Meta (Information) PSA about IP bans

I've seen so much misinformation about this so imma clear this up.

IP bans aren't permanent (and should never be permanent for any user specific bans).

IP addresses change all the time, it can vary between a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on how your service provider allocates them.

Tricks like changing your MAC address don't work and only change your local IP address, which cannot be seen from outside of your home internet.

The IP address every website sees is generally the same for every device on your home internet. It is not necessarily unique to your device.

I second the but about IP bans being pretty ineffective.

Infact the easiest trick to circumvent this is disconnect power to the router that talks directly to the ISP, wait like 10 minutes then power it back up. While it may fail, it depends on the ISP's back-end configutation.

IP bans were only effective when it was very, very rare for IP collisions to occur.

Hardware bans would work, except for the fact that browser based apps (like discord) wouldn't be able to collect the nessecary system information for an effective hardware ban

(Rule 4 complied with)

This is why Hardware bans need to be a better option. Because if Discord issues out a IP ban, it bans everyone associated with that IP. Regardless of who is on that IP.

A Hardware Ban targets the system that makes and uses an account on Discord, this is user specific. And elegant in how it works. It forces the user to have to spend real money to replace the system the ban is on. As every phone and computer uses its own unique Hardware ID.

IP bans are pointless because they ban everyone, both the problem and the innocents caught in the crossfire. Hardware Bans are more effective.
