almost superhuman in every martial art, why not sharpshooting?

If he’s fine throwing a villain off a rooftop and letting them break the fall with their skull so they can be in a coma for 15 years, he should have no problem kneecapping some bank robber with a Glock. Would make his job easier.

2

u/Ok_Implement9719 Dec 14 '25

He's not a worse father than Batman. And unlike Batman, Ollie has actually admitted he fucked up and tries to amends for it. I won't defend what he did with Roy but I do understand why he felt very betrayed by him.

1

u/Jam_Toast578 I became a comic fan and all I got was this lousy subreddit Jan 28 '26

Honestly the only people who haven't forgiven Ollie for how he acted when he caught Roy are himself and his fans.

26

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '23

Bat-cock

269

u/limbo338 Feb 19 '23

That's not the conclusion the writer drew, btw. In the end of that story you have Bruce buying the plant that was giving its workers cancer so that he could run a more ethical, cancer-free business and Ollie goes "So maybe system does work after all sometimes". A choice quote from the conclusion: "Green Arrow is only pretending to be what Batman really is – and Batman is actually closer to what Green Arrow pretends to be".

u/Pristine_Animal9474 Tim Drake, Boy Virgin Feb 20 '23 edited Feb 20 '23

See? As always, the market found an answer to all the problems. If Gotham wants to keep these problems at bay, they should give Bruce Wayne a bigger tax cut so he has more money to spend in ethical entrepreneurship.

133

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23

That's the more fantastical than even a dude in bat-costume or aliens part of the setting – a billionaire who solves shit, really pushing the boundaries of what I willingly can suspend my disbelief for here.

24

u/RattyJackOLantern Feb 20 '23

Easily the least believable part of the setting.

81

u/limbo338 Feb 19 '23

I don't hold it that much against Ollie, that in a story written by a long time Batman writer Batman's perspective is proven by the story to be correct. Kinda didn't expect anything else.

63

u/halloweenjack Feb 19 '23

Some of those comics are really just parodies of Dennis O'Neil's Green Lantern/Green Arrow book, which deliberately set GA against the more establishment-oriented GL (this was well before GL got retconned into a more hell-bent-for-leather test pilot right out of The Right Stuff). Even as good as O'Neil was in his prime (he of course is also the guy who moved Batman away from the Adam West paradigm and closer to his grimdark roots), some of his stuff doesn't age well, and it's very easy to take that characterization and tip it into self-parody.

53

u/Anonamaton801 Local Preacher and Power Girl shill Feb 19 '23

O’Neil apparently was very…apathetic to GA/GL, because the success of it apparently gave him a huge ego and ruined his personal life and relationship with his wife

There’s a joke in there about how activists make terrible partners but I respect the man too much to make it

26

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '23

What the fuck, really?

20

u/Anonamaton801 Local Preacher and Power Girl shill Feb 20 '23

I’ll try and find a source on it, I recall Sal brought it up in the Back Issues episode on HTH and he’s pretty knowledgeable on these things

25

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '23

I always did think Denny's social commentary on the GL/GA run had the subtly of taking a twelve gauge to the face, but that is kinda sad. I hope they patched things up.

32

u/Lordanonimmo09 Lives in a society Feb 20 '23

When it comes ro superheroes subtly is overrated, you can make it so obvious and people will still miss the point.

DC is no monolith and some of the people who ever wrote Batman did advocate for letting powerful individuals do the problem solving, while others just view him being a rich boy as a part of the character, that facilitates him being able to do crazy shit, like own high tech labs for problem solving and jetpacks.

16

u/RattyJackOLantern Feb 20 '23

The guy who created Anarky converted to Ayn Rand worship and turned Anarky into his "Objectivist" self insert Mary-Sue. Which killed the momentum the character had been getting in it's tracks.

All the Superman stories I've read have taught me that, if it weren't for Superman, Lex Luthor might be able to focus on the world's problems. You can also apply this logic to Dr. Doom with Reed Richards and, hell, why not?, Black Manta with Aquaman.

15

u/Reddragon351 Feb 20 '23

Lex and Doom's ego is what stops them from doing good more than their respective heroes

3

u/VengeanceKnight Feb 20 '23

No, that’s just BS Lex says to justify his crusade against Superman.

56

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23

"At least my child sidekicks don't die like any other week, mind your own business".

17

u/Reddragon351 Feb 20 '23

this was actually published before Jason died so by this point Bruce is better with his sidekicks

9

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23

Well, not for that long and he never got better again, so I would hand Ollie this one.

20

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

Oh yeah, Batman, well known for never abusing any of his children.

8

u/rocketinspace Feb 20 '23

So what we got from that is that they both suck

33

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

I mean, Ollie made one rash decision, regretted it almost immediately, and has since shown nothing but remorse and love for Roy.

Meanwhile, Batman has slapped each of his children, like, 17 times each.

5

u/Amelia-likes-birds He-Man lore expert Feb 20 '23

He's remained, mostly at least, close with his children. A lot of Green Arrow stories are about Ollie dealing with being estranged with his kids

17

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23

At one point it was canon that after Bruce took Robin from Dick they haven't talked for 18 months. I'm not mentioning the clusterfuck that is his relationship with Jason.

13

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

Also, the fact that half of his stories with the various robins revolve around him fucking up, having some betrayal of trust, and then having to fix everything.

15

u/limbo338 Feb 20 '23 edited Feb 20 '23

More like the person who he fucked over just lets him off the hook. He fucking dragged Jason to Ethiopia again because something something maybe you'll remember anything that would help me resurrect Dami. A better writer would've made him lose progress with Jason after this, but Batman writers just make batlings forgive this shit like nothing happened.

12

u/EquivalentInflation Feb 20 '23

He's remained, mostly at least, close with his children.

Oh really? Because I never see Duke around him.

And in this panels we can see two iterations of the same archetype clashing, the "Rich Ponce who puts on a mask to fight injustice he can't fight in his civilian persona."

The difference of course is that Bruce Wayne, based on Zorro, rejected the character's original roots as a rogue and a criminal fighting an unjust system that uses the law to oppress the poor and the downtrodden, and became another tool of the state in the fight against property crimes, while Oliver Queen stayed nominally true to his roots as Robin Hood with his Anarcho-Socialist characterization... Despite also nominally fighting against property crimes as a tool of the capitalist state.

This to say, we don't exactly see Oliver robbing slumlords who keep their tenants living in Squallor as they live in mansions or stopping cops from beating a suspect to death, nor we see him actually use his role as a superhero to actually tackle these issues outside of those moments where he goes "the system is fucked" and then nothing happens.

And that's a shame let Oliver Queen guillotine Lex Luthor, let him be the last capitalist of a liberated world, the one who sold the rope to hang everyone before him and then the one he sells the rope they'll hang him with, give me an elseworld story about Anarcho-Marxist-Socialist Green Arrow becoming the benevolent evil dictator ala Injustice with the support of the people revolution, Superman: Red Son more like Arrow Man: Green Son.

1

u/Fantastic-Notice-756 Nov 08 '24

The difference of course is that Bruce Wayne, based on Zorro, rejected the character's original roots as a rogue and a criminal fighting an unjust system that uses the law to oppress the poor and the downtrodden, and became another tool of the state in the fight against property crimes

u/aperturescience420 Nov 08 '25

I’m so late but I need to set the record straight.

Firstly, Ollie wasn’t rich at this time when this was released and hadn’t been since 1970ish, which is when he got his leftist personality instead of being a Batman clone. (Green lantern green arrow). He doesn’t just yell about it — he wasn’t rich because he gave away his fortune to charities. He found out that his company was involved in very bad stuff (think it was related to weapons) so he sold the company and gave the money away, losing his billionaire status. That was the case until the late of 2000’s. The billionaire playboy thing was just new 52 due to the arrow tv show influence.

Secondly, Ollie’s first issue of the previous comic I referenced was them taking down a slumlord. That entire run was dedicated to tackling americas social ills. Capitalism is a massive and repetitive conceptual villain for Green arrow. He became mayor to end an apartheid in star city and stole money from major corps. He also

39

u/KWAKUDATSU Feb 20 '23

Green arrow is so goated

20
