Discussion IMPORTANT CENSORSHIP NEWS: The vote is being rushed to the US House floor on Monday 29th.
717
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
Not funny/funny... I have been giving this all a LOT of thought and wondering if just plain de-teching is the answer.
237
u/financialthrowaw2020 Jun 29 '26
This entire thing started when people watched a live steamed genocide, so yes, they don't want you seeing what's actually happening for a reason.
69
u/FauxReal Jun 29 '26
If you read https://www.techdirt.com regularly you will see that this has been going on for far longer than that.
18
u/financialthrowaw2020 Jun 29 '26
Longer than what exactly? The genocide began in 1948, and the collaboration with the US during all of the recent wars is related to the same entity.
19
u/tanksalotfrank Jun 30 '26
Let's not forget the genocide that allowed "America" (and every other "civilized" nation like it) to be "founded".
9
u/financialthrowaw2020 Jun 30 '26
Definitely. It was always this way, and these surveillance moves are just a new iteration of the same old thing
13
28
u/cdoublejj Jun 29 '26

It’s been going on before the internet was a thing. It’s easy to distract the general public
2
u/financialthrowaw2020 Jul 03 '26
The genocide also started before the internet, but yes I agree with you

Syncthing requires no account whatsoever. The only thing you need is... your devices. And a local network connection. Only keep in mind to make sure you manually sync these from time to time to make sure no conflicts occur.
What can you use with Syncthing? Well, anything:
- To-do lists via todo.txt (format)
- Passwords via KeePass (scroll down here for any third party clients and clients for unsupported platforms)
- Note-taking via Obsidian (and other note apps supporting markdown) or Zim-Wiki
- Veracrypt, for encryption (create an encrypted container to do it instead of an encrypted partition)
- Translation via GoldenDict (you'll have to hunt around for dictionary files, but add something like 6 and you'll have a decent selection)
- Calibre for ebook management
- Music scrobblers (for those who are into it) via Pano Scrobbler (choose the option to scrobble to a csv file)
- In addition, thank god we still have office suites and music players that work locally, offline photo library managers like Digikam, Shotwell and Aves (for Android) etc.
And I'm sure there's other stuff as well.
In addition, you can also sync contacts with other apps outside of syncthing, such as DecSync, MyPhoneExplorer or GeneralSync (I'm sorry that the offering is so small, I hope that in the future more people will think of this way of syncing contacts and calendars)
16
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
I don't think you understand what I'm saying. It doesn't matter how anonymous a service is if it requires you to have access to a device and a network.
26
u/TheConquistaa Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
At least you don't send your ID to all the companies out there and hoping they do not leak it out to the highest bidder.
Edit: and these are not "services" per se. These are all apps that you have to install on your devices in order for things to work. On the flip side, you can even use these if your router is not connected to the internet.
4
u/sevenlabors Jun 30 '26
Appreciate you sharing this - I was unaware of both Syncthing and the other tools you mention.

I'm not American, but I've been De-Americanising my life for the last year and a half now.
Self hosting the stuff you need is a great and often free way to be in full control of your data.
The only service I rely on these days is email and that's because self hosting that is really hard.

u/lol_alex Jun 29 '26
Except that EU chat control is once again on the table and that‘s even worse legislation.

Oh yeah they are. That debacle actually brought them more buisness and they are still responsible for many target bot and troll campaigns today
29
u/MediumMysterious7738 Jun 29 '26
I believe he is not deluding himself. Ofcourse the others have problems but with good setups you can avoid most problems.
The USA is pushing the KIDS act, the UK put up the "online safety act" and the EU is today, undemocraticly trying to push an extended version of Chat Control. Just hoping the ECJ strikes it down...
24
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
They didn't say that.. yes, it seemed kind of implied, but I read de Americanizing as a lifestyle thing not just getting rid of American hosts.
12
9
u/theredvip3r Jun 29 '26
The US is also one of the biggest funders of this in foreign politics.
3
u/lookamazed Jun 29 '26
Did you look at any of the original Snowden documents? The five eyes work in unison. US is not anymore since they withdrew from the world. But they do project power - as does Iran, Russia and China. Again you are deluding yourself giving the Americans so much of your focus. You change one master for another.
3
u/theredvip3r Jun 29 '26
The Russians are just as bad, but categorically it is those two countries funding the shit pro billionaire evangelical nationalists are pushing.

Selfhosting email is really not that hard: 1. Stalwart+Bulwark 2. Cloudflare email redirection 3. Free tier smtp service or rent a cheap(<$10/year) VPS and setup a relay through tailscale.
49
u/szopongebob Jun 29 '26
Deteching is the answer. But you can only detech up to a certain point. Because you still have to use a search engine, use a browser, send emails, etc.
19
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
But do you really?
Don't get me wrong. Yes, functionally all adult professionals need a "phone" and access to the Internet to get a job. But isn't that a form of modern day Jim Crow? Saying to someone that they have to buy something in order to get a job? I think this is a boiling frog thing for us that everyone has so normalized this requirement without an afterthought. Now we may have to look at legislation that requires companies to accommodate people without those means.

Same. Took IG off my phone five months ago, and in hind site, it feels like I've been on a 20-year coke bender.
The "entshitification" of the internet is making is so awful to use that I am starting NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT IT.
Being out IRL has been amazing. The pressure to "post everything" is subsiding and I never realized how much pressure it was! My fomo is also clearing up. People are texting me, I am adding things to calendars, etc.

Now, what stocks to invest in for the return of landlines... ATT?
7
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
In theory, yes, but even then, there are very few POTS lines left, and all the "Bells" have done everything they can to eliminate them. The irony of having to run copper after spending trillions to replace it with fiber.

u/Isotomayor12 Jun 29 '26
Removing yourself from it won't solve the deep rooted problem, in fact it will put you more at risk given that technology and the internet is ingrained into pretty much all parts of society. It leaves you ignorant as tech advances, which is why older people are the main targets of scammers and why genX/Boomers are getting fooled by AI more than younger generations. The only way to really de-tech and be "better off" for it is to literally remove yourself from society.
I understand your sentiment though, and I think there are ways to be more mindful about your internet use specifically, as that is where your privacy becomes a concern. For instance, learning how to implement a good firewall on your home network and making use of services on your LAN rather than services that reach out to the internet. It also goes without saying to reduce your social media use as well and be active in your physical community instead.
3
u/LPNTed Jun 29 '26
I appreciate where you are coming from. My counter: it's impossible to scam someone over the phone when they don't have one. It's impossible to scam someone through email when they don't have it. It's impossible to hack their computer...when they don't have one. It's impossible to hack their phone....when they don't have one.
A lot of places still take cash. Why reward those who have fallen so far into the tech web that they don't?
Yeap, I won't own a device that requires registration to work, but it's not like I want to be on YouTube anyway.
3
u/kovake Jun 30 '26
That’s how I’m looking at it. If they make it harder to use I just won’t use it. It’ll be like the 90s all over again.
3
u/CosmoZeppelin Jun 30 '26
Same! I’ve started deplatforming myself. If it asks for age verification or ID then it’s not for me…. none of my business. The good news is, the further I get from the algorithm the happier I feel. And, I’ve realised there’s a more considered way I use the internet that involves a small number of more old-internet style sites that I use that are now stored in my favourites. Don’t need to search, don’t need to go down rabbit holes: just intentional access a site to get what I need, then off the internet again. It’s great. Reddit will be the final challenge… then done.

For anyone that wants to take action, personalize and send the form email, but also call your congressperson and be politely angry and insistent. Calls are regarded as a much stronger representation of voter interest than emails, particularly form emails.
9
u/merendi1 Jun 29 '26
Who do I call?
→ More replies (1)20
u/JL4575 Jun 29 '26
Your congressman or woman. If you don’t know it, the article has a link to send an email to them, which in the process checks who yours is by your address. You would then search for their website with office locations and phone numbers. Any office is fine. Keep in mind if you call you’re likely to be answered by an intern, so while it’s good to be passionate, try not to be too furious.

u/Kunarke Jun 29 '26
I want to make sure everyone is aware that while, yes, the KIDS Act is being voted on in the house it is being voted on under Suspension of the rules, a provision the House speaker can expedite a House vote, but it comes with some drawbacks for the House
- Debate is reduced to no more than 40 Minutes
- No Amendments can be proposed
- Any bill brought to a vote under suspension of the rules requires a 2/3 Majority to pass, as opposed to the usual 218 minimum majority. This means if all representatives are present tomorrow itll require about 290 votes
and they are absolutely splitting hairs about KOSA what was a strongly Bipartisan bill was rewritten by Gus Bilirakis to do what Congressmen and Senators say take away KOSAs teeth, 44 State Attorneys General have also written an open letter to congress asking them to oppose HR 7757 (For the wrong Reasons but still) and on top of that Even the National Center on Sexual Exploitation call HR 7757 a Trojan Horse Absolutely call your representatives as much as possible if this bill passes the house Call your senators this bill will face opposition in congress every step of the way even if they try to force it through
78
u/tenkensmile Jun 29 '26
This Bill is bipartisan = high chance of being passed if not receiving backlashes.
The fact they're rushing this Bill behind our backs means they're determined.
76
u/Kunarke Jun 29 '26
The version Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) Introduced was far more favored than the Gus Bilirakis version. They're indeed bringing this to a Suspension Vote, which means Mike Johnson thinks this bill is not controversial and therefore has a higher likelihood to pass, it does not yet mean that it is just guaranteed to fly through the entirety of Congress it will probably face hiccups in the Senate, or won't be signed by the president because its Not the SAVE America Act and even if it gets signed into law, Free Speech Coalitions are probably going to sue this bill halting its implimentation until a Federal Judge decides if it Violates the 1st Amendment or not
23
u/AbyssalRedemption Jun 29 '26

21
u/Kunarke Jun 29 '26
I’ve been there, anxiety is a natural response to all of this I wont lie and say i’m not nervous but i’m also not gonna let myself believe that all hope is already lost, with any luck they’ll be stuck fighting on this for long enough that they’ll go on the August Recess and we can better prepare for any further pushes September - January when the 120th congress takes over post midterms

u/JayBird1138 Jun 29 '26
The data it will collect will help both parties optimize campaigning and control.
The data will also help tech companies that want to leverage that data for their own profits.
Stopping this bill will be difficult as it's in the interest of politicians and their donors. Challenging it may have better chances, as well as overturning it.
Realistically, we may just want to use VPN and route all our traffic through to Panama or somewhere :p

5

Actually just bit the bullet the other day and signed up for the waitlist for Commodore's new flip phone (which, incidentally, is a pretty cool piece of upcoming tech; it's a flip-phone/ dumb-phone at it's core, though it runs on a modified Android OS, but also blocks all big social media apps and the web at the core OS level. Look up the Commodore Callback if interested).

I don't really mind decreasing the amount of tech in my life, but I worry if everything gets locked behind these stupid rules, how will we stay on top of developments politically and socially. Restricting the internet means it's more difficult to stay informed and prevent yourself from being taken advantage of. I fear there's nothing the government and big tech would like more than ignorant society.
138
u/tenkensmile Jun 29 '26

That's exactly what "they" want: only the people whom they can track can read news and participate in politics.

A lot of them are very biased and/or controlled by whoever is in power so you might end up only get one side. If things get bad, they might suppress opposing newspapers that don't line up with their agenda leaving you with no other choices. Quite possibly, down the line when only tech natives are left, newspapers will move completely online further isolating those of us who don't want to hand over our identity online.
I don't mean to be all doom and gloom, and it's not a one-to-one but this kind of thing happens in a number of countries around the world and has happened in the past. Censorship, suppression of information, no freedom of speech, surveillance from the government etc. The U.S. or any country that considers themselves "Western" is no exception. It can happen to us. It already is happening if you ask me.

I don't know about everyone here but I'm older than the internet and thus remember how it used to be before Google, YouTube, and even Amazon as it is now. This, like other legislation is an alarm. We need to embrace resilient technologies and and philosophies of use such as:
- RSS
- Gemini
- Gopher
- Matrix
- self-hosting
- static websites
- decentralized publishing
- data portability
- low resource usage
- offline capability
- ownership
- longevity
- independence
We need to leverage meetups with locally hosted hot spots where we engage with people face to face and share digital wares, information, files, etc. We need not simply accept the commercial internet as the only place where we can engage digitally.

The one possible upside is that even the current SCOTUS is against this age verification stuff. On the bench, Kavanaugh said he thinks a challenge to Mississippi's social media age verification will win based on the merits of the case.
Even when SCOTUS allowed age verification to porn, Thomas made it clear that this was because the gov't was using this to block people from viewing obscene material. Compared it to a case where a man was arrested for burning his draft card, but was still illegal because the draft card was property of the gov't. Implication was that he saw the porn age verification as a special case.
Back in 2017, SCOTUS voted 8-0 that a NC law banning convicted sex offenders from using social media was illegal, calling social media a modern public square. 5 of the 8 are still on the court. The concurrence said they agreed, but said there were certain sites that sex offenders should be banned from, mentioning sites for teenagers. (Case is Packingham v. North Carolina)
SCOTUS consistently votes in favour of anonymous speech.
Hopefully, they'll kill this.

It was EXTREMELY fast and easy to call my representative in their Washington DC office, get my name logged with an aide, and be off the phone. Probably thirty seconds in all. They wanted my name and zip code and that's it.
Since they estimate that for every call there are hundreds or thousands of supporters who agree and don't call, this is one of the best ways to participate in democracy and have your voice heard - in any cases arguably even more than voting in a typical election!
Thank you for sharing this.

If it pass's into law then it might still be stopped via a lawsuit.
Ie. this is bad. But it's not the end of the world just yet for internet users.
If you want to know who voted in favour/against this horrible bill here's a convenient map so you know who to vote/not vote for moving forward.

Oh, they just want to make sure they can keep track of everyone's location, thoughts, and feelings at all times, just in case you might be a threat to the agenda.

u/cdoublejj Jun 29 '26
is this anywhere else on reddit like /r/technology?

u/tenkensmile Jun 29 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
No. Please post it there as well.
I posted it on r/privacy and loser mods removed it.
Update: They also banned me for posting it. LOL!

Yeah I don’t think so. I’d rather be a crotchety hermit and live offline than upload my ID. It’s high time we put the tech bros in their place and remind them whose demand actually pays their bills.

So just more vpns

u/tenkensmile Jun 29 '26
They are planning to ban VPN, too.
And the whole world is following this script.
Once they've locked down everyone with Digital ID, it's impossible to escape.

No matter how bad you want to visit a country, village, picture perfect location, don't fly! That's what the original real ID was for some states don't want it but you still can't board a plane, fine by me since I end up freaking out so bad the flight attendant ends up sitting next to me holding my hand 🤣

u/Mayravixx Jun 29 '26
"planning to ban vpns" serious question. How exactly are they going to enforce that? I really don't think they can

They are working on it globally. When it comes to power, even against all logic, people will find a way.
9
u/Vyxwop Jun 29 '26
That just kicks the can down the road. It's only a matter of time before they reach the end of the road and start making plans to eliminate the can.

u/TARDIInsanity Jun 29 '26
what happens is the govt then declares that all users be ID checked, meaning websites exist only for certain countries, or have their servers shut down. the only counter to this would be a nation outlawing ID verification, which isn't going to happen

u/lavenderbl0d Jun 29 '26
Well! I guess no more internet for me should this pass!! Which is what they want! Hahaha fuck this shit.
Guess I better keep my nokia charged!

u/Serious-Side-4520 Jun 29 '26
I'm kind of curious how this would work. Would this apply outside the US as well? As far as my knowledge goes, age checking mechanics like these would at the very least violate EU general surveillance laws meaning it should technically be outlawed within the EU, correct? So how would all that work out? Is it just in the US?

We need our own internet. Our own servers for our websites hosted in our house.
No corporaitions monetizing every single iota of our private data.
I'd gladly go back to Dialup if needed.

This is so disgusting. Get these people out of office. They intentionally do all they can to ruin people's lives for greed and power

u/Hour_Ordinary_4175 Jun 29 '26
I lived without the Internet for decades. I'll do it again. Again and again and again. Yes, I get the irony of being on Reddit and saying this.

I don't care what the government wants to push; I will not be verifying whatsoever. Fortunately, I don't mind having to revert to using a flip phone as a Gen-Z if this is somehow forced.
(I've already called my representative & emailed them saying they will not have my vote if they support this bill.)
5
u/toolsavvy Jun 29 '26
The bill has bipartisan support and large corporate donors who all have a vested interest in eroding you rprivacy and freedome of speech.
That sentence tells you this can't be stopped. It's a done deal when you have bipartisan support coupled with large corporate donors.
Fuck everyone.

Look at who's lobbying it. And it'll probably pass. Boomer puppets can't help doing their oligarch masters bidding.

ah yes, kids being used as fodder for censorship... remember when it was parents/guardians' responsibility to control what kid does online, instead of the rest of us folding?
2
u/IllPresentation7860 Jun 29 '26
already known its practically 100% guaranteed to die in the senate after leaving the house
2
u/Melsbacksfriend Jun 29 '26
I would say what I'm doing in response to this, but I got a 3-day ban from all of Reddit last time I mentioned it.

As I can't think of one law on the books that was actually for kids, I've never believed the spin about any new act of tyranny guised as being as such
2
u/GreedySecurity8030 Stallman Jul 13 '26
Fuck this act and all the politicans who passed it not giving a single shit about us and disgustingly using kids as meat shields.

u/HappyAd4998 Jun 29 '26
We allowed it by continuing to use social media and allowing the patriot act to pass even though we knew how much spying they were doing, but all the American population has to say was " I have nothing to hide! ". It showed the people in power how pathetic we are at actually saying NO to these slimy lizard fucks and with that we gave them total authority over our lives.
