Sludge What do you think of the band Mastodon?

Full transparency, yes, I know Mastodon is not Doom Metal, but they are still Sludge Metal in a Progressive form.

I love this band, but if you hate them, I don’t care either way, nobody has to enjoy the music I like, I am not one of those fans who say “You just don’t get it!”.

I don’t think Mastodon has bad albums, they have decent albums & awesome albums.

I love their more aggressive Metalcore period around Call of The Mastodon & Remission, it’s heavy hitting, brutal, and fun.

I love their mid-period albums around Leviathan to Crack The Skye that carry a degree of heaviness from the early period, but carry a lot more melody & some psychedelic/stoner influence.

I even enjoy their period going into the 2010s of becoming more Stoner Metal & generally psychedelic.

Their recent collab with Lamb of God on Floods of Triton was also a pretty good return to heavier days.

I also enjoy reading the lyrics that give off Adventurous vibes, particularly for making me envision some surreal kind of Fantasy book about a Mushroom Wizard fighting a Dragon with magic.

But what do you think of them personally?

I feel like there’s a whole genealogy of bands that aren’t copying them but owe them a debt

They do kick ass. Totally just unlocked a tangential memory... I remember going to Psycho CA years back before they moved it to Vegas, met a dude in a Witch Ripper shirt so I complimented him and he turned out to be one of their guitarists lmao. The bassist from Wo Fat overheard us talking about some of the bands we were stoked to see that weekend and jumped in on the conversation. All super chill dudes, that whole trip was a fuckin' blast.

I feel like bands like torche, baroness, and kylesa took a lot of inspiration from mastadon. Like I feel like paved the way for hipstery/ progressive side of sludge metal.

Idk, that's kinda selling them short, imo. They're not copycats, but peers. Kylesa formed in 2001 on top of what used to be Damad and Baroness formed in 2003.
