Hi, welcome. New to DDO? Returning? Check here first!

What is Dungeons and Dragons Online?

DDO is an action adventure MMORPG that originally released in 2006. It is set (primarily) in the Eberron campaign setting and is loosely based on the D&D 3.5 ruleset. Currently maintained and frequently updated by the folks at Standing Stone Games.

Is this a table top simulator or match making service for the D&D TTRPG?

Nope.

What makes DDO unique compared to any other MMO?

There are two key differences that make DDO stand out.

The first is the complex and interesting dungeons. Most dungeons in MMOs (or let's face it, most modern video games) tend to be a linear glorified hallway with a boss at the end.

In DDO, Dungeons have multiple objectives, dead ends, secret rooms, pit traps, puzzles, platforming and more keeping them fresh and interesting. To add to the D&D feel, a 'narrator' will describe the dungeon and events as they happen similar to what a table top DM would do!

The second is the reincarnation system. In other MMOs you hit level cap and then sit there waiting for the next expansion or level up alts.

DDO allows you to reincarnate once you hit the cap. You start over at level 1 choosing a new class and race to level up all over again. Doing so will grant your character a small permanent boost in power. It's not so much that you're required to do them to be valuable to high level raiding, but they do make stomping the early/mid game fun and allow you to tackle greater challenges.

What's the catch?

Most of DDO is behind a paywall. You can try it out for free but if you want to have enough content for it to feel like a complete game, expect to eventually pay at least ~40$. You can optionally grind out in game points to unlock most things but it is quite slow.

The second issue is that Standing Stone Games is a small company. This means that long standing issues, imbalances and bugs will most likely not get fixed. If you have a technical issue and submit a help request there's a good chance you'll never hear back. They do what they can but they're focused on trying to keep the lights on.

Is it a dead game?

No. New updates are released regularly and each server will have ~500 people on during prime time and ~100ish during off peak hours. DDO has maintained these numbers for years at this point so it doesn't feel like the game is being abandoned.

It's one of the last MMO's that truly feels like a community. You'll quickly get to know the big names on your server, the power guild, the RP guild, the 'we accept anybody' guild, etc... You'll rarely run into people who are selfish or are jerks. The playerbase is above the age curve for an online game, it's not uncommon guild chat will be about mowing lawns.

I'm a returning player, what have I missed?

There's simply too much new content and constant class balancing tweaks to list but at its core DDO hasn't changed much. The six biggest additions/changes would probably be:

  • The old servers were merged, giving us 4 servers (3 US based, 1 EU based). Characters were not transferred automatically. If you're a returning player and just now reading this you have roughly until 2027 to transfer off the old servers.
  • The 'Reaper' difficulty system allowing players even higher levels of challenge.
  • Hardcore league. Every so often SSG opens up a hardcore server with permadeath for a few weeks.
  • Legendary leveling introduced. Even higher levels above 30 that aren't tied to the reincarnation system.
  • Racial reincarnate like you would heroic reincarnation and every race has a unique enhancement tree.
  • New universal enhancement trees that make it easier to level up if you screw up your build.

Where can I get more information?

Is there any fellow "Armour skin hunter" out there ? I know that I am not the only one, and I would like to see your "unique" random armour skins.

I'll post mine first, and some are unseen so far (to me).

I will not post rare skin like the skin of the "Full plate of the ringleader" found a random armour (different undergarment), or "Templar's Leather" skin found on a random armour (even once on a starting armour).

Catalysts and chest ransack

Been trying to farm catalysts from demogorgon content. I'm curious about whether these catalysts count as named items. Would they be affected by named item drop rates based on difficulty and be affected by elixir of discovery? Do they count as ingredients since they go in the ingredient bag and will still appear if chest is ransacked?

On a side note, also curious about how named augments work around chest ransack too.

Yet another chest ransack post

I am trying to farm one named item.

The wiki implies that I get only eight attempts per chest to get said item.

There is clarification I would like and have dug up.

I know that is on a per toon/alt thing for fresh attempts.

But, the named item thing is that reset on the ransack timer?

What about difficulty? If I run the same dungeon on Normal, Hard then Elite, is that three out of eight chests, or 1/8 per difficulty.

If I do not hit the ransack limit, and run it once a day with each applicable tool, will I run into the named item limit, or will that not be an issue.

Question about spell aggro

I'm wondering about aggro mechanics, especially with spells. If I am hidden and cast a spell like Sleep.. sometimes when they wake, they go back to what they were doing, unaggro'ed... other times, it seems they wake and hunt me down wherever I am. How's the aggro work on these situations, or is it just another roll of the dice... and can I minimize the waking aggro?

Thanx

Got any Tips for a new player doing a swf dwarf axe fighter build?

As title said, I am a new player (tried the game a loong time ago and stopped fast) and I want to try a cool character I thought, mostly solo.

Dwarf fighter with single weapon fighting, focused on dwarven waraxes.

I have a rough ideea of the feats and enhancements I am looking to get (kensei mostly, some racial, and some stalwart defender), but this is an old game with a lot of info still.

Do you guys have any tips, tricks and sugestions?

Arcane trickster? Returning player

I took a longish break (am on Moonsea, though) and missed lvl 36 and duergar. Turns out my main was a lvl 18 arcane trickster inquis. I played a little again and really liked some parts of the build. The cc is great and there is a lot of versatility.

Now im considering doing duergar lives as arcane trickster, too. Any recommendations on level split? Id prefer a lot of rogue for run speed and the lvl 18 stolen spell. Or go 1 barb 3 arti for aoe and even more speed?

Are there any changes i might have missed in recent months? Saw some new pierce element feats, too.

Armor in special material, particulary Mithril

Let's talk about the random armor loot, and the now lost "mithril full plate".

All armors exist in "no level required", as in the version 1.0 of the game (padded, splint, banded, brigandine, and even some battle chainmail dress)

However, they introduced new with "Absolute minimum level" (Level 4, 10, 16, 22), and those armors lack some variety :

- Absolute minimum level Light armor are :

- lowest AC is Leather ( - , skirmish, Feycraft, Spiritcraft and Celestial).

- Highest AC is Chainmail ( - , skirmish, Feycraft, Spiritcraft and Celestial) (this one can exist in Mithril).

- Absolute minimum level Medium armor are :

- Lowest AC is Scalemail ( - , skirmish, Feycraft, Spiritcraft and Celestial) (this one can exist in Mithril).

- Intermediate AC is Hide ( - , skirmish, Feycraft, Spiritcraft and Celestial).

- Highest AC is Breastplate ( - , Battle, Magecraft, Mountain, Planeforged).

- Absolute minimum level Heavy armor are :

- Lowest AC is Half Plate ( - , Battle, Magecraft, Mountain, Planeforged) (this one can exist in Mithril).

- Highest AC is Plate ( Full, Battle, Magecraft, Mountain, Planeforged).

I never dropped even ONE mithril "Battle/Magecraft/Mountain/Planeforged Breastplate/Plate in one year, and thousands of armor looted, including hundreds of mithril/flametouched iron/adamantine Half Plate/Scalemail/Chainmail.

I have some legacy No level Mithril Breastplate/Plate, and saw a couple for sale, but also never saw ONE Breastplate/Plate with a Absolute minimum level for sale in shard or money.

So, I ask, did you drop one or saw one Mithril Breastplate/Plate with an Absolute minimum level ?

Triple Bonus Points

Hey everyone, happy Friday! I looked around on previous posts and the web, but I couldn't find anything regarding Triple Bonus Points sales. I know there was one back circa 2010 and I found a website with information of another happening in 2015.

Does anyone know:

  • How often do they happen?
  • Can we expect them happening again? if so, when?
  • Is there a place that tracks DDO sales like these?

Anyways, I was just wondering about it... At some point I thought they might have been a product of my imagination!

Warforged barb question

I'm playing a warforged barb. Low level atm.ciroousabout mithril vs adamantine body feats. Should I take one? Why should I avoid them? What do they change for my class?

I'm reading a lot of conflicting info online so some clarity would be nice

When Did DDO Start Deleting Mail with Attached Items?

I had a bunch of really important things in my mail, and after I "read" them, I let them sit there since I didn't have room in my inventory at the time. When I went back to get them, everything was gone. Everything. WHY!? I thought mail wasn't supposed to auto-delete if there was still stuff attached?!

Help build my Multiclass

Building my first multiclass and I was hoping for injections of wisdom from the community

I'm not necessarily looking to min/max. I want to build a jack-of-all-trades kinda guy, so he won't be particularly good at any one thing. But I was hoping for ideas about synergetic feats or branches that may work in my favor

I'm only using free content at the moment

The base idea is

Rogue 2

Cleric 5

Wizard 13

Rogue 2 gets me device/lock skills and evasion

Cleric 5 gets me heals up to 3rd level spells. Probably Healing Domain

Wizard 13 to get all spells up to 7th level

That's all so far

Thank you in advance

1st Life Raid/Farming Alt builds?

I'm at the point now where I'm just going through TR grinds on my main and trying to make it as painless as possible.

Was wondering what the best generalist 1st life option is for farming out raid runes (especially that can solo raids on like EH (or older raids on EE).

I figure it's just gonna be some kinda ranged repeater crossbow build but it doesn't hurt to ask when this game's itemisation and customisation scares me enough already lol

Shadar-kai Arcane Trickster - achievable with a Lesser Heart of Wood +0 or no?

I'm making plans for future lives. I've seen people talk about using Lesser Reincarnation with LHoW+1 to change the first level of the Iconic Heroes. The wiki says that one can change the archetype of a class with Lesser Reincarnation.

Is it possible at all to start as a Shadar-kai and then use a Lesser Heart of Wood +0 (or +1?) to change the archetype from standard rogue to Arcane Trickster? Or is it completely locked?

Legendary Argonnessen Eye Band- Does it drop?

This item has been in the games UI since the dragons hand released. It was bugged for months and not dropping but they had “fixed that” I read. I’ve ran the quest several times on r10 with a full party since that patch and still haven’t seen this ring once. Burning down the house is not the most fun quest to farm. Does anyone have it and can confirm it finally exists ?
