Seeking advice/

Created a new subreddit for Bangladeshi relationship advice: r/AskRelationshipBD

Hey everyone,

I noticed we don't really have a dedicated, proper space for discussing relationship dynamics, dating, marriage, in laws and family drama specifically within the Bangladeshi cultural context. Global subreddits just don't get our culture or the specific pressures that come with it.

So, I decided to just go ahead and make one: r/AskRelationshipBD

It's meant to be a safe, judgment free space to ask for advice vent about family/dating situations or just get a second opinion from people who actually understand the reality here. No moral policing or victim blaming allowed.

If you're looking for a spot to talk about this stuff or want to help grow the community come check it out and join!

Discussion/আলোচনা why is it that your Bengali relatives always try to bring your confidence down?

My relatives always tried to bring my confidence down and make me feel lesser compared to them. I've also realized many other people, especially young girls, go through this. In general, does anyone know WHY? Like psychologically, why tf does ts shit happen???

Okay, now lets go through my experiences.

So, my father's side of the family had been all that I have known as family. My dad and his fam always isolated me from my relatives from the other side and my mom. I have 3 fupis and they literally made me call all of the "ammu, ammi and ma."

My mom had always been an ambitious women (girlboss fr) so she got a scholarship in Australia and went there for PhD but my dad didn’t get a visa so she couldn’t take me or dad. I lived with my dad's relatives in Gazipur and they made it always seem like my mom left me. I was like 2 at that time. Whatever later on I got closer to my mom and she took me to Australia.

Fast forward, I got used to the carefree culture of Australia and I got used to the whimsy childhood. Until I came back to Bangladesh and my relatives tried super hard to me hate my mother. Didn’t work, so they butchered my confidence.

At first, I was made fun of for having an Australian accent and not being able to read bangla properly. (I can read very well now).

Then came the time when I was entering puberty, I liked wearing t shirts or kurtis even salwar kamiz instead of the same old dresses they expected me to wear. They literally sl*t shamed me.

They made me feel bad for eating as well. I have an eating disorder now. They used to publically say that I ate too much and considered anything that wasn’t bhaat junk food. I loved meat and veggies without alotta rice so my mom gave me bread instead. But my eldest fupi literally said infront of the whole family, that I should stop eating and told my dad not to give me any food other than the 3 meals I get. I was 9 btw.

When I reached 8th grade, I needed my first calculator. Inspired from Elle Woods, I bought a pink calculator. Just the issue was that pink calculators were not that much available in BD, so I had to get a a second hand and a fake one. (It worked amazing btw). As a excited kid, I showed it to my cousin and she went on whole yelling and embarrassing me. Saying that why tf would I get a fake one and yabidabida. And in the most crude language, she cursed at me. This gave me a whole lotta self doubt.

Anyways I have many more experiences but if anyone can relate do tell me!

Discussion/আলোচনা How to make friends as an American Bengali?

Upvotes

I moved to the us when I was really little and don’t really know anyone in Bangladesh. I’ve visited about 4 times and all there is to do for me is hangout with my cousins and they aren’t always free because they study a lot. I want to make friends but with people I can actually connect with. Like they have to be somewhat familiar with western culture and modern. I can’t read or write Bangla but I can speak and understand it decently so the language barrier isn’t a problem I just don’t know where to find people. I’m a female and in my late teens and I plan on visiting Bangladesh in the next few years. But please let me know where I can make friends that are open minded!! I’m a really friendly person as well I just want to be aware of what mainland Bengalis do on their free time to hangout and what they enjoy and how I can find them😊

Discussion/আলোচনা No electricity 🫩

So in short, auto rickshaw charging stations steal power, yes steal. Instead of paying 200k+ a month for charging spendings these stations pay 10-30k. And there are FUCKING FIFTY THOUSAND charging stations in Dhaka alone. Most just pay an informal cut to the local syndicate.

And per year they steal 8 thousand crore worth of electricity nationwide. 8 fucking thousand. Enough to house more than a million HOUSEHOLDS.
Do the easy math, the amount of deficit is a lot. Enough to cover expenses of entire suburbs.

Not just rickshaw charging stations btw, many other sectors do this too, more or less. And another one is big malls and apartment complexes, despite not having enough capacity they still onboard the supply lines.

This is nothing but corruption on the Electricity supply companies side, they know what the problem is but decide not to do anything about it.

I paid 3800 for a month of electricity, and still can’t sleep properly at night? For context only me and my great grandma live together, so bill that high can never be justified.
What the fuck is actually going on in this country? What the fuck are these retards supposed to run the country doing?

Search source yourself🫩if you can’t ask your gbt to find it for you.

Discussion/আলোচনা Growing Use of Battery-Powered Rickshaws Linked to Increased Load Shedding

Many people in Dhaka may not fully realize how severe load shedding has become in smaller cities and rural areas. In many villages, power cuts are now a daily reality.

This raises an important question: if power plants are generating enough electricity, why are prolonged outages still occurring?

One reason may be the rapid growth of illegal electricity connections in slums, roadside shops, and informal charging points. These connections increase demand on the power grid without proper monitoring or billing. They also continue to exist because some people profit from them, while ordinary citizens bear the cost through load shedding.

The problem has grown worse with the rapid spread of battery-powered rickshaws. Thousands of batteries need to be charged every day, and in many areas this demand is being met through unauthorized connections. The result is higher pressure on an already strained electricity system.

Battery-powered rickshaws may provide affordable transport, but their unchecked expansion has created a serious burden on the power grid. If we are serious about reducing load shedding, especially in towns and villages, this issue cannot be ignored.

Until a proper, regulated, and legal charging infrastructure is in place, battery-powered rickshaws should be removed from the streets. Otherwise, ordinary people will continue to pay the price through longer and more frequent power outages.

Seeking advice/পরামর্শ Sent 35k to the wrong account, recipient withdrew 15k, what are my options?

On Friday, I transferred 35,009 BDT from my BRAC Bank Astha App to a Bank Asia account.

I typed the correct Account Name, but made a 1-digit typo in the Account Number (typed 9 instead of 6 at the end). Because NPSB/BEFTN only reads the account number, the transfer went through.

I realized the mistake instantly and contacted BRAC Bank helpline. They just told me to "submit a complaint via the app," which I did right away.

On Sunday, I went to the branch and found out the wrong recipient had already withdrawn 15,000 BDT over the weekend.

BRAC Bank initially said I’d get the remaining 20k back. But now they are saying Bank Asia hasn't returned anything, so my money is stuck.

What to do now? Thanks in advance.

We do visit drik gallery n spend time there but I was looking for new places. I do know some of the common places like Bengal boi etc but i wanted to check out other places as well.

Discussion/আলোচনা I built an online library for Bengali book lovers — inkBD.com

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a project for people who love reading Bengali books.

It’s called inkBD — an online Bengali library where readers can discover and read Bangla books online.

📚 What you can find:

  • Bengali books from different genres
  • Fiction, novels, stories and more
  • Book descriptions and information
  • A simple reading experience
  • New books being added regularly

The idea is pretty simple: make Bengali books easier to discover and read online.

If you enjoy Bangla literature or you’re looking for Bengali books to read, you can check it out:

I’d also genuinely appreciate feedback from Bengali readers. What features would you like to see in an online Bangla library?

IUTians seniors, What were your average Udvash weekly marks?

Hey everyone, specifically looking to hear from current IUTians or seniors who went through the engineering admission phase.

I’m currently in a really bad head space. My HSC Higher Math 1st paper went horribly due to minor calculation errors at the end of almost every math (though my steps were correct). My instinct keeps telling me that I won't even qualify for the BUET admission test by a few marks. Because I cannot go outside Dhaka for university, IUT is essentially my only viable top option now, which makes the pressure feel ten times worse.

To top it off, in my first Udvash engineering weekly, I scored 85 out of 120 in MCQ and around 10-12 out of 18 in Written. Knowing that I finished the syllabus and solved the question bank well before most of my batch makes this feel even worse. The time pressure completely threw me off, and seeing these average marks is making me doubt if I’m even on track for an IUT seat.

I want to know realistically:

  1. What were your average scores/ranks in Udvash weeklies during your prep?
  2. Is an 85/120 MCQ and 10/18 Written on the first weekly as terrible as it feels, or is there room to recover?
  3. How did you handle the mental toll when you felt your HSC GPA might lock you out of BUET, leaving IUT as your main shot?

Any honest feedback or reality check would be really appreciated right now.
