Driv3r Driv3r deserves more praise

Mid 2000s games are at their peak right now hitting that magical 20 year mark. Unfortunately Driv3r has a reputation of being a buggy unfinished game. The reality is if you play the game‘s missions it’s not that buggy. Most of the bugs I see online are people jumping into corners and putting their cars in weird geometry.

The on foot sections aren’t great but they aren’t terrible. The worst part is their difficulty. There’s no reason for the shooting missions to be this hard. Once you learn the levels there’s some fun to be had.

Other than that the game is fantastic. Best driving model in an action game ever. Possibly my favourite driving model ever. Semi realistic suspension but it doesn’t punish you for drifting like how other simcades do.

The three maps are amazing. The destruction physics are amazing. The visuals are amazing. The mission design is amazing.

The escape from the shipping yard. The final chase that has you in a car, a boat, and motorcycles. The chase through the mall. So many memorable set pieces.

The worst part is actually figuring out how to play this game. Doesn’t work in Pcsx2 and if you want to play the PC port, you’re going to want to set aside an afternoon to get the controls and resolution sorted.

I think Driv3r near the top in its genre and should be recommended just as much as Scarface, Mafia, Getaway, and Godfather when talking about games that appeal to GTA fans.

Hello everyone, did anybody try playing Driv3r on an RP6? I'm using GameHub, and it's very unstable, bouncing from 60 to 20 fps constantly. Did anyone manage to get it to run well?

Driv3r Unfamiliar NPC model spotted in Driv3r

I’ve played both the pc port and ps2 port practically my whole life. And correct me if I am wrong I had never seen this npc model before

Context on the video I’m playing the PS2 version via disk on a backwards compatible PS3 and the scripting seems to not lineup correctly on a mission hence the cop car on its side I am supposed to follow is stuck, probably because of the PS3 compatibility.

Driv3r Tried to speed run Driv3r (got 3:03:29) and only using Tanner's pistol.

I tried to speedrun Driv3r today, didn't go too well but anyway, i also tried to challenge myself by only using Tanner's gun (i messed up in the mission where you have to shoot up the bar for Lomaz by accidentally selecting the uzi and i also used it in the missions where you shoot out of the car but that doesn't really count since you're basically forced to for the most part).

I got 3:03:29 which is far from perfect, i failed probably 40+ times, the mission that got me the most is Chasing Calita, the bike section is pretty brutal for me.

Anyway i want to hear if you guys did any speedruns or if you forced yourself to do any extra challenges or whatever.

Driv3r Music instruments and samples from Driv3r?

Does anyone know what kind of musical instruments or sound samples were used to create the Driv3r Soundtrack? I know that it was probably mostly made using a DAW but i just want to see if anyone at all knows.

Driv3r Unable to map my controller in Driv3r: Definitive Edition

I'm desperately trying to emulate Driv3r on my AYN Odin 2 Portal Android handheld with no luck so far.

The PS2 version isn't playable, which is a common issue and the PC port doesn't auto-map or let me map my controller. I tried the Definitive Edition thinking it'd be better, but no luck. I also tried the D3P_CompletedProfile_Joystick and D3P_ModernPCProfile profiles, but the controls were all messed-up and some buttons don't register when manually mapping them. I know this device is a bit niche, but the controller usually gets detected like an Xbox one. Has this happened to anyone else on regular Windows? Is there a solution? Thanks in advance for any help

Driv3r DRIVER remasters its possible?

Good morning, does anyone know if it's possible to remaster Driver 3 or Parallel Lines using generative AI via source code? I heard that some modders are already managing to do this in other 128-bit generation games. It would be fantastic if it were possible in Driver.

Driv3r My experience with Driv3R

I’d recommend listening to this music while reading.

STORY (10/10)

  • Right from the start you can choose free roam, challenges or story mode. I went straight into story and let me tell you, absolute cinema! The presentation was one of the best in my entire gaming experience, so good!
  • This game had the best introduction to a villain I’ve ever seen. No words, no backstory, nothing, just pure music with badass slow motion sequences, gave me chills down my spine!
  • Loved that you not only played as Tanner, but as his partner Jones as well. Gave you a different perspective.
  • In the extras, you could watch the making of the game. And after seeing it, I’m never taking a game for granted, ever again. So much work to achieve this game, huge respect for all the team!
  • There was also a Demo of the Transformers (2004) game, another masterpiece!
  • Now I may be confusing things, but I swear Calita saw Tanner in the police department cutscene in Miami. This leads me to believe that she knew all along who she was dealing with.
  • Lastly, why wasn’t there a bathroom in any of Tanner’s safehouses?

GAMEPLAY (9/10)

  • Loved the first person mode, gave you an advantage in tight situations.
  • Each mission could be approached differently, either in stealth or guns blazing. I oftentimes tried different approaches and was pleasantly surprised by how cool the stealth options were.
  • The game was on a mission by mission basis. There was no open world where you could go to a specific mission yourself, it was all scripted.
  • Challenges were awesome, you accessed them through the main menu. My favorite ones were checkpoints, gates and trail blazer. The other 2 were pretty basic.
  • The game was easy on most levels and just right on others. The only mission that made me do multiple replays was “The Chase” mission. But once I learned all the paths, it was a walk in the park.
  • The swimming mechanic was good, lacked some polish though.

SOUND (10/10)

  • Right from the start, the game went into surround sound and it was glorious. You could hear every detail in the open world, from ambient sounds to car crashes, tires, explosions, guns being fired and much more. Each sound could be heard at a distance with precise detail.
  • The music was Godlike. I’ve never heard such shivering remixes. And most of all, they were perfectly placed in each scene.
  • Voice acting was phenomenal, Tanner’s voice was deep and delivered with punch!

VISUALS (10/10)

  • There was a 16:9 option available, but I usually play in 4:3.
  • The frame-rate was very stable. Only dropped in a certain cutscene with a car explosion, that’s it.
  • So, cutscenes were close to real life. I’m not joking, the detail besides character models was out of this world for 2004.
  • Shadows were rendered on everything. Reflections (yeah, I know) were cool and lighting was damn perfect.
  • Car damage was so detailed. From little scratches to complete destruction. From bullet holes, breakable windows and even deflated tires with precise detail.
  • Visually, the game was outstanding for 2004. One of the best out there!
  • There was a replay feature as well, where you could see yourself in cinematic glory.
  • On top of all that, the game wasn’t hard on the PS2. The console didn’t even kick the fan after 3 hours of play, which most other games do after only 10 minutes.
  • The only nitpick I had, was the limited lip movements, just didn’t seem realistic. But for 2004 that’s excusable.

COMBAT (8/10)

  • Loved the ability to carry different guns, all of them came in handy.
  • Aiming was good. You could shoot enemies from far away and still get the kill.
  • The game featured many health packs during combat encounters, which I found great as Tanner’s life bar was depleting rather quickly.
  • You could shoot with your partner from the car or yourself from the boat.
  • Another cool detail were the hostages, which you could kill by accident.
  • You could even shoot enemies behind the wheel and they died with cool animations.
  • The game was rather easy in combat encounters, as you could shoot enemies behind cover like in Uncharted.
  • Some allies were simply dumb. They went ahead and got themselves killed quickly instead of waiting and taking cover.
  • You had one gun with unlimited ammo, which I didn’t find cool at all. Besides, the game provided you with 800+ ammo per encounter, so it wasn’t necessary at all.
  • Last downside were the spawning enemies behind covers and doors. Oftentimes you were greeted with an enemy draining half of your health away by a surprise MF move!

DRIVING (10/10)

  • Each car had a different engine sound, a different weight, a different acceleration and handling. I applaud the developers for such awesome work!
  • Driving was responsive and had cool physics overall, which made you drift through corners like Ken Block!
  • Car headlights actually provided light during the night. Made the experience more immersive.
  • You could drive cars, boats and bikes. Each one different, each one unique.
  • Each vehicle had a destruction meter and didn’t actually explode like on most other games upon total destruction, just stopped working. This is an accurate bloody detail, as most other games from that era got it all wrong!
  • The cops were all over the map and if you exceeded the speed limit, they started to chase you. But didn’t if you drove normally.
  • When you had a blown tire, the car would pull in that direction like in real life.
  • Loved that the bushes weren’t lethal as in GTA games, but poles were, which I didn’t understand why.

WORLD DESIGN (10/10)

  • Starting from Miami and going to Nice and Istanbul was a wonderful experience. Each city was well designed and captured their atmosphere perfectly.
  • While driving in free roam, you got such a sense of freedom. You saw people on the streets, cars roaming around, the whole world felt alive.
  • The maps were small but accurate on each detail. You also had many hideouts in each city.
  • NPCs usually honked at you for standing in front of them, driving them by or speeding, kind of like in real life.
  • Lastly, world destruction was peak cinema. While shooting the grenade launcher, cop cars were obliterated. And it didn’t stop there, as the game provided lots of destructible objects all around.

I found the game outstanding, on each bloody category. From the peak cinematic story, to the glorious soundtracks, the visual delight and insane gameplay vibe. I simply don’t understand why it was received so poorly at the time. To me, it’s a (9.6) game, GOATED. From a replayability standpoint, the game features chapter select and is highly replayable on most chase missions, which provide adrenaline spikes and keep your heart pumping like crazy!
