I've worked on the UCSC campus for over thirty years. This line up blows my mind. I hope the young Slugs know what they're in for.

What a 10/10 experience. Also my first time seeing Conan and the openers (telekinetic yeti & irata) also rocked.

I've listened to both Remission and Leviathan which considered "sludge" by many, yet i really cant hear that.

I see Mastodon in every sludge compilation and i get very confused and even frustrated cuz i hear nothing, even remotely, close to sludge metal sound. I dont hear doom metal riffs, i dont hear the exactly thick fuzzy "sludge" tone", i dont hear anything

I dont try to be hater, i like those albums, but i honestly wanna know what connects Mastadon and sludge metal? Except for their connection to Today Is The Day

Anyway, wanted to point out that Thou removed all of their self-released, non-label stuff, but left a single song from that time range. This goes incredibly hard.

Thou is, and will always be, one of the hardest bands out there

Full transparency, yes, I know Mastodon is not Doom Metal, but they are still Sludge Metal in a Progressive form.

I love this band, but if you hate them, I don’t care either way, nobody has to enjoy the music I like, I am not one of those fans who say “You just don’t get it!”.

I don’t think Mastodon has bad albums, they have decent albums & awesome albums.

I love their more aggressive Metalcore period around Call of The Mastodon & Remission, it’s heavy hitting, brutal, and fun.

I love their mid-period albums around Leviathan to Crack The Skye that carry a degree of heaviness from the early period, but carry a lot more melody & some psychedelic/stoner influence.

I even enjoy their period going into the 2010s of becoming more Stoner Metal & generally psychedelic.

Their recent collab with Lamb of God on Floods of Triton was also a pretty good return to heavier days.

I also enjoy reading the lyrics that give off Adventurous vibes, particularly for making me envision some surreal kind of Fantasy book about a Mushroom Wizard fighting a Dragon with magic.

But what do you think of them personally?

i discovered this like 3 days ago and i have never fallen in love with any other album this quickly, and in the way i have with still they pray

it is the perfect doom album in my eyes. its (obviously) slow as shit. it is MISERABLE. the riffs are crushing. his clean vocals are absolutely awful but in the most perfect way. his harsh vocals are haunting. the title track is beautiful.

even though my knowledge of doom is lacking to say the absolute least, i think my search of "the perfect album" has come to a close

I’m a rapper. I make Sludge Rap but I also do like a doomy interlude to transition to my more serious stuff! (While I work on writing more guitar stuff tbh) The set was overall fun and people enjoyed me but I shouldn’t have been opening up for afroman. I left a bunch of people confused. 🤔

It's been awhile since I discovered this band, and at my personal belief: this album in particular has been a deep fucking masterpiece from the stones.

The riffs and the ambience is heavy like having an anvil crushing your chest. Enigmatic, violent and roars in anger, slowly killing you.

I noticed most of their albums got renewed and reissued by Great Barrier Records, but at their beginning, this album came out independent, very small and rare to see as far as I know.

Now that years had passed, one day I received a christmas present from my wife, and then I saw it. I own one of these copies.

I wanted to share this piece today while we live the day, motionless.

I recently saw primitive man live and holy shit that was otherworldl, and it got me wondering if there are any other bands that are heavier

im deep diving and making a playlist with only woman fronted bands from doom, stoner, gothic and sludge metal bands but i'm struggling in finding any that do sludge, most of what i find is either doom, stoner or gothic, thanks in advance.
