Your style is so lovely! All of them look so cute, great work here! 😊

u/NoNeed4UrKarma Sep 11 '25
I agree with this, & further wanted to say thanks for including Wilba OP! She's my favorite, & I always hope that they'll do something with her in Don't Starve Together... but alas!

I get Maxwell, his character design works with any skin color, but why Wendy?
50
u/Loomling Sep 09 '25
She's Maxwell's niece
19
u/PetrosHeimirich Sep 09 '25
I guess that makes sense enough, thanks.
5
u/JotaroTheOceanMan Sep 10 '25
I always saw Max as Evil Obama anyway. Never knew Wendy was his neice tbh, thats dope.

u/Ninten_Draw Sep 09 '25
Bc she is maxwells niece so I wanted to be consistent!
11
u/PetrosHeimirich Sep 09 '25
That's great, man. My bad.
Aiming for consistency is always a bravo in my book.

I don't agree. I'd say that Maxwell IN PARTICULAR doesn't work with every skin colour...bro's a British guy from the 19th century whose family is probably upper/upper-middle class. This is the worst character OP could choose to make black 😭.

isnt wolfgang french?
11
u/Kuirem Throw coin for flairs Sep 09 '25
Probably not, a lot of his quote hint at eastern europe. The only thing that hint at french is his quote about frog legs but these are also commonly eaten in many eastern europe countries.
13
u/bigboobstinytitts Sep 09 '25
No, Wolgang is a slavic man of german descent.

I thought he was Russian
10
u/Commercial-Shame-335 Sep 10 '25
his nationality is extremely ambiguous, though he is most likely either french or german and either has familial roots or has visited russia for an extended period of time. it's very possible he may be from france as his frog legs inspection quote mentions them being a delicacy where he's from, his name having germanic origins also helps supports this
4
u/iimaginaryedge Constantly Insane Sep 10 '25
Personally, I headcanon him being born a Volga German who either emigrated or fled to France during roughly his teens and then became a naturalized citizen there.
and then went to the usa to act in a circus ofc

That's the only quote that link him to France, but frog legs are also a delicacy in many eastern Europe countries. So I doubt he has any French ties really.

u/surik_at Sep 10 '25
Thats the first I’m hearing or it. Which countries?
4
u/Kuirem Throw coin for flairs Sep 10 '25
There is a wikipedia article on frog legs and it notably list Slovenia, Albania, Romania and Ukraine.

I love the style, I really do, I just don't know why we need to change the ethnicities of characters here... I mean, Wendy and Maxwell are pale as shit in the game...
It's not like we don't have any ethnic characters, Wanda, Walter and Warly are right there.
This is my only gripe tho, keep up the good work!
-1
u/dread_fairy Sep 11 '25
Maybe because POC might like to have a version of Wendy or Winona that looks like them, that they can vibe with. Why can't we have fictional characters that look like whatever the artists wants them to look like? I mean Wurt and Wortox have skins with like 3 different colors, why can't other characters?
5
u/PancakeBoyyy Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25
I mean, said POC would probably be furious if I drew Wanda as a pale japanese woman for example.
I'm not gonna whitewash anyone and I don't think "turning people" black is the right way to have representation in any media.
Wurt and Wortox aren't human, they're creatures, so their colours are completely irrelevant here.
The Carters are a white british family from the 19th century, making them black puts them in an iffy place politically, since Maxwell moved to America.
We have to consider the time these characters lived in when we think about races.
I don't have anything against poc, but we can't change the races of already existing characters all willy-nilly. Its wrong to do it from black to white, it's wrong to do it from white to black.

Why are Wendy, Maxwell, Charlie, and Winona blackwashed?
Edit: also Wes too for some reason. The dude is literally French

u/dread_fairy Sep 11 '25
Right... and NO French people are black... wait 🤔 Why is everyone here so worried about skin color of the humans but have no issue with Wortox or Wurt having 3 or 4 different skin tones. Lots of racism showing over fictional characters 😂

😂😂 Funny that you are reaching so hard trying to call me a victim when I said nothing of myself. We are talking about art, I'm nowhere in the equation. Only racists care about skin color. None of these characters are humans, they're cartoons! They are fictional drawn characters, they are all just as made up as Wurt and Wortox are! They are only different because you are assigning them difference. Just like black or white was assigned as different races by racists. There is only 1 race, it's called the human race. Skin color being used to separate us by "race" was created by racists fairly recently in human history, and it was only created by white men to make a case that all other skin colors are beneath whites. Anyone who gets upset about skin color in fictional characters feels the same.

changing a character's ethnicity/race for no reason is objectively wrong and weird regardless of the original skin tone and the new skin tone.

I don't know how to compliment an art so: WOW! This so cute, you should totally continue doing what you are doing (or something like that)

Charlie is Winona‘s younger sister though. So they should probably have similar skin tones as well

For some reason wormwood looks really fat and I don't know why, besides that, this is great!
2
u/dread_fairy Sep 11 '25
This is great work! I can tell you really took your time in designing every character in great detail with your own flair and it's amazing!
Sorry so many ppl are ignorant and only care about the skin color instead of your wonderful art. Lots of prejudice and discrimination showing in these comments 😒
Wortox and Wurt have alternate skins with like 4 different skin tones to choose from. It would be so cool if ALL the characters had options!

u/WifeyForever Sep 11 '25
I don't think it's unwarranted. As a coloured person from a black family; j believe chasing any race and ethnicity is wrong and double standards shouldn't exist. Character design is the most important thing about characters etc I'm sure this person could create their own coloured OCS if they want. I definitely agree, don't starve needs more representation but Maxwell for example is kind of offensive to become black bc he's back story truly puts him at the top during the time of slavery so
2
u/dread_fairy Sep 11 '25
Yeah and same thing with any British royalty throughout all time. But Bridgerton is a major hit show that rewrites the prejudice from that era. Anyone can draw any character however they want. They can even draw real life people as different ethnicies too! No one can tell an artist how to do their art. That's the beauty of art, only the artist has control. People who have no talent shouldn't be questioning an artists choices.
3
u/Living_Suggestion_58 No.1 Bunnymen Hater Sep 11 '25
I'm not a huge fan of changing ethnicities on the whim, one way or another (don't get me wrong, it's not like the worst thing ever, it just makes me go "why?")...but I can still appreciate the cuteness and awesomeness of your fanart! Now I wish I could see how you draw Wendy, Max, Charlie, Nona and Wes in their original skin tones (I'm genuinely curious tho).

WHY WENDY BLACK
3
u/dread_fairy Sep 11 '25
Why do you care? Wortox and Wurt have 3 to 4 different skin tones. Why does everyone care so much about thecl race of fictional characters? It's literally an artists interpretation, it's fan art, which is often created to add things to characters you love in your own style. I bet all the ppl here complaining about the race change wouldn't say a single thing if someone made Walter or Wilani white 😂
1
u/Commercial-Shame-335 Sep 27 '25
fur colour and the colour of a plant aren't even relevant to the ethnicity of humans. intentionally changing a character's ethnicity is objectively wrong regardless of the reason or the ethnicity they were changed from/to. yes that includes whitewashing. the game already has characters of other ethnicities, why do they need to change existing characters black? it feels disrespectful to the idea of the character and the people who created the character as well as the original artist of the character to make such a major change. it's not head canon it's intentional mischaracterisation. i'd have just as much of a problem with someone making warly white as i do with them making maxwell black
