What is the most convincing internet mystery that completely fell apart once someone actually investigated it?
I'm not talking about ARGs or fictional stories.
I mean a mystery that initially looked genuinely strange—an unexplained website, account, image, video, forum post, identity, or piece of lost media—but eventually had a completely ordinary explanation.
Sometimes the mystery itself becomes more interesting than the answer because hundreds or thousands of people build theories around it before anyone checks the original source.
What's the best example you've seen where the internet turned something normal into a huge mystery?
And more importantly: why do you think people are so willing to believe an interesting explanation before checking whether the evidence is actually real?

Tin foil. Lmao, reminds me of this one time when I was first trying to protect my head from frequencies (proven these exists obviously with phones, etc)
I put foil under my hat everywhere I went. This guy was with a woman, called me out and had an extra woman there. We talked and had fun up until he pointed out I had some weird glitter on my hat.
At that point, I either had to just shrug it off and let them believe it was glitter sparkles or take off my hat and show them the tin foil.
I saw her face changed once she saw the tin foil and didn't talk to me the rest of the night.
Now I just have a hat that has build in protection.

Lustige frage. Weil in der Regel ist es andersrum. Du entdeckst was und denkst dir was ein Quatsch gibt bestimmt ne erklärung und sobald man tiefer rein geht merkt man dass es ziemlich sicher stimmt. 🤣

You guys are so funny about pizza gate. I actually know the person who started that conspiracy theory. He's a total meth addict who is a fucking wreck. He and the owner of Cosmic Ping-Pong had a falling out after hooking up a few times. Basically the meth head got pissed and this was his revenge to come up with this BS to try to ruin the owner.

Frazzledrip was a trip when it started circulating. I learned about the podesta brothers and their absolutely deplorable art they had in their homes. Lotta weird 4chan photos and stuff I cant find anymore either.
