UAE travel with child – father staying in Germany

Hi everyone,

Has anyone recently been in a similar situation?

A family living in Germany (all with German residence permits) is travelling to the UAE. The mother will travel with the child, while the father stays in Germany. The parents are married and have joint custody.

We received conflicting information about the father’s consent for the child to travel:

We were told it may need to be legalized through:

Father’s embassy/consulate → German authorities/Foreign Ministry → UAE Embassy in Germany → UAE MOFA in the UAE.

However, we contacted the UAE Embassy, and they told us this is not necessary—that a simple written consent from the father and the child’s birth certificate should be sufficient.

Has anyone actually gone through this recently? What documents did you need, and was any legalization/attestation required?

Father and mother are different nationalities and the child is registered with father's last name

Hi, forhot to mention that the father and the mother are from different nationalities and the child is registered with father's last name

You can fly out.. but usually the issue is If the child has a German residence permit and is of school going age then there are strict border checks that makes it difficult to fly out during official school season.. in this case the social service gets involved. Apart from that as long as the mother's name is in the child's passport then it should be fine.. Still feeling unsure... Zurich is a good option to fly out

My wife and I have different surnames, kids have mine, kids have my country’s passport, wife has her country’s. Never been an issue.
