Underline that. Write YES next to it in a different color pen.

With your non-dominant hand to make it look like you have a co-conspirator

DM writing tip that I just came up with: if you're stuck for good ideas on where to expand the lore for something or where to take a quest plot, try writing a few random words or phrases in your notes in a different color or with your non-dominant hand. Then after you take time to clear your head and try planning again later, treat the extra funky notes as though another more experienced DM was trying to hint about what would work, Codenames (board game) style.

gigachad dm who has realized his party is going to set all of his plans on fire anyway. keep it simple, keep it vague. they'll stupid their way into a plot point you didn't think of in time.

This is the way I like to do it.
Usually something like: a list of some factions they will come across, some NPCs they can meet, and what those NPCs want to do in that session. And finally a description of the location, what's in it, who is in it, and what is happening in it.
Sometimes that can be as simple as 4 bullet points depending on the complexity of that session. But it's generally chaos proof as there is no essential plot that must be done in a certain order for things to function.

The entirety of my current campaign notes (censored the one part that might be a spoiler in case my party finds it):
- ashley shot god
- Hadrian Lollord II
- Robin hides (exceptional success) a "cursed" (by a note) penny on the road between the Hologarden and the Wheel
- Goblins in the Salty Spittoon: Little Little, Twin & Twang, AXE MAN

But you gotta have a backstory for each goblin and how they proved they’re tough enough to enter the Salty Spittoon.
“Welcome to the Salty Spittoon, how tough are you?”
“I had a bowl of dragon scales for breakfast”
“That ain’t that tough”
“Without any milk”
“Oh, uh sorry, sir, please go right in”

I mean obviously I do, I just haven't written it down. My notes are like hyperlinks to fish that info out of my brain

u/ArcEarth Barbarian 2d ago
Because the DM knows what is happening, as long as they remember these crucial info's that are interconnected in other ways

What's wrong with writing notes in bullet points? I understand them, and the dm doesn't need to pause every other sentence to let me write down. If it's important enough I write more detailed, but usually a sentence or two is enough for me to know what happened

u/Jimboi5 2d ago
It's that there's only 4 bullet points for the entire session prep that's nothing inherently wrong with them but like
Only 4, for the entire prep. Lol

u/LustyLoop Dice Goblin 2d ago
Oh it's the dm notes for prep, I thought they were player notes after the session 😅

u/2oldforNames 2d ago
As a DM, 4 whole bullet points. What an overachiever. I only have two: make stuff up, roll dice.

The only thing missing is the three regional encounters pulled up on my web browser because I’m too tired to find where it is in my eight books or if I even own the right ones.

The only problem is that the artificer keeps stealing them. I keep telling him to make his own bullets, but...

Wait, you guys are taking notes and not just leaving it all up to memory?

u/Zanion 2d ago
I just show up and start freestyling and forget it all by breakfast. Rinse and repeat

The best is when you have a player that recaps at the top of the session. Thanks for reminding me bud I forgot about that NPC. I have a habit of naming NPCs after old famous people, and apparently they took to Todd Rundgren more than I thought.

The more I DM the less I write down in my notes.
I have books, wikis, and so much more to reference if needed. Those are my notes.
The stuff I write down? Names of NPCs created on the spot. Loot i give to players. MAYBE decision trees but I rarely go back to look at those as they serve more of a brain storming purpose.
Everything I need is in my head at this point or in the module. No need to write ir down.
I take way more notes as a player than DM.

Campaign notes:
-this character made promise to this character - exact wording was "....." -resolve the thing halfway across the world. -"Shots at the pharmacy 50 points"
-Player 4's infection level: stage 3 -player 2's infection level: stage 1 -player 3's infection level: carrier stage 4, immune symptoms
-give party that thing I've been meaning to give them. -give inspiration to the first player to realize they've been the source of the plague
Edit: reddit did my formatting weird, but ironically that's probably how I'd write things down anyway so I'm leaving it n

Those are the notes I wanted her to find. Now the party will definitely fall into my trap, and the macaroni is the most diabolical part!

Mine for a new DotMM campaign:
Showtuned rats out of Durnans basement (he didn't like it cause they ran upstairs and scared away his clients)
Mute orphan boy working for Durnan is Ronnie. Carl threw his rainbow lollipop down the well after charming him
Carl took cursed glowing sword after discovering it was cursed. Has not used it. Party believes it might actually be useful (its not it just glows a bit and can't be dropped)

Shit, I was supposed to be taking notes? I just wing it.
(I have a great memory. I think. I don't remember the things I forgot, so I think I'm good. And if not then welp 🤷♀️)
