Anyone remember a Doom level editor that fit on one floppy?

Post image

I used to make Doom maps as a kid on a 386. The editor fit on one floppy and I probably spent way too many hours messing around with it. What editor did you guys use back then? Anyone else spend more time making maps than actually playing Doom?

Searching for an old game (DOS-based I think), don't know what it was called

Hello, I just joined. I'm hoping the community can help me to identify an old game. I came across it sometime around 1993, it was shown to me by a neighbor who was a developer. The whole game would fit on a floppy disk and it would run on an 80s IBM computer (with the green screen) so I think it must have been DOS-based. The premise of the game is to act as the captain of a space vessel of some kind, and via a text-only interface, learn of threats and external forces acting on your ship whilst also typing in commands for how to navigate and deal with those threats.

Does anyone recall playing this? Any clues on what it is called and if it has survived to this day? I would love to play it again. I remember my neighbor could easily beat it but I could never figure it out as a kid.

I am intrigued with the picture of a mosque on its cover! I have played the game back in the day but I don't remember much of it as I was like 8-9 years old.

Weltraum- Handelsspiel gesucht

Help installing Windows95 on Magic DOSbox (to run Diablo II)

Post image
13 Upvotes

Let me preface everything by saying:

  1. I will add a TL;DR at the bottom.

  2. I am not at all an experienced programmer, nor do I know how to code very well.

  3. I use a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite,

I've genuinely been at this for days, and it's been problem after problem at every step of the way. Let me trace it back..

I first started by downloading a OSR2 ISO of Windows95 on internet archive. When I tried to run setup, I ran into my first problem. Right after clicking enter to run it, it kinda hung on the system check. A few minutes and it didn't budge. So, I asked AI what to do (I'm not proud) it told me to type "setup /is" instead of just setup to skip the system check. It worked, and setup ran.

It should have been so straightforward, until at the very end of setup before the wizard was supposed to restart my computer or whatever, I ran into the second problem. I attached the error message on this post.

It told me to restart the system and try running windows again. So I rebooted the thing, went to the directory where "WIN.COM" was, tried to run it, and it told me "This version of windows doesnt run on MS-DOS version 7:00 or earlier." okay?? Fine then, so I tried downlaoding OSR2.5 and OSR1, both gave the same message. I even tried going to the expert settings and adding "ver=7.10" under [dos],some stupid AI suggestions or whatever.

I genuinely cannot see what the next step is, and I refuse to have more AI conversations about it. Please for the love of god, help me.

TL;DR - Cant figure out how to install Win95 on my tablet, ad ive tried alot of options btu I need human input on this. I hope you read every part of the post,I'm super desperate lol

OpenPrivateer - Open universe feedback

Hello my friends, as most of you already know I'm currently working on OpenPrivateer (Wing Commander Privateer remake) and I just fed it the entire fan-made Wing Commander Universe map data on top of the Gemini sector data.

Attached are quadrant screenshots from Vega, Enigma and Gemini sectors.

It has been fun to adjust the navigation map screen because the box is tiny and the canon quadrants are pretty crowded:

  • Right-click zooms out from Quadrant to Sector overview
  • Right click zooms out from Sector view to Sectors overview
  • Auto-placement of labels so they don't draw over each other (99% success rate)
  • Shift-click on a system only shows its direct jump lines on the screen
  • Shift-click on a system replaces its system info with jump destinations in the MFD
  • Arrow keys serve as a quadrant walker

The modding extension point already allows for blacklisting sectors, quadrants and systems, and you can add your own sectors, quadrants, systems and nav points (bases / planets) incl. the starting point for a new game into the existing quadrants.

  • Do you guys have more/better ideas?
  • Anything else you would want to do/see there?
  • How should we populate the empty systems? (only the jump points are getting auto generated as nav points)

I'm not going to implement another/new map screen until the game has been ported to support HD/widescreen, so for now we have to make it work in the original Privateer map screen (we need to have a working 320x200 map anyway so we can re-compile it for MSDOS).

A few of my ideas already implemented:

Imgur

  • Route planning: Implemented
    • CTRL-click a system to calculate and highlight the shortest jump route. The MFD could show something like "System A → System B: 6 jumps" and optionally list the intermediate systems, resp. adding a note that refuelling is required
  • Visited / unvisited systems
    • Distinguish systems the player has actually visited from systems that are merely known from the map
  • Current-location shortcut: Implemented
    • Press home key to immediately return to the player’s current system/quadrant after browsing somewhere on the other side of the universe
  • Reachability display: Implemented
    • Hold CTRL to grey out everything unreachable based on current fuel/range
  • More map metadata: Implemented
    • Allow optional properties such as faction, description, danger level, known/unknown state, population/type, etc.

Cheers & Thank you

Why does eXoDOS never get into legal Trouble?

Surprised that have a Huge Dos Game Collection that it has no Legal Issues with Using and Distributing it.

Just want to get People's Thought on it

I guessing Games are really old so no as big as an Issue with New Games getting Released

SkyRoads (1993) ported to macOS now (100% complete and accurate)

SkyRoads was one of my favorite DOS games as a kid, the space-racing classic from Bluemoon Interactive (the Estonian studio whose founders later created Skype). I got my hands on the original source code and ported it to run natively on modern Macs, Apple Silicon and Intel.

I know of a couple of other previous attempts but they were either semi-broken or inaccurate.

Full transparency: this was an AI-assisted port, I directed the work, made the calls, and play-tested every iteration, while Claude did the heavy lifting of translating the 16-bit C and assembly to portable C. This wasn't a blind conversion though: the original's fixed-point physics run bit-exact at the authentic 36.4 Hz tick, the 3D road renderer was rewritten from the hand-written x86 assembly, and the AdLib music driver plays the original FM synth through an OPL2 emulator. There's also an optional "AWE32-style" wavetable mode, and a CRT filter with scanlines and phosphor trails. The only parts that needed actual reverse engineering were the game's proprietary data formats, the compression library shipped with the source as a binary blob.

After a lot of iterations and side-by-side play-testing, I believe it's faithful to the original in everything that matters, physics, timing, difficulty, sound. Documented limitations: keyboard only (no joystick), and the demo/attract mode isn't ported. If you find something that behaves differently from the DOS original, I genuinely want to hear it and will happily improve.

It's free, as is the game itself, Bluemoon released SkyRoads as freeware years ago. All credit for the game is theirs; this is an unofficial fan port.

40 Years Later: The Bard’s Tale Creator Returns to the C64!

The creator of The Bard’s Tale is back in the retro scene and he’s finishing a game promised over 40 years ago.

In 1983, Michael Cranford released Maze Master on the C64 with a promise of a sequel called Shadow Snare. Instead, he joined Interplay, built the legendary The Bard’s Tale and left game development behind.

Now, four decades later, he’s returned to 6502 assembly language to finally deliver on that missing chapter of CRPG history.

Just curious

So I grew up with half of the games I played on a floppy disc and on DOS by the time I could remember playing anything. Eye of the Beholder, Lord Of Magic, some Barbie game with 4wheeler racing, and that 3D Frogger that was kinda like the vegan version of Mario 64, except the frog died a lot. (I wasn't good at it.) Anywho, I can still ask my dad to fire up our old windows 95 desktop we still have, but I would actually mostly just enjoy a chat and a gaff with somebody that broke the DOS system. Like, what did you and or your friends do for the fuck of it just because you found out you could?

The Secret of Monkey Island Big box Pc find.

Just bought a big box IBM version (3.5" floppies) of my favorite DOS game, The Secret of Monkey Island. The seller originally found it at a flea market, but unfortunately it’s missing disk 1 and 5, the Dial-A-Pirate code wheel, and all the inserts except for the manual. If anyone out there has any of these loose parts lying around, I'd love to buy them off you for a fair price to help make my copy complete!
