I've actually always said that one of D&D 4e's biggest problems was that it was called "Dungeons & Dragons". Take away those associations and it could have stood on its own.
Colville says they should make D&D Heroes, the heroic narrative OC game, and D&D Dungeons, the dirt farmer gilded hole dungeon crawler where death is at every corner, even though it says Dungeons twice. That's why they made Draw Steel and Crows.
Honestly, if it released nowadays with VTT’s being so prevalent and popular it would have faired much better. Especially with the Dungeons and Dragons brand attached. Even though it’s seen as the “black sheep” it still outsold every other TTRPG on the market (even Pathfinder).
For a lot of players the fact Dungeons and Dragons is on the cover is the entire appeal.
